It's hard to believe surgery was a week ago today. The surgery, which went as expected, lasted 5.5 hours. After about 24 hours in the Coronary ICU I was transferred to the cardiac floor at St. Vincent's Hospital (Portland, OR).
I am amazed at how well I feel this soon after surgery, but clearly know recovery will continue to be step by step.
Thanks for your comments of encouragement on my pre-surgery entry.

Upon scheduling my surgery a month ago, it seemed like August 10th was a long way down the road. Here it is already August 6th and just a few days away from surgery. At times these weeks have gone slow, yet there have been days in which time moved right along.
This window of time before surgery has been beneficial in many ways:
1. Taking time for rest and relaxation. This included oportunities to hike in the mountains, at the coast and in the central Oregon forests.
2. Time for having the required medical tests and appointments in preparation for surgery
- CT Scan
- Angiogram
- Checkup with rheumatologist
- Checkup with dentist
3. Having time to emotionally prepare for the surgery and follow-up.
4. Being able to hear the stories of others who have had similar conditions as I do
At this point I am feeling good about the days ahead!
Kenny Knox Sounds like you are ready JC! You'll do great!

Mary K Congratulations, it is almost here! Just a suggestion, do you have any low energy activities ready? Favorite music to listen to, maybe books or Audible books, any kind of handwork that you enjoy, a Netflix queue. Favorite friend's phone numbers. The first weeks are a lesson in patience. I have watched the entire Downton Abbey series on Amazon Prime, and was so grateful for the enjoyable way it filled the time.

Dan D. The one thing surgery definitely fixes is the shock of finding out that you eventually need surgery and the anxious waiting that precedes it. You will be on the other side shortly and on the slow steady path back to health. Good Luck!
