Abbott, a Leading Heart Valve Manufacturer, Develops New 5-Minute COVID-19 Test

By Adam Pick on April 7, 2020

Big news!

I am happy to report that Abbott, a leading manufacturer of heart valve replacement and repair devices, has developed a new, rapid molecular test that can detect COVID-19 in just 5 minutes.  Yes, just 5 minutes!!!

This is a HUGE improvement compared to other coronavirus tests that can take several days to get positive or negative results.

Abbott started shipping the coronavirus test, known as the ID NOW system, on March 31 after receiving a U.S. Food & Drug Administration Emergency Use Authorization.  In this video, Gavin Cloherty, Head of Infectious Disease Research at Abbott, describes the features and the advantages of the ID Now system.

I just learned that Abbott has already shipped over 190,000 tests. According to Abbott’s recent update, the company is now quickly ramping-up manufacturing of the ID NOW test system to a capacity greater than 2 million tests per month.

Plus…

There’s more good news… Abbott is working on several new tests for the fight against COVID-19.  Watch this video with Miles White, CEO of Abbott, to learn more.

Thanks Abbott!!!

On behalf of the patients, the front-line medical care providers, the hospitals and the global healthcare system, many thanks to Abbott for proactively responding to the COVID-19 pandemic with its new ID NOW test!
