Well, the surgery is over as is the ICU experience, the Step Down Unit, and the post-op clearance sessions. We are celebrating with a last night's dinner in the city's Little Italy section.
I highly recommend CC for heart surgery, and at the least, for a second opinion. I will continue my after care with my cardiologist at Penn Medicine in Philly.
I am looking forward to being with all the friends and family at home who weren't physically here with me in CLE, but incredibly supportive throughout the journey.
Thank you to my Adam Pick Heart Valve group support buddies. I am most willing to lend any assistsnce to members beginning their journey.

Judy Paul Hello everyone! I am now 16 days post-op. and one week back home in Philly after my AVR redo in Cleveland. The first night ( last Thurs.) was tough - I couldn't sleep and was feeling very emotional. I was concerned that I was going to have some real difficult sleep problems. However, miraculously, the next night, and every night thereafter ( keeping fingers crossed!) I have had a really great sleep. I take a shower, rub cortizone cream on the skin sensitive to all the bandages, etc, take one 500mg Tylenol, two baby aspirins, and an OTC sleeping aid tablet ( would you believe a Costco Kirkland brand?!) I am a stomach sleeper, so for the first AVR in 2012 I had great difficulty sleeping on my back. However, this time I can sleep on my side - the incision ( which is much larger than the first time) is remarkably comfortable with my side-sleeping pattern. I am hoping that my 'mind over matter' approach to sleeptime keeps me in good stead, because there are very few more miserable experiences that not being able to sleep after OHS. I have not been napping, though. Since I stopped taking the pain meds in the hospital, I haven't felt very tired. A tip, gals - I wear a sports bra ( a very soft one) 24/7 - really helps.
Phyllis Petersen Fantastic Judy! It sounds like you're doing really well.

The surgery is over! I am in a step down unit at the Cleveland Clinic. Today I am free of chest tubes, wires, big guaze patches. There are quite a few incisions as this was an AVR redo. The docs told me that all went well. Looking forward to release from the hospital in a couple of days. Then, after a post release visit two days thereafter, we should be heading home to Philly!

My surgery - an AVR redo- is a week away at the Cleveland Clinic. I finally organized all the information that CC sent to me into a binder that I will review on the drive to Ohio from Philly on Saturday. I am ready to get the surgery behind and to let the healing begin. It is really tough on a person's mental and emotional state to have to go thru two OHS experiences in less than 5 years.

Hello- this is my first time sharing my story in this community. I will try to be brief. I had an AVR at HUP in May, 2012. My native valve had become seriously stenotic and had to be replaced. My surgery went well, and recovery was fine, although it was quite painful at times. Anyhow, less than three years later, a routine Echo showed that the valve ( a tissue valve) was leaking. For a year, I was monitored by my cardiologist, and the leak was becoming more serious. I was scheduled for an AVR redo at HUP on September 26, 2016 after having a series of tests throughout the summer. At the time of the pre-admission testing, after I did all of the usual testing, my surgeon entered the exam room and told me that I could decide to wait and be monitored every 4 months with an Echo. I was quite distressed by this turn of events. I visited my cardiologist the next day. He advised me to seek a second opinion out of the Philadelphia area as my surgeon is quite well known in the cardiac surgery community and I should seek an unbiased opinion. Fast forward, I went to Cleveland Clinic for a two day testing and consultation experience with a cardiologist and a cardiac surgeon. These doctors were amazing. They reviewed my records from Penn ( including the report of my first AVR in 2012), and the results of the CC tests, including an Echo administered on the first day of testing. Their opinion - the valve was leaking seriously and my aorta was mildly enlarged due to the leak. Recommendation - an AVR redo sooner rather than later. So I am scheduled to return to Cleveland Clinic for a day of pre-op testing on Monday, March 6 and the surgery on Tuesday, March 7. I have complete faith in the staff and doctors at the Cleveland Clinic. However, I am a bit overwhelmed by the logistics of having such serious surgery so far away from home. I welcome any advice, suggestions, insight from members of this community. Thank you

Cathleen Weed So sorry this is happening. If I can help you in any way, please let me know. It's great that you sought out a second opinion. Are you a candidate for TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement)? Either way, you will be in good hands and your new surgeons will learn from what happened last time. Perhaps an aneurysm started and that caused the valve to leak rather than the other way around (this happened to me in 2005). You may just need a larger valve size :/.

Phyllis Petersen I traveled from Tucson, AZ to Cleveland Clinic to have my mitral valve repaired. My situation isn't quite the same as I was able to stay with family for more than a week after only 1 1/2 hrs. from CC and I had a robotic repair which doesn't involve breaking the sternum. There are other people on here who have also traveled for their heart valve surgeries. It's worthwhile to go where you feel you'll get the best result. The logistics will take care of themselves. CC has a concierge who can help with travel and hotel arrangements. There are also couches in the rooms long enough for a person to sleep on if you don't want to spring for the room the hotel for the person who accompanies you. They're very accommodating. I wound up paying for the Holiday Inn on the hospital campus for my sister, but it was worth it having someone nearby. She would stop and pick me up a cup of Tazo chai tea each morning, which made my day.

Judy Paul Thank you everyone for your helpful responses to my post. I feel so confident now that I have a community to which I may turn re: OHS and the Cleveland Clinic. Cathleen - As of now no one knows why my tissue valve began to fail so soon after installation. Hopefully, we will be able to secure definitive information once the valve is replaced. And, no I am not a candidate for the TAVR. Perhaps if this second AVR should fail in the future, I would be able to have a TAVR then. Phyllis - we actually did speak with the CC concierge when we visited earlier this month for the second opinion. We did a true 'trial run' of the campus, staying at the Holliday Inn, checking out the Miller Pavillion ( made sure there was a Starbucks there!). We are all set with a two week reservation for Mar.4-Mar.19 at the Holiday Inn. My husband is considering some place to stay in the Cleveland area for an additional week if necessary - that is a refinement for a later date. Kevin - please let us know how you do when you are at the CC in Feb. What type of surgery are you having? Why did you decide to travel from Seattle? Have you worked on your logistics yet? Shannon - my surgeon is Dr. Lars Svensson. The cardiologist who consulted on the second opinion was Dr. Hammer, a super guy.
I do know that I am in good hands. I welcome continued communication with all of you. Happy Holidays!

Phyllis Petersen The cafeteria at the hospital is run by Sodexo, who ran my old job's caf. They have a nice omelet bar in the morning, where they make omelets to order. There are other foods as well and pretty reasonable. That's also where my sister was getting my Tazo chai, which is my favorite tea. I also grabbed a Sabrett's hot dog off a cart by the hospital that was pretty good. We had several meals at the Holiday Inn too. If you can get over to Little Italy (we walked there and took a bus back), we really liked Etna Ristorante (closed on Mondays though). There is also shuttles that go to several places. It should all be in your package. Plus, nice services at the hospital itself. You have plenty of time to plan!

Catie B You will do well in Cleveland. I flew up from TX to have surgery 9/29. Ended up needing to stay a few more days than expected afterward, due to complications. I was at the Holiday Inn. Though I was on my own throughout my time there, and it was challenging, they seemed ready for every contingency and helped me get through things. The shuttle is a huge help, but many times I was able to walk back and forth from Holiday Inn to my heart appointments or to get food in the J (cardiac) Building. I found the Holiday Inn staff very helpful and flexible also. And the concierge got me a flight very rapidly when I was released to go home.

Judy Paul Catie - thank you for reaching out. I am in awe of you- to do this on your own is remarkable. I hope that you are doing well. It is reassuring to hear that the CC staff was so helpful and able to assist in whatever happened during your post-op. We have already made reservations for the Holiday Inn for two weeks - March 4-March 18. I guess we could stay longer if it becomes necessary. We have a long 7 hour drive home to Philly. This is my second AVR and now all the memories of the surgery and stay in the hospital are beginning to resurface. I had blocked out a lot four years ago, and now that it is a reality, I am a bit shaky. I received the surgical packet from Cleveland Clinic yesterday, and now I am trying to pace myself as I have two months more before I begin this journey to OHS - again! Many thanks to you, and all the members of this amazing community, for your support.

Judy Paul Cathleen - this is belated response to your post to me. No, unfortunately, I am not a candidate for TAVR. If there has to be another AVR replacement ( and I sincerely hope that there will not be!!!) I will probably have the TAVR procedure. So, sadly it is another OHS for me. I am encouraged by the professionalism I saw at Cleveland Clinic, and how there is a team working with you through out the whole process. I am working on being less worried about the logistics of being so far away from home esp. in such a debilitating condition. Trying to stay positive.

Catie B Thank you, Judy--my recovery is coming along. Anxiety is one of the hardest things to contend with in the lead-up to surgery. I had an abundance! I hope you can do some relaxing activities and can talk or write or whatever works to help express your feelings. I can well imagine your blocking out the first surgery and having memories and fears arise. I hate that you're having to face a re-op and so soon.
For sure, the Holiday Inn can extend or subtract days with ease.
I have only read and heard phenomenal things about your surgeon. He is creme de la creme!

Phyllis Petersen I almost went to Jamaica in mid-January, but we changed it to Mazatlan, Mexico.

Cathleen Weed Hi Judy :) It sounds like you are doing a great job of preparing both physically and mentally. It's never easy! It takes courage to go back a second time so soon. I remember the feeling between my 1st and 2nd (about 3 years apart). It's shocking to the system but you are more prepared than you realize. You'll have a more empowering experience because you know what to expect. Yes, next time (if needed) TAVR for sure! It's an amazing procedure. I left the next day. Just a note, my aortic aneurysm is what caused my 3rd OHS (pulled the valve apart and of course the aneurysm had to be replaced with a Dacron graft) so ask what they plan to do for your aorta to prevent that in the future. Hope you are enjoying the New Year so far. 2017 will be a year of courage and healing and renewed strength for you :).
