I met with my local cardiologist for my one year testing results. The results were great, he said. I was concerned about PVCs but he is not so I am not any longer! My BP is stable now, finally on the right meds I hope. I will have a video conference with Dr Roselli to get an aortic specialist review. But I am very relieved. And I don’t have to go back for a year, a weird concept when a couple years of life have revolved around the issue!

Thanksgiving (7 month) update. Going well and surgery is less on my mind these days. My holter monitor last month indicated I have PVCs but the cardiologist went ahead and took me off Eliquis, my last med from surgery. I’m so glad as my forearms were always so bruised. After Cardio Rehab I got a personal trainer once per week and I try to go on my own twice per week, though sometimes it’s one other time. My scar is starting to fade, just small portions of it. Still quite noticeable. After the Thanksgiving meal I laid down two times and immediately fell asleep for 15 min or so. Not my usual. So I still get fatigued when I’m extra busy. All in all, doing well! Love to all, no matter what phase you are in. ❤️

Had my second gel shot last week and will get the final 3rd of 3 next week. So far not seeing much help this time, but they tell me it can take 2-4 weeks after final injection. So keeping my fingers crossed. It’s hard enough walking up my stairs now, thinking about post surgery.

Valerie Allen Carmen - I’ve tried writing in your guestbook a few times but for some reason it won’t post! Are you traveling with someone? Wanted to be sure to have a place to recover comfortably when discharged and before flying home, so I reserved 2 weeks at the hotel connected to the hospital, the Intercontinental. That’s longer than most but I’m retired and didn’t want to stress. My husband stayed there while I was in the hospital, then I moved over on Day 9. I believe you can cancel until a day before, so if I felt like leaving earlier we could just cancel. But didn’t. There are others hotels close by. If you are flying be sure to secure a wheelchair for the flight home. Made it sooooo much easier. Please ask if you have more questions. You will do well and they take excellent care of you!
Valerie Allen Oh, they have a patient rate so that helps a bit.

Anna Ma I did the same as your plan Valerie, except I didn't need to change flight. I had my heart pillow with me all the time. How do you feel now? I surprisingly started to feel good on day 13 and we flew home the next day and I was fine. My husband got the first class tickets for the first row, so I constantly got up and walked around with ease. Wheelchair service was good so that I didn't have to walk the big airport. Atlanta airport is big.
Anna Ma Here’s me with my pillow on plane. Have a mask is good idea too.

Grace Mason I looked like Anna, with a mask and my pillow. I was definitely glad I brought it on the plane just as a "sign" to other people because you can't tell by looking at most people they just had heart surgery, plus it was good for the bumps on landing and any turbulence. I had a security person coming at me after walking through the detector (they don't push the wheel chair thru that) she had her hands raised like she was going to pat down my chest and shoulders and I held my pillow out like don't even think about touching my chest 😄. I also wore some compression socks on the flight and stayed hydrated

Kathleen Sciacca Wheelchair service to my “going home” plane in Cleveland was exceptional. They took me down the ramp to board into the front seats on day 11 after my OHS mitral valve replacement. Wore my compression socks, had a bottle of water and hugged my heart pillow. Flight staff was wonderful and exiting the plane was same. Blessings to you!

Day 12 post op. Still in the hotel at Cleveland Clinic. This is such a good set up as it is attached to the hospital. I had follow up appts yesterday, 2 days after discharge, and just used the skywalk to get there. Of course I was in a wheelchair due to all the walking. I was cleared to fly home at the end of the week! Still on lots of meds and am tired most of the time, taking hallway walks a few times a day and trying to build up gradually. All things considered 👍.
Darrell Malone Thx for update. You will love to get home it just feels so much better.

I am progressing well. Today is post-op day 8 and I am still in a regular room. My O2 level would go down when they took the supplemental oxygen off. Today is the first day they’ve been able to leave it off all day. Also sturdier walking today. Hoping tmrw is the discharge. We stay in Cleveland 5 more days in a hotel. The most important thing I want to tell those waiting is I literally and significantly felt better each day: so don’t get discouraged. There are small setbacks of course, but all in all I am in awe of the body’s ability to recover.

5th day post surgery! Got to step down not quite 2 days ago. They are working me so hard I have been very tired. Both ICU and step down have their pros and cons and are generally what is needed when needed. Cleveland Clinic and Dr Roselli are wonderful for aortic surgeries. I have only had one bad nurse: I asked to change my nurse and they did without hesitation. Guessing discharge may be Thursday. Everything seems to be on schedule! More post surgery later!

Yumiko Ishida I tried sleeping in a bed at about the 6 week point but was not comfortable. Flat on my back, I felt my heart pounding, and tilted up on a wedge, my lower back hurt. I probably would’ve been ok on my side, but I was afraid. Also my bedroom is on the third floor and I have joint issues, so it wasn’t worth the effort for me until about the 8 week point. Now I’ve been sleeping mostly in my bed, on my side or on my back, but if I’m too tired just stay downstairs and sleep on the recliner. I’m about 10.5 weeks out and it’s more about joint pain and less about heart exertion.
