So shortly after I posted my last entry I started getting escalating pain in the right side of my chest and shoulder. It quickly became extremely unbearable, even with pain meds, easily the most pain I had ever experienced. The crash team descended as I started sweating profusely. I thought I was having a heart attack and was quite scared. The pain was treated successfully with IV diluadid and x-rays and an ekg were taken. The team came to the conclusion that Amit had gotten into my chest cavity via my chest tube wound. A CT scan was neg for clots. All clear on that one.
Today I had my electrical study done to check my rhythm. Initially everything went well but with further testing it was decided that I would need a pacemaker.
Wow, not the week I was excpecting at all!!! Well at least I get to go home tomorrow.

Don Catoe I pray you will overcome these problems, before they send you home. Sometimes after you are back home you may feel like you are on your own. I had a problem during the night and my wife and I could not figure out who we could call. Most surgeons have an on call person and after finding the number, we knew we were not alone! Pay attention to all the discharge instructions. We will continue to pray for you.

Well this one wasn't fun. I got up for an early morning walk around the hospital floor and did 5 laps. It felt good but may not have been a good idea. In the later morning the pain was intense, 8-9, around incision and right chest area. It took a few hours to get it controlled. So last night I was very aggressive with the pain meds and slept great. I was going easy on the meds worrying about dependency.
Anyway, I am scheduled for the angio test for my rhythm issue tomorrow and can not wait to get out of here.

Had an incident of bradycardia on Tuesday which required pacing. Recovered from that and am now at a consistent rhythm. Problem is that I have sustained a leftbundle branch block where one path that fires the ventricle is not working. They are going to wait to see if it kicks back in. If it doesn't, I will have to have a pacemaker placed. Not feeling great about this situation right now as everything is otherwise flowing smoothly. Third day post op and making three laps around the recovery floor.

I'm exactly two weeks out from similar surgery (are you having a Bentall procedure? Would seem so...)
Sending you and all of the healthcare professionals that touch you on this journey blessings and prayers.
It's not gonna be fun. But if you are like me, it's not gonna be as bad as your crazy mind can make things out to be, either!
Hang in there...one day at at time.

Still remember the breathing tube coming out. Pain med drip is making me loopy. Got everything pulled out but foley, pace maker leads and med drip by 1000 am. Sooooo much better after chest tube came out. Ticking like a Timex now.

Well, 6 days out and trying to enjoy the last days of what will be the old normal. I have a busy week with my daughter's 11th birthday, her fiddlefest and an out of town wedding to wrap up the week. I think that should be enough to keep my mind occupied. I keep envisioning walking into the hospital and prepping for surgery and wondering if I will hold up. My thought is that the more I run this through my mind the more prepared I will be. On an odd note, I had my first surgery related dream last night where I found that my scar went from my neck down to my belt line and I was wondering what the hell the did while they were in there. Anyway, the mental prep begins.

Laurie Baglio Hi Timothy! I am just over 2 weeks post-op. The part you are at now is the worst. You wake up thinking about the surgery, it keeps flooding your mind when you have a brief moment that is not taken up with another task and you go to bed thinking about it. We try to let on that we know it has to be done and we are fine but we are terrified. It seems so weak to say it but here, in this forum, you can say how you really feel. Man or woman, we have either been there or, as I found comforting, others are waiting and experiencing the same feelings as me.
I found peace the night before my surgery. I actually slept some.
It's not easy and there are some hurdles but you will be okay. As I was told, when you wake up try and think that the surgery is over and now it's one day at a time. Mending is slow but it will happen. God bless you and I'll be thinking about you.

Timothy Crawford Thanks Laurie. Early on in my diagnosis I was in denial. Eventual it hit me that this was real. I then transitioned to absolute fear of the surgery itself. Was I going to make it through. I'm not ready to die. All the things that go through your mind haunted me. As I am want to do, I dove into learning all about the procedure. Even watching YouTube videos of procedures. This helped me to understand and accept what was going to happen. After meeting with my surgeon, he put me at ease and I then began focusing more on recovery rather than worry about the surgery. I now rate the actual surgery as less of an obstacle than recovery.

Civita Fahey Tim reading your post, its like I posted it. I had the exact same feelings. As I get closer to my surgery, I like you still feel apprehensive, but after all the research, reading all the posts, and even speaking to some of the people on this site who have gone through and are on the other side, I don't feel afraid anymore.. nervous of course, but, I know the experts that do this, its what they do all day, every day and I will be their #1 concern for that time.. God will be on our side and he will guide them. He gave us the opportunity to be fixed and he will guide them and us through it.. Best of luck next week.. and please keep us posted on your recovery.

Keith Heflin Totally agree with the heat packs. I used several. I also had my wife work on the spasming areas with a tennis ball. I had multiple broken ribs a few years ago and they used one of those local electrical stimulation patches on me. I asked the doctor if they had those and he kinda looked at me like I was crazy. I guess they really don't want to apply electricity to you when they are running a continuous ECG on you. :-) They also have lidocaine patches, which I did not find did much for me.

Jan Persico Hi Timothy. Im originally from Buffalo, NY, now living in NC. I've been coming to the Cleveland clinic since 2010. Love this place. I had AVR surgery on Monday at the Clinic. My surgeon was Dr. Johnston. He's a rock star! He was able to do minimally invasive. The first two days out were tough. Luckily with the drugs, you won't remember too much. Everyone here is amazing, the care really is world class, and patients are first. I hope to be discharged tomorrow, with followup on Monday. Timothy, it will all be great! Stay strong. If there is anything I can do for you......let me know.

Things are moving along. The last two days I was in Cleveland having my pre op tests done and meeting with Dr Gosta Pettersson. The testing confirmed my need for surgery as my aortic valve was severely calcified and the valve area was down to .91. I spoke with Dr Pettersson and we discussed my options. He was a little reluctant to recommend a mechanical valve at first due to the requirement of lifelong Coumadin therapy. Once I explained to him that I was fully aware of the consequences of the mechanical valve, he put that choice on the top his list. So at this point I still have not decided between mech or bio. He also threw a third choice at me. The Ozaki procedure. This entails using your own pericardial tissue to fashion new valve leaflets on the fly. After discussing the options with my wife and realizing that I don't want to make ohs a habit, I am most likely going to go the mechanical route.
So that all being said, I am going to take the next week or so before surgery to get my mind in the right place to push me through surgery and focus on recovery. I will keep reading all the absolutely positive post that I have found on this site and hopefully keep adding to my journal.

I have been recently diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis as a result of a bicuspid valve. News to me. Initial diagnosis had me scheduled for a six month monitoring regimen until an esophageal echo confirmed the need for surgery. I sought out the best medical care I could find. This lead me to the Cleveland Clinic.. I am now scheduled for surgery on February 20th with Dr Gosta Patterson. Ever since I was diagnosed, I began my research on my condition and the procedures involved in "curing" my problem. This led me to a couple sites that helped me to better understand the procedure as well as the very strong emotional impact. It is strange how I am anxious to get it over with so I can recover but at the same time I am scared #%*€less of the surgery. I continue to do my research and learning everything I can about my surgery (YouTube is amazing).

Catie B Hi Timothy, and welcome! I well understand how terrifying the prospect of this surgery is. I think most everyone here does. I'm sure getting that diagnosis stunned you.
Dr Pettersson replaced my aortic valve, aortic root and dilated aorta last September. You would be hard-pressed to find anyone with more experience than he has. While I was up there, several Cleveland Clinic staff told me if they needed heart surgery themselves, that they would choose him.
Like you, I researched all I could in advance of my surgery. Understanding as much as possible about what was going to happen definitely helped.
I hope the month will fly by for you and that all your arrangements will go smoothly. Keep us posted.

Ron Broadhead Tim - Its great that you've done your homework and have developed such a good understanding of the procedure. The surgery is a really big thing but has almost become routine. The surgeons and hospitals have gotten really good at aortic valve replacement and the current generation of valves are really quite nice. In the end I looked forward to the surgery and after the surgery looked forward to healing so that I could do things again. The surgery is a gateway to a new and better life.
