Good morning Heart Valve Warriors!!
So I am having a major bout of insomnia. Day 7 to 8 post op! I bet there is an article or posts about this. Around 10:30pm a cloud just lifted - everything feels lighter - deep deep tissue does not feel as uncomfortable. I can move myself around in bed … sure there is a little pain, but nothing I can’t handle! Anyway, thought I’d use this time to connect with some of my heart friends, until I get sleepy again☺️
I have noticed so so many things through this experience! So many lessons. Here I go with lesson number 1:
Do not worry, instead prepare. I think back to the many anxious moments during this experience. All we need to do is prepare. Will we be able to prepare for every twist and turn, or set back? No - just prepare for what you can! Then sit back, relax and watch it unfold! it is quite an experience. One that 7 days out of surgery, am very thankful for! It’s life changing people- get ready!
Okay I that was quick , but now I am sleepy again. Back to sleep I go!
Happy Thanksgiving to my heart friends!! Sending you all love and prayers.

Adam Pick Hi Julie, Happy Thanksgiving! Fyi, I've struggled with insomnia off and on for the past 17 years since my surgery. I find that exercising during the day really helps tired my brain and my body for a good night sleep. That said, I'm going for a bike ride right now!
Valerie Allen Hi Julie, are you home or maybe at the hotel? I lost track of time! Happy Thanksgiving!
Ana Brusso Happy Thanksgiving and thank you for your update.

Jennifer Fuller There’s nothing more satisfying and healing than a good nights sleep. I’m 3+ weeks post op and I feel like my recovery has really started to accelerate now that I’m sleeping better. I was finally able to get comfortable and shift a bit in bed without a lot of pain.
Hello! Tysen here. Julie’s phone was with her in ICU so I couldn’t update.
I’m finally allowed to be with her!
She’s doing well. She spent 2 nights in ICU. The first night she had some pain b/c they had to stop the pain pump…the pain meds were reducing her breathing and she was building up Co2. She slept better the second night and she moved to the step down unit last night.
Chest tubes are out. They just removed the temporary wires to her heart. All the strings, hoses and cables are out! She’ll take a shower later today.
Now it’s about getting the steps in. She did some laps of ICU and now in step down.
tip for other patients: apparently ICU is very loud and a little unsettling. Bring noise cancelling earbuds.

DeWayne Adamson @juilemccarthy is indeed a warrior. Drive safe! I'm about 3 days behind her, 4 in the ICU due to kidney, lung, and Afib issues. Old age? A couple more days here in the hospital and then some more time in the hotel until strong enough to travel. No advice..just know it's no cake walk. Oh, get some noise canceling ear buds. ICU is a zoo. @dewayne Adamson

Deena Z Hi Tysen, hang-in-there. I know it's a bit of a wait after getting up so early. Julie will soon be in recovery. First and second day can be a bit rough for Julie, due to total physical exhaustion and the effects of being on anesthesia for hours, so just keep that-in-mind for yourself and for Julie for when she wakes up. I wish I had been told such, so that is why I am telling you.

Sean Adkins We had a lot of room service at the Intercontinental. Both restaurants at the hotel are very good. I’d recommend getting familiar with the location of the hospital cafeteria, Subway, Panera Bread and both Starbucks as well while things aren’t as hectic. The cafeteria is kind of hidden around the corner past the Panera Bread and Starbucks. Little Italy is near the hospital and is supposed to have some good restaurants but we never got the opportunity to try them.
Pamela Gregory L'Albatros is a very nice French restaurant very close.

Okay I am 3.5 weeks away from surgery. Feeling confident in my decisions with the surgeon and tissue valve replacement. Just curious about how it will feel after surgery? How long will I have tube down my throat? Will it be removed prior to me waking up from surgery?

Rose Madura Hi Julie, we had a big discussion a couple weeks ago on this site about the breathing tube. Look up Kyle Griffin. To answer your specific questions, when I woke up, I was extremely groggy, VERY dry mouth, and relieved that it was over. I did have the breathing tube in for a while until they were convinced I could breathe on my own. I didn't wake up for over 14 hours after the surgery was done. But, everyone is different so it's a difficult question. I do think they try to take it out before you wake up. I'd think that is the go to protocol. Hope this helps.

Grace Mason Hi Julie, I had surgery ~ 6 weeks ago and I very vaguely remember the nurse telling me they were removing it, and I vaguely remember a sensation in the back of my throat, but that day 1, is very blurred by sedation, so you probably won't remember it as a bad experience but just a memory. Everyone is different of course, but I have no recollection of having it in or feeling a need to get it out. Wishing you all the best ❤️

Pamela Gregory I had surgery at The Cleveland Clinic too a year ago and did have the breathing tube for about 20-30 mins? I was in and out of consciousness but I remember the nurse saying some level (probably oxygen) had to be at a certain level before she could take it out. I was definitely relieved to get it out but honestly you are extremely out of it when you first wake up. I know a lot of people on this site do not remember having it in at all so I think it depends how you are doing.

Rich Butela I still had mine in when I woke up. It was probably gone within the first hour, but it's hard to say for sure. That first day is very surreal when you wake up. I do know that the tube was irritating but not painful and I don't specifically recall them pulling it. I'm still amazed at how little pain there was throughout the whole process.
Julie McCarthy Good to hear Rich! Thank you for your insight.
