Has anyone struggled with severe muscle pain several weeks post op from sternotomy?
I had no such pain until after week four and it got worse each week. My chest, traps, scapula. My Primary doc prescribed methylprednisolone dosepack which knocked it out on day two but my BP spiked so he said to stop it. Pain came raging back. Surgeon's RN advised to take one steroid pill a day to finish it plus a new Rx for Colchisine. Felt fine until the steroid ran out two days ago and pain is back. I am now ten weeks post op and very discouraged that this is still an issue. Otherwise, everything is pretty much normal, walking a lot when pain isn't severe and resting HR is in the 70's.
Anyone else experience this?

Suelynn Hanegraaf Hi Christine, I am 5 weeks post-op from my aortic valve redo surgery and like you, experiencing pain - specifically, left shoulder blade and neck pain. My home health PT says it is muscular and from my body’s natural inclination to protect my healing sternum. Like you, I am on Eliquis and cannot take any NSAIDs. My cardiovascular surgeon agreed with me to try acupuncture and lidocaine products (which I found didn’t do much). A heating pad has helped as well as gentle PT movements. I am hopeful that acupuncture will as well.

Yumiko Ishida When choice was limited, I did Tylenol and topical CBD. Better than nothing, but neither made much dent. Oral steroid, lidocaine patches, and muscle relaxants were not for me, based on past experience. At 8 weeks, surgeon cleared me for chiropractic adjustments and PT. I could have started acupuncture but didn’t think I could get on and off the table. Maybe they could do it on a chair, but I did not inquire, so you may want to look into it. It did help me in the past, but my acupuncture doc’s office is further away so it was inconvenient when I had the driving restrictions. As Suelynn points out, gentle movements helped me, too. I think it’s important to make sure your circulation is good. Depending on the body part, I will alternate between hot and cold pads.
I was on warfarin before my surgery for over a year, and the coumadin clinic nurse told me it’s ok to alternate between Tylenol and an NSAID like Advil when the pain was really bad. They just had to monitor my INR more closely. So if you are desperate, ask your doctor. At the three month mark post surgery I was finally able to stop warfarin, switch from Tylenol to NSAID, and it is like night and day…

christine blackway Great info Yumiko! I have been doing the ice and heat, topical, etc. Temporary relief though. I'm going to be more diligent with the muscle relaxers as I've read they should be taken regularly for maximum effect. My docs disagree on the ibuprofen, one says ok once in a while and the other says definite no-no while on Eliquis. Unfortunately, I will be on the blood thinner until September due to a PE after surgery.
I have been doing stretches and range of motion in Cardiac rehab so hoping that helps move healing along. Glad to hear you are getting some relief!

Anna Ma I'm 8 weeks post op. I still have pain around my left shoulder blade area. a couple of weeks ago I found a home recovery guide from UK NHS, it described a few mobility movement. I tried them and it helped a lot! I'm completely off pain med now. Whenever I feel pain, I'll do a few of those stretch moves. you can search up youtube for post surgery movement too. I found I can't sit and eep one pose too long. I can't do too much exercise yet, but I think as I get better and can do more stretches and physical therapy exercises, it will get better. I can't wait!

Back in the hospital for the past two days after my MV repair on 3/5. On Monday night my resting HR shot up to 130's and stayed there. Went to the ER thinking it was Afib but I was in sinus rhythm. No SOB or pain. Turned out to be a small blood clot in my lung. I'm on a heparin drip and hoping to go home tomorrow.
Doctors are pretty baffled as they say this is unusual for someone who has no prior clot history and has been active since surgery.
If you had MV repair, were you sent home on newly prescribed blood thinners, or only aspirin?
Don't ignore a suddenly high HR, it's not always Afib!

MV repair via sternotomy with Dr. Kevin Accola at AdventHealth Orlando on 3/5 was a success and I finally got discharged yesterday (Monday). The first night in ICU I went into AFib but the external pacer got me back into rhythm pretty quickly. Then my BP and HR were too low so they gave me lots of fluids which did the trick but put 12 pounds on me, causing my right lung to have fluid build up. They drained it and then came Lasix to eliminate the fluids, which brought down my potassium levels. The end result is it may have added a couple of days to my stay but I felt so cared for and lucky to have come through everything well. I do remember waking up on the vent and trying desperately to tell my husband I felt SOB and my throat hurt. I kept writing AIR on his hand with my fingers and they thought I meant I was warm! The hardest part for me is the loss of appetite. I only had a few bites of food the first three days.I got some appetite back yesterday but not much. I'm walking 3x a day, a bit more each day and it feels great. I generally feel great until about 3pm, then feel like someone slipped me a sedative😃. In the hospital I was on muscle relaxers, Tylenol and dilaudid for pain but dropped dilaudid after two days. I was sent home with the muscle relaxers and Tylenol, plus the last couple of doses of steroid and aspirin. I am off the beta blockers after 14 years! Some muscle pain in back, shoulders and neck but incision/bone pain is pretty minor, mostly when cough or getting in and out of bed. Overall, the entire experience was not as bad as I imagined it to be. Having always been in great health otherwise and never having had surgery before, I was expecting a much scarier experience. Reading all of your experiences and recommendations helped tremendously! Thanks to Adam for his dedication to this site, it is truly invaluable.

Laura Mazzeo I had major pain in the back of my shoulder/neck area after my MVR & septal myectomy. The best thing for me were tiger balm patches (better than the lidocaine patches they gave me in the hospital and the muscle relaxers). Susan Lynn Christine - I had a mitral valve repair (via a minimally-invasive mini-thoracotomy) almost six years ago. The only difference is the way the heart is accessed - the surgery - whether it's done via sternotomy, mini- sternotomy, mini-thoracotomy, or robotic - is all the same. Repair or replacement depends on the condition of the valve and the expertise of the surgeon.
Please let me know if you have any questions! I'd be happy to answer them!

Susan Lynn Christine - I had a non-robotic mini-thoracotomy. There was a small incision (about 3 inches) that my surgeon hid in my right breast crease. I also had two additional entry 'holes' on the right side of my back for a camera and other instruments. There is also one more small incision to access the femoral artery at the top of right thigh for mini-t patients. This is where the bypass machine is connected. The nerves on the right side of the surgical site were frozen. So, I didn't have pain, in fact, I was numb in that area. However, as these nerves regenerated, over the next year, I had pins and needles and intermittent sudden short twinges of pain in that area before normal feeling returned. I would choose it again, but make the decision that's right for you. First and foremost is getting a good repair. Everything else is waaaay down on the priority list. As one robotic surgeon said to me, 'In a month, it won't matter how your heart was accessed.' He further stated the sternotomy and mini-sternotomy were the fastest methods of performing heart repairs and in his words, 'Sometimes you just want to get in and get out.' I appreciated his honesty, but checked full robotic off my list of options at that point. I wanted minimal time on the 'pump' and wasn't thrilled about a sternum cut. The mini-t gave me the best of both worlds. Good luck!

Susan Lynn Yes, Christine. I understand that the mini-thoracotomy is a bit longer than the sternotomy. The surgeon is suturing the annulplasty ring through the space between your ribs. My surgeon said I was on bypass for about an hour and a half. Although, I also had chords repaired. Maybe one of the sternotomy heart warriors can speak to the time for their repairs. I was told that full robotic could be significantly longer. Put your questions together for your prospective surgeon consultations. Good luck with your research.
