Dear all, hope all are doing good and planning fun for the Memorial day weekend! I am reaching out to provide update on my surgery back in December and have a question as well. It appears everything is going well. had my 3 months follow up after my ascending aortic aneurysm repair and aortic valve replacement surgery. I have resumed my full time work. resumed my travel as well. Last month while in Europe, I had to rush to catch my connection and I was carrying my cabin bag and felt sob on running. this past week I was walking faster than usual and carrying my office bag. again felt sob. I do not feel sob on my daily routine activities. I am active at work. but these episodes when I had to perform little more than normal activities, I felt slight sob. wanted to ask is this normal. Although I have been cleared by Dr Roselli but have not resumed exercise in my daily routine as yet. Planning to get into that schedule soon. has anyone else felt similarly? is it normal to expect this slight shortness of breath on somewhat heavy exercise? Please advise. Thank you in advance.

Teressa Phillips I had surgery the beginning of January. I'm fine with my normal work/commute, but anything beyond that wears me out and I sometimes get SOB. There are still things like loading and unloading the dishwasher that I just can't handle. Bending and stretching make me weak and SOB.

Susan Lynn I thought my shortness of breath was abnormal and my cardiologist ordered a cardiac stress test. But, to my surprise, it was normal. Before surgery I was gasping with a small amount of exertion. I guess I thought that I should be able to run a marathon, afterward. Lung capacity can be affected after surgery and using the spirometer during recovery is so important.
I still have issues with shortness of breath, particularly when climbing stairs, but consistent exercise does help. Best of luck to you!
DeWayne Adamson I think that's normal. Happens to people in good health.

Yumiko Ishida I think it is ok as long as you are able to recover from it in a reasonable time. My surgery was January. I was afraid to push myself too much in cardiac rehab at first, but now am trying to see how far I can go and still come back quickly. It is taking longer than I would like, but so much better than before surgery!

Hi all, happy new year everyone here. I have a question for folks who had surgical repair of aortic valve with or without aneurysm. I am roughly 10 days out, building my stamina, walking, etc but I am bothered by increase in heart rate. My HR stays in late 90’s and early 100’s. Is it expected post operatively? Can anyone please share their experience. Thank you all

Deena Z For sure, I was discharged with a beta blocker. Needed it for about one month. Heart rate went down a bit every month, until at the 13th month I was lower than before my mitral and tricuspid valve surgery. My HR was in the normal range -though at the higher end of normal -before the surgery and got to low 60s after. You are still really early.

Susan Lynn I also was prescribed Metoprolol along with a few other meds (diuretic, blood thinner, etc.) when I was discharged. If you're concerned, ask your surgeon or nurse case manager. They'll be happy to advise you. Cardiac rehab professionals can also monitor your vitals before, during, and after exertion. They'll tell you if you're out of the recommended range for your stage of recovery. All the best!

Post op day 4 !! Things are much better today. On floor walked for the first time and felt good. But my heart is still not waking up to good rhythm. I am likely going to need a pacemaker. Adam Pick Hi Sandeep, Welcome to the "other side"! As you have probably already learned, it is not uncommon for heart surgery patients to experience post-op heart rhythm issues. I'm not sure which type of issue you are experiencing... But, here is a video about AFib after heart surgery that was recently filmed with Dr. Burns at the Cleveland Clinic. Hi all, I am Sandeep 43 year old guy. I had an aortic valve surgery at age of 23 for AR due to perhaps bicuspid valve. Got a mechanical valve and so far had no issues. Last year I was jogging and felt some weird pulsations and decided to check it and found to have ascending aortic aneurysm which is 5.3 cm now. I am scheduled for a root replacement with onyx valve by Dr Eric Roselli at Cleveland Clinic on December 21. As the date is getting close I am getting very nervous. I am otherwise healthy with no other medical issues. Any advise or guidance will be appreciated. I hope I am making the right call by getting it done. Thank you all!
