Hello to all, its been awhile since I've posted. I hope everyone is doing great and feeling better and best of wishes to those having surgery soon! I wanted to give a quick update... It has been 17 weeks post Ross procedure, and this is me at mountain Monserrate in Bogota, Colombia (10,000ft above sea level)... it was the most physically challenging task I have done since surgery, but I felt amazing once up there!! I finish rehab this week and I can say that it has definitely made me feel back to normal!! had my last virtual visit with my Cardiologist about a month ago and told me just to check up yearly with him. All is good and life is good, grateful to be alive. Everyone be safe and take care of yourselves.

Hey folks, quick question on scars...for me having a scar prior to surgery was the least of my problems but I am just a little concern on the healing process...its been about 10 weeks since surgery and I know its still recent but my scar still looks purplelish and at times red, it itches at times too. It's not inflamed or nothing like that...but just curious is this normal? part of the healing process? for those who have had surgery months ago or years how is your scar looking now? thanks any info is much appreciated.
Kristian M. Sorry I meant to say the thought of having a scar prior to surgery**

George Gardopee Hi Kristian. The itching is pretty common. Itching was my only complaint after about three weeks post surgery. My scar was raised and reddish for months. I’m just a week shy of one year today and the redness is almost gone, some of it is still raised, and it still occasionally itches. Incidentally, I also had endocarditis prior to surgery. My scar is still visible but only a fraction of what it was 6 months ago. A few weeks ago several people on this site posted photos of their scars - it might be worth taking a look at those photos.

Today marks 6 weeks exactly post Ross procedure. Nurse came in today and finally removed my PICC line. I was under antibiotic treatment, and I am finally done. Tomorrow, I go home!! I am grateful I was able to stay near the hospital and went to all my follow ups while in the Cleveland area. I am for sure walking a ton more and feel like I can start doing some small jogging. I still got some minor aches in my chest here and there while I am getting up from bed, but it fades away once I start the day. Also, my heart rate has gotten better being in the low 70s now at rest. I am going back home and ready to start Cardiac rehab. Have a follow up virtual appointment with my Cardiologist next month and will definitely continue with them. I am glad this site is around, and we can all come here and share stories and learn from one another. To all, take care. I will definitely keep updated once I start rehab.

Mohammed Abdulrahman Hi Kristian Congratulations for your rapid recovery. I l knew that you are under antibiotics. Why you are taking the long-term course of antibiotics?, have you infected with endocarditis ever?. In last year 2021, i had infected with covid-19 or something like amazing unknown inflammation. The doctor has prescribed course of antibiotics for 17 days. But yesterday , another doctor said that 17 days antibiotics are not enough to get rid off the bacterial infection in the heart muscle, at least 6 weeks because of the bacteria to be as hidden in the heart and should take lot of time to eliminate from them

Kristian M. Hey Mohammed, yes, I was unfortunately infected with endocarditis prior to my surgery. I was 2 weeks under antibiotics first and although I had no bacterial in my bloodstream it was kinda too late, a vegetation had formed in my bicuspid valve and made a perforation, I still didn't have any symptoms, but it was sure time for surgery. After surgery, I was told I need to remain on antibiotics for an additional 6 weeks in order to make sure this infection is gone for sure. I still remember when my surgeon told me that there was no way to take that infection out if it wasn't thru surgery. I am just glad I am done and hoping this never happens again. I saw in your story that doctors are thinking you may have contracted endocarditis?? I would urge you to double check on this and have them do some blood cultures, and if it's the case, please be on top of it and get your antibiotic treatment as soon as possible. Endo is no joke and I wish this to no one.

Mohammed Abdulrahman Actually, when i was infected with inflammation, i did 3 blood culture test and all the tests were clean without any signs of bacteria in blood. But the doctor guessed that the bacteria might be in the heart and not in blood stream. The symptoms i faced , where lasting 4 months, were cough, fever, anemia, gradual loss of appetite red urine and lately spleen enlargement. After the antibiotic course has been finished, everything returned as normal and i recovered my health and energy. However, the Echo outcomes revealed that the blood leak of aortic valve is severe.
Rose Madura Kristian, glad things are looking up for you now. Godspeed.

Quick question for my post-surgery warriors, do you still take medications or have to continue taking meds forever? Angela Meletiadis Im taking acenocoumarol for six months, the dosage of which is regulated based on my INR figures. I have to avoid foods with high levels of vitamin K, like leafy greens, brocolli, etc while taking this med. At about six months postop, I will be put on a Holter in order to determine if I can stop taking acenocoumarol and change to salospir (asprin), which doesn't require so much monitoring. I'm looking forward to eating more leafy vegetables.

Timothy Andre I just spoke with my surgeon today regarding my meds. As you know I am a Ross patient and I am 6 months post-op. He agreed it is time for me to ween off my meds. I cut the dosage in half today and will do so for a month. Then I will cut the dosage in half again for another month. After two months I should be good to go. He also told me I am ok to stop taking aspirin today. Everyone is different and unfortunately there is no black and white answer for this. My cardiologist had different ideas as did my primary care doctor. For that reason I contacted my surgeon because I trust his opinion above all. After I am off my meds I will continue to monitor my BP to make sure all is good. Barring no sudden increases I then can continue living life without any meds. This is one of the main reasons I chose the Ross Procedure.

Rose Madura I have been on Metoprolol Succinate 25 mg per day, Amlodipine 2.5 mg per day and 81mg of aspirin every other day. The first two take care of BP and keep my heart rate lower. I take the aspirin every other day because I sometimes need to take ibuprofen, both of which can be hard on the stomach. And I'll most likely take them forever.

Well, today marks 4 weeks post-surgery (Ross procedure). I gotta say, I feel ALOT better and with more energy, huge difference! Had my brother come visit me this past weekend and went to some nearby museums and I walked a TON! got back and felt fine, tired but I was feeling good. Still got some chest soreness that comes and goes but the pain has subsided alot as well as some fevers I was having the first couple of weeks. I got 2 more weeks under an antibiotic treatment I am on and so excited to complete this and go back home. I do at times, when like relaxing watching tv feel my heart beating but like really strong beats, has anyone experience this?... at first my heart rate was like in the high 90s low 100s but now its gone down to low 80s when at rest. Just hoping it gets better with time. I am also getting my blood counts back on track so happy for that. Thanks again to this amazing community. Take care of yourselves and please be safe.

Hello everyone, just passing by to wish whoever is about to get surgery a good luck and that everything will be fine! Also, for those in recovery like me hope you are all feeling better. Just to give an update, I am 2 weeks post op from my ROSS procedure done at the Cleveland Clinic by Dr. Shinya Unai. I am feeling a little more energetic with the days but still have some upper chest soreness and some pains that come and go, also have a sharp pain near one of the wounds where the chest tubes were at whenever I cough or sneeze...God knows I don't want to sneeze!! I am hoping these symptoms get better with time, I know its a process and will take time to heal. I also have a follow up appoint this Friday so I will address these concerns as well. Anyway, thank you all for the continue support and good luck!
