I'm thrilled to celebrate a very special milestone at HeartValveSurgery.com! Dr. Mario Castillo-Sang, a cardiac surgeon at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Edgewood, Kentucky, has reached 100 patient reviews in our Surgeon Finder! Even more impressive, Dr. Castillo-Sang is only the 10th heart surgeon to achieve this remarkable milestone in the history of our website!
What makes this achievement truly special isn't just the number... It's the 100 patient experiences behind it. These reviews tell inspiring stories of patients overcoming their fears, traveling long distances for specialized care, benefiting from innovative surgical techniques, and returning to the activities they love.
Each review represents a personal journey. Together, they offer a powerful tribute to Dr. Castillo-Sang and the heart team at St. Elizabeth Healthcare. They also highlight something that is incredibly important to me: the power of patients helping patients. Let's celebrate this wonderful milestone by looking at Dr. Castillo-Sang's remarkable journey and hearing from some of the patients who helped make it possible.
Advancing Heart Valve Surgery Through Innovation
Dr. Castillo-Sang has dedicated much of his career to advancing minimally-invasive cardiac surgery, particularly a technique known as Totally Endoscopic Cardiac Surgery (TECS). Using sophisticated 3D imaging systems and specialized surgical instruments, Dr. Castillo-Sang performs certain complex heart operations through small incisions between the ribs, without opening the breastbone.
His expertise includes mitral valve repair and replacement, aortic valve surgery, and tricuspid valve procedures. For appropriately selected patients, endoscopic procedures can offer potential benefits including smaller incisions, less postoperative discomfort, and shorter hospital stays.
But what makes Dr. Castillo-Sang's story particularly interesting is his dedication to sharing these techniques with other surgeons around the world. As a leader in the Endoscopic Cardiac Surgeons Club, Dr. Castillo-Sang has helped educate cardiac surgeons about new technologies and approaches that may expand access to minimally invasive procedures. And, as his 100 patient reviews demonstrate, his patients appreciate much more than his technical expertise.
100 Reviews, So Many Meaningful Patient Experiences
As I read through Dr. Castillo-Sang's reviews, I was struck by the different journeys patients took before and after surgery.
Here are several experiences that stood out.
Ken Travels From Virginia for Endoscopic Mitral Valve Repair
Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of helping Ken and Ginny Grant from Virginia as they researched treatment options for Ken's severe mitral regurgitation. Ken wanted minimally invasive mitral valve repair but struggled to find a local surgical team offering the specific procedure he preferred. After exploring his options, Ken traveled to Northern Kentucky, where Dr. Castillo-Sang performed an endoscopic mitral valve repair.
Before surgery, Dr. Castillo-Sang met with Ken and Ginny during video consultations, showed them examples of similar operations, and explained what to expect during recovery.
We are so thankful that Dr. Castillo-Sang was recommended to us! Prior to surgery, we had two video conferences with Dr. Castillo-Sang. He showed us actual surgeries of mitral valve repairs that would be similar to Ken's operation. After showing us the video of those operations, Dr. Castillo-Sang then explained every detail of the healing process. Dr. Castillo-Sang is genuine and kind. He provided us excellent explanations that a layperson could easily understand. -- Ginny Grant, mitral valve patient spouse
Following the procedure, Ginny shared how impressed they were with the attention Ken received. Dr. Castillo-Sang visited him several times daily and showed them before-and-after images of his heart. Best of all, Ken was feeling great after returning home!
William Praises the Entire Surgical Journey
William Miller underwent aortic valve replacement with Dr. Castillo-Sang. His experience began with an initial consultation in October 2025, followed by diagnostic testing, additional appointments, and detailed conversations about his condition.
In his review, William expressed tremendous appreciation for Dr. Castillo-Sang's dedication, professionalism, and willingness to spend meaningful time discussing his care. He also praised the entire St. Elizabeth cardiac surgery team.
Dr. Castillo-Sang has been a blessing to my life and my family's life. From initially consulting with him in October 2025, to numerous scans, tests, and hour-long meetings with him into 2026, he honestly has been and is the most passionate and efficient surgeon and/or doctor I have ever witnessed. -- William Miller, aorticvalve patient
What stood out to me about William's experience was his appreciation for the complete journey—not simply the procedure, but everything that happened before, during, and after his operation.
Barbara Says She Feels 40 Again!
One of my favorite reviews came from Barbara Lewis, who underwent mitral valve replacement with Dr. Castillo-Sang. After surgery, Barbara enthusiastically described the care she received from Dr. Castillo-Sang and his team.
At 69 years old, I feel like I'm 40. - Barbara Lewis, mitral valve patient
How wonderful is that? Although recovery experiences vary from patient to patient, Barbara's story captures the hope so many people have when preparing for heart valve surgery: the opportunity to feel better and return to the activities that make life meaningful.
What Can 100 Patient Reviews Teach Us?
When I think about Dr. Castillo-Sang's milestone, I don't just see a collection of positive comments. I see valuable information that may help future patients prepare for one of the most important healthcare decisions of their lives.
Across Dr. Castillo-Sang's reviews, several themes emerge: detailed explanations, compassionate care, surgical expertise, attentive follow-up, and appreciation for the St. Elizabeth heart team. Of course, patient reviews should complement—not replace—objective clinical information such as procedure-specific experience, surgical outcomes, mitral valve repair rates, and recommendations from a patient's healthcare team.
But there is something uniquely valuable about hearing directly from people who have already experienced heart surgery. Their stories can help other patients ask better questions, understand what to expect, and feel more prepared for their own treatment journey. That's one of the reasons we created the Surgeon Finder at HeartValveSurgery.com.
From Patient Reviews to Surgical Innovation: My Experience With Dr. Castillo-Sang
I've also had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Castillo-Sang's dedication to patient education firsthand.
During a visit to Northern Kentucky for the Endoscopic Cardiac Surgeons Club meeting, I watched surgeons from around the world learn about innovative endoscopic cardiac procedures and the technologies making these techniques possible.
One of my favorite experiences was visiting the Endoscopic Cardiac Surgery Training Lab with Dr. Castillo-Sang and Jude Sauer, founder of LSI Solutions. During our interview, Dr. Castillo-Sang demonstrated how advanced 3D imaging and specialized suturing instruments can help surgeons perform complex valve procedures through remarkably small incisions.
It was fascinating! For patients who are curious about how minimally invasive heart surgery continues to evolve, I encourage you to watch our video.
One Remarkable Journey. One Special Message.
As we celebrate Dr. Castillo-Sang's 100 patient reviews, I want to share something that makes this milestone especially meaningful to me. Recently, Dr. Castillo-Sang sent me a personal message about his experience working with our patient community. Here is what he wrote:

Wow! I cannot tell you how much that message means to me. When I launched HeartValveSurgery.com in 2006, my goal was simple: Help people diagnosed with heart valve disease learn about their condition, understand their treatment options, and become empowered participants in their care.
To hear that Dr. Castillo-Sang's patients are using our website throughout their journeys is incredibly rewarding.
It also brings this milestone full circle. Patients are using HeartValveSurgery.com to educate themselves. Surgeons like Dr. Castillo-Sang are helping those patients explore and receive appropriate treatment.
