William Stixrud, an 80-year-old retired civil engineer and former U.S. ambassador, experienced a life-threatening type A aortic dissection while at his home in Guatemala.

After collapsing, he was rushed to a local hospital where doctors quickly realized they lacked the necessary resources to treat his condition.

Faced with a critical decision, his family worked with Baptist Health International’s Coordination of Care team to arrange an urgent transfer to Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute. There, a multidisciplinary team, led by Dr. Mehrdad Ghoreishi, was prepared to perform the complex surgery required to save his life. Upon arrival, Mr. Stixrud was taken immediately into surgery, where Dr. Ghoreishi and his team performed a total aortic arch replacement and aortic root operation.

Shane Foster, a 59-year-old from the Cayman Islands, turned to Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute when he needed complex heart surgery to replace a leaky aortic valve. When Luis Vicens learned he needed cardiac bypass surgery for clogged arteries, he knew he wanted the least invasive approach possible. His research led him to Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, where he found Dr. Joseph McGinn Jr., a pioneer in minimally invasive coronary artery bypass surgery. Dr. McGinn's technique, which avoids opening the chest or stopping the heart, offers patients reduced pain and recovery time compared to traditional surgery.

After being told elsewhere that a minimally invasive option wasn't possible, Mr. Vicens took matters into his own hands and sought out Dr. McGinn, whose advanced approach and patient-focused care gave Mr. Vicens the confidence he was looking for. In Mr. Vicens’ case, his condition was further complicated by a narrowing of his aortic valve, which required a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) performed by Dr. Nish Patel. After the successful valve replacement, Mr. Vicens underwent a minimally invasive double bypass surgery five weeks later.

His recovery was swift, with minimal discomfort, allowing him to quickly return to his normal activities. Grateful for Dr. McGinn’s innovative techniques and patient-centered care, Mr. Vicens is now planning a series of international trips with his wife, reflecting the renewed energy and confidence his recovery has provided.
