Well it has been almost 3 months and I am finally getting some feeling back where they had numbed my chest and down my whole right side. It is painful to touch my chest and right Breast, I am hoping it is because it is like it is waking up since the numbness is going. Did anyone else experience anything like this? I have been stressed out a lot and depressed too, and it is hard for me not to start cleaning when things get messsy, I have been washing clothes taking out trash off and on since a week after I came home. I have a roommate that helps a lot and always tells me to ask him he will do it. It is hard for me to not clean when I see something needs it. I really just worry too much. This thing with the numbness taking so long to go away and me feeling tender to the touch is a little scary. Thanks for reading this and God bless each and everyone on this site.

Cheryl Batzing Terry, I had MVR through my right side 2 years ago this December. The nurses told me due to all the nerves and muscle cut through to get to my valve, I would be numb. I was very tender in my right breast area for a year or longer, but it is slowly, very slowly returning the feeling. The inside of my right arm also was tingly/hurt to the touch for about the first year. It's getting better now. I'm told some never get the feeling totally back in their breast area, but the sensitivity should go away. I've still not been brave enough to go for my mammogram...guess I better! Will pray for your continued recovery. I"m a fellow Texan-From Dallas! Blessings.

Amy Dorsey I had minimally invasive robotic surgery and I'm still amazed they call it minimally invasive. I had 7 to 8 weeks of excruciating immobilizing pain when everything I read and was told by doctors was that it would only be a 1 to 3 week recovery. I was out of work for 10 weeks and in the ER two times post surgery and had multiple appointments with my primary care physician, Cardiologist, and pulmonologist for weeks. I am now at week 11-12 post surgery and finally feeling somewhat normal, however I have a lot of numbness and discomfort in my right breast from the invasion and nerve damage. I have prescription lidocaine patches that I use regularly to help with this, but I was told it could take months, years, or maybe even never to get the feeling back. The only thing I feel is numbness and tenderness, and sometimes discomfort from what feels like nerves trying to repair. Hopefully it's just going to take more time and I think it's normal if you've had any sort of nerve and muscle cut.

Diane Capece I had surgery on August 2nd for a mitral and tricuspid valve repair. I still have some numbness and tenderness on both sides of my incision in my chest. My Doctor said it may take up to 6 months to improve and sometimes if it is not totally better after 6 months it may always be a little numb. But I guess a little numbness is better than having bad valves. Hope you feel better soon.

I am almost 1 month post op and just the last week or two I have been feeling very sleepy, just wondering if anyone else ever felt that way? It is not my medications because nothing has changed about them. I have been sleeping at least 6-8 hours a night the last couple of weeks. I check my blood pressure every time I use my spirometer which is 7-9 times a day and when I use my spirometer I inhale and exhale 15 to 25 times usually 25 my reason for doing it so many times is I feel like if 10 is good 25 is even better. Anyway the tiredness is real I am even closing my eyes trying to fall asleep as I am writing this. I have only got to go to rehab 3 times and that was spread out due to Doctor and Surgeon follow ups and now holiday. I want to get full weeks in and I will get to soon could that be the problem I mean Zi know you are not Dr. But you have been through this sort of surgery just hoping someone will know something about it so I don't have to go back to Dr. Which interrupts my rehab. Thank you all for your time and God bless each and everyone on this website.

Ed Miskovic Seven months after aortic valve replacement surgery, I still get sleepy and fall asleep when watching TV. In month four, when I talked with my cardiologist about this problem he changed my meds. This helped. Also I had, in the 2nd month, talked to my sleep doctor, and he adjusted my sleep apnea machine, and this helped a little. My tiredness problem is improving as I exercise to gain stamina. Cardiac rehab helps do that for me. I also see a Health Psychologist who helps me work thru depression and anxiety related to the open heart surgery experience. I find that when I don't spend my energy fighting depression, I having more and more energy to do the things I want to do. Be patient with yourself. Measure your progress in gentle ways. These are some of the things I tell myself. Thanks for sharing and for asking us to share with you.

Barbara Laurie Sweetie! You wrote for the last one or two weeks you've been sleepy. That means post op, two to three weeks you are tired and need sleep. Yay😄❤️ There's nothing wrong, you're just barely out of OHS, and your body is healing, so you WILL need extra sleep. I've been on this site for 7 months, and haven't heard anything different from folks..you need sleep to heal. So, a cup of tea and a nice nap seems to be in order😉💕 sweet dreams and lots of healing❤️

Do you find you feel tired after rehab? I know when I was feeling sleepy, dosing off (still do 6 months post-op) blood tests revealed I was low on iron which is common after major surgery, have you had your levels checked including your red blood cells etc? Certain meds can also sometimes contribute to tiredness, notably betablockers...

My first surgery was done the same way. It will get better. Trust me. The folks at Cardiac Rehab will take good care of you. Let them know your concerns. I too was off and on w/ sleep - afraid to roll on my right side because of the incision. We had a manual recliner that sort of helped and a wedge pillow for the bed. If you don't have one, can get one at Bed, Bath and Beyond. For my surgery on Monday, I now have a remote lift chair. Hardest thing to do is to get in and out of chairs, beds, etc. Every day will get a little bit better. Hang in there. My thoughts are with you!

David C Terry, it was two or three weeks out that I started to get weird muscular pains in my shoulders and back. Elaine is right. The body is sorting things out for weeks to get to a new normal. For instance, I had no idea our aorta plays any role in temperature and BP, but I found out after surgery that the aorta itself [mine is now with a heavy percentage of dacron™] is part of the system that regulates this stuff. New normals all over. I think the long duration of our surgeries with us not moving, and the strain on our upper body muscles causes some real weirdness in the shoulders and back. Keep an eye on that numbness, though.

Did anyone here ever smoke cigarettes, I am embarrassed to admit that I smoked for about 30 years, I quit 5 years ago then my son who was a First Class Petty Officer in the US Navy, a follower of Christ, had a great relationship with God, and loved his Country was murdered. I immediately bought a pack of cigarettes and preceded to smoke one right after another, I have been in great emotional pain ever since that day. My surgery is 19 days away, when I found out I had to have OHS I knew I had to quit but it was harder this time around so I bought a vapor and slowly reduced the nicotine used in these smokeless vapors. I am so ashamed of myself that I was not able to throw them in the trash especially after hearing about my heart and knowing my life is on the line it is totally insane. I quit the vaporing yesterday but am having a hard time, I thought maybe if I shared this I might get some helpful feedback. I am so thankful for this wonderful website and all of you that take the time to share your story so those of us who are fixing to have OHS know what to expect. I used to smoke. Age 12- 42. Now 65. Weened self down to lowest tar and nicotine. Made a deal with my Dr. I would quite because did not want to wear oxygen tanks. Had already quit drinking 11 years before. Age 12-31. You can do this. Basically the truth- cigarettes are poisonous for you. I had to use visualization of the skull and cross bone on every bit of alcohol (had alcoholic toxic poisioning) I wanted to drink and every cigarette I wanted to smoke. Both were killing me. I wanted to live more than die. Terry you have not come this far. You got a whole lot more of living to do and your body needs for you to be heart ready! Perhaps a temporary patch would help. I wore one for a week only/ cause it was stronger that the weaning down. Good luck and keep on writing. All the best and prayers be with you. May Gods Blessings and Light surround you.

Peggy Whitecotton They are considered elective surgeries unless it has to be done as an emergency and they have priority. In fact my surgery was cancelled 18 hours before it was scheduled due to the fact mine was an elective and they had to do an emergency surgery. Yet I was told I was living with a death sentence without the operation but it was still elective until reaches an emergency situation which you don't want to happen because your risks are so much higher. It's only a hospital term so they can cancel you if needed. Seriously, they made it sound like you are going in for a face lift..your insurance should still pay for it because it is a needed surgery to save your life.

Maureen Breault They call it elective but not in the sense like plastic surgery!! Peggy is right, yiu can be bumped for an emergency but the chances are probably slim if you schedule far out. Of course you need it to prolong your life, scheudking helps you prepare. I know I felt like a huge weight had lifted from me knowing my date; I got my life in order, informed people and prepared myself mentally.

Peggy Whitecotton My Surgery was actually canceled twice. The first one was canceled but the date was moved back two weeks sooner Then less then 14 hours before I was to have surgery They canceled again for an emergency they had to do..I was getting panicky my heart valve already gone from severe to critical in a few weeks and no longer was functioning so the heart had enlarged trying to push the blood through a valve that was closed off. My family had flew in to be with me but after surgery was canceled some of my family had to go home.
Terry Gillen Thanks everyone and God bless you all.

Phyllis Petersen This thread has made me a little nervous, since I'm going quite a distance to have the surgery. The hotel, thankfully, has a very liberal cancellation policy for patient (it's on the campus of the Cleveland Clinic). Airlines are another story. I'll just keep positive energy going out into the ether!

Left the hospital with good news, my Cardiologist told me he thinks they can fix my valve without having to replace it. Now ha said he needed to do a Heart Cath, I think that is where he goes through the groin to check for blood clots before surgery, ouch!!!!! Anyway he said the surgeon would be calling me to set up a date for surgery. He told me I could go on and visit my grandchildren in Ok. I live in Elgin Texas near Austin. Just wondering if they do the groin test right before surgery usually, he did say it would be about 2 weeks before OHS. Also did anyone else go to visit family before your surgery?

Denise Campbell Hi terry. I had the cath too. Yes it is very common. They are checking the rest of you heart and arteries. They may also to a TEE. They also try to go through your wrist instead. They will prep your groin area in case they can't go thru wrist. I had the wrist. They will put you under. You won't remember a thing. And I had no problems.

Nap Garcia I had a tee as well and will go through a repair instead of a replacement, but I refused to do the heart cath, as my cardiologist was pressing hard for me to get it done but my surgeon said it may not be necessary in my case, so I opted for the surgeon's advice. I understand the sense it makes to get it done but I know if it was deemed not necessary by my insurance afterwards, I'll get stuck with the bill for it. I know cost shouldn't factor into it but I also don't want to deal with an invasive procedure just to check if I have any other artery blockage when I haven't had any chest pressure, pains, or other symptoms indicating potentially blocked arteries. I hope all goes well with your procedure.
Terry Gillen Thank you Nap, I hope your procedure goes well also, God bless you and have a great day.
Terry Gillen Thank you all for your kind words and knowledge, God bless you each and everyone.

Just found out my heart valves are leaking blood, I also have a vein or artery that is drooping and has a bulge. Going to the Heart Hospital this Weds. so my Dr. Can put a camera down my throat to get a better look at my heart and surrounding area. During my wellness exams this year they found something wrong on everyone, high liver enzymes slight swelling of my liver, was told I was pre diabetic etc etc. I am sixty now, really I am glad they found this maybe we caught it early enough that I will be able to resume a normal lifestyle, one way better then the one I had, these test results scared me back into reality. I had been going crazy with sugar that is mostly all I ate, embarrassed to say but it is the truth, I can eat a whole lemon meringue graham cracker crust pie throughout one day. I know really nothing about what I am facing here I have googled it and read where they can replace my valve with a metal one, that one I would not like to have at all from what I read. I really did not understand the other ones. I just wish they could close up mine, don't even know if that is possible.
