Tomorrow I am having a Doppler (? Maybe the correct term? I will have the name tomorrow) on my neck. My coronary blood vessels are “smooth as silk”, a Dr told me last year. Is it possible to have constrictions further away, like in the carotids? It’s probably not a heart issue and thus irrelevant to this community. Just thinking out loud. Just wonder….
Richard Munson I always thought they checked the carotids during the echo..

Marie Myers Yes, it is possible to have plaque in your carotid arteries when your coronaries are good. As we age, we all get some plaque in our vessels. 50% of people over 70 have plaque in their vessels. Keep in mind that 70% or more blockage can require treatment. Vessels that are less than 70 % blocked will be deemed ok for surgery especially if you are not having symptoms. So when the docs say your arteries are good, it doesn’t necessarily mean that there is no plaque. Hope that makes sense..

Went to the valve Dr. Got mixed feelings. He is young enough to be my son! 🤪
Very nice, took the time to explain the anatomy and function of the heart. (I already knew about it, but was curious what he would say). Didn’t talk down at all.
At first he was saying it looks like we can wait awhile, check back in 6 months. But after further convo determined we needed more tests, going to have the interdermal monitor restarted.
And, going to have scans done on my carotid arteries to see if that is causing my double vision and dizzy spells.
What bothers me, is that all the articles I have read online and statements from other drs is that growing fatigue was a symptom of valve stenosis. But this Dr says it is not. That it’s a symptom of something else going on. I don’t have shortness of breath that he talked about, because I don’t push myself to that limit. (Hmm, should I?)
So more tests, more hide and wait. Don’t mind the waiting, it’s the ambiguity of it all. 🥴

Rita Savelis My doctors have suddenly all turned young and it's weird. I hear you. My oncologist and radiation therapist recently had their first babies! (Not my heart surgeon who retired soon after my operation). When you get "shortness of breath" it's not because you are pushing yourself. Suddenly a normal activity like climbing some stairs or walking a short distance make you short of breath. You would recognise it and this is is often a sign that the need for surgery is getting closer. However, there are those who never have this sign and so looking at regular echos to see how valves are evolving is also important. It's an art and not a science so there is not only one way to proceed. I don't remember fatigue or dizziness, just the beginnings of shortness of breath. After that my surgery took place about 6 months later. It was my choice when to schedule it as it was complex (double valve surgery + third valve reinforcement) they wanted me to be ready. I could have waited longer. Sometimes I wish I had (It was 9 1/2 years ago). Take care.

Kimberly Eisenhut Valerie, Good news! Who did you get in with? Please keep us posted, and wish you a great meeting with your surgeon! You may want to bring someone with and/or record your meeting. I know I tend to forget some things when I am stressed. This way, you can still be "present" when at apt., but go home and have all of the answers recorded. I had a virtual apt a few years ago with a surgeon, and I could not write his answers fast enough, much less remember everything he said. I will be recording next time.

Marie Myers I got one unit, but many times a transfusion is not necessary. You will be quite anemic from blood loss after surgery, which contributes to the exhaustion. Your body will make more blood cells during recovery to replace what has been lost. So nutrition is quite important for healing and replacement of lost blood cells.

How much exercise is too much? How do I keep myself fit (I won’t say in shape, lol! Round is a shape! Ha!) How long will I be down and unable to take care of my parents? Can I still live alone? When will all this happen?!

Kimberly Eisenhut Welcome Valerie! You are in the right place to ask questions and make some new heart valve friends! It can be intimidating, but finding a surgeon and the right care is important, so just keep looking and making those phone calls until you find someone you are comfortable with. I have not had my surgery yet for my Tricuspid, but I do know a thing or two about fighting to find the right care. Are you seeing a cardiologist who specializes in valves? If not, please find one (1st step). What testing have you had done so far and what are the results? These are things this community and site can help you with. Navigating the best Drs and hospitals is so helpful with this site Adam Pick has created for us. I also would suggest getting his book and asking any questions you may have, as there are always people here that are more than happy to try to answer them with kind, open hearts https://www.heart-valve-surgery.com/free-ebooks https://www.heart-valve-surgery.com/adam-pick-book-2016-35.php

Your story is very similar to mine. But so choose a great surgeon who has done many surgeries on people who have your specific issues. God bless you on this journey.

I have had echocardiograms, that test thing where they put a camera down your throat to look at the back of the heart, and twice had the catheter camera go up my vein from the groin and look inside at the valve. Sorry, can’t remember what those are called. The camera tests showed moderate stenosis, but not enough to be worried about. This was over a year ago. Then two months ago, the echo showed more stenosis. Not severe, yet, but edging up to it.
