Carilion Clinic

Carilion Clinic's Structural Heart and Valve Center provides specialized treatment, including evaluation, diagnosis and medical management, for patients with heart valve disease. We take a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, with every patient benefiting from the collaborative expertise of a team of experts, including general cardiologists, structural interventional cardiologists, and heart surgeons with a special interest in structural and valvular heart disease. The team meets weekly to discuss each case and identify the best treatment strategy for every patient.

Depending on how your health and activity level is affected, you may need to have a heart valve repair or replacement. Carilion Clinic’s Structural Heart & Valve Center is the only program in western Virginia able to treat certain patients with severe aortic stenosis with the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure.

Advancing Minimally Invasive Care with TAVR

Carilion Clinic’s Structural Heart & Valve Center is using three TAVR approaches, including transfemoral (valve is inserted through an artery in the groin), transapical (valve is delivered through the apex of the heart by making a small incision between the ribs), and transaortic (valve is delivered directly into the diseased aortic valve through a small incision made on the sternum).

Our team utilizes two different brands of valves. One is the Edwards SAPIEN valve and the other is MedTronic’s CoreValve. These valves come in different sizes, so our team analyzes each patient’s situation to determine which valve will be the most successful for their condition.
