I'm pleased to announce that I'm back home from the hospital after a successful mitral valve repair! They even sent me home with serial numbers for my new, improved parts! This is only the first step on the long road to recovery, but it's a big one.
Rich, that's wonderful news. May your recovery be smooth and progressive!
Glad you are going home. It's got to be encouraging to have the road of healing ahead of you, and the surgery behind you. Sending you positive thoughts for a solid recovery.
Congrats, Rich! I had the mitral valve repair in June, and I have a plastic ring and a couple of Gortex chordae. What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger :)
Congratulations Rich! We'll keep our fingers crossed for your continued recovery. Take care of yourself and keep on going forward. Yea, you are home! (big day for us heart patients)

This is Rich's wife, Marilyn, happily reporting that his surgery this morning was successful! The doctor was able to repair his mitral valve - hooray! - and pronounced it "a solid repair job"! He also clipped the left atrial appendage. The breathing tube is out, and Rich is resting comfortably,... Read more.

Awesome news! The first thing I told my wife to tell me when I awoke was "repair or replace?" Fortunately, the MV was repaired. Praying for a speedy recovery!
Bravo - I'm 24 days out from MV repair and hope Rich has an uneventful recovery.
That is such good news! Wishing him a continued strong recovery!
Rich is doing well on Day 2 post-op. He moved to the step-down unit yesterday morning, and just had his chest tubes removed today! He's super tired and sleepy, but he's looking forward to walking more later in the day. Reading the posts from his fellow patients here has helped... Read more.
Yep day two was still rough. And day three. After that it gets a lot better. I was wed and by sat was feeling pretty good. As he feels better make sure he doesn't over do it. I felt so good I started bending over to shave. Moving things and... Read more.

Hello, everyone! I'm posting today for the first time (4 days before my surgery), but my wife has been following the HVS news feed closely and reporting on your insights for the past couple of months. The discussions about tissue vs. mechanical valves and what to expect during recovery have... Read more.

Yes Richard Iam also having my appendage clipped. It is one of the places where bloodclots form. My surgery is on October 29th. Best wishes for your recovery, you asany otherside are in my prayers
Thanks, Claire, and good luck to you in your surgery!

Thanks, Steven! The valve choice did come down to lifestyle; I don't want to be on Coumadin forever, so I'm opting for a porcine tissue valve if replacement is necessary, but hoping they can repair instead. Plus, the ticking of a mechanical valve would probably drive my wife crazy!
Rich, good luck tomorrow and in your recovery. As we ole valve takers say "see you on the other side." Its been 14 days since I received my 2nd chance, and yes it has been worth it even with the discomfort and inconvenience. My thoughts are with you and your... Read more.
Rich-I believe there is no wrong choice and also that your surgeon will be honest usually in letting you know if he thinks one or the other might be best for you. Also, with the technology moving along as fast as it does, many of us have been saying that... Read more.
