It's been a couple months since I've been on, and to just update what has been going on with regards to my previous, I got to see my cardiologist and he was very thorough and put me at ease it seems that all of my symptoms are being caused by my new job and the overwhelming duties that I have had to endure and cause a lot of stress in my life but it is getting better slowly!!!
I am currently waiting for surgery to have my wires removed from my sternum as they are causing lots of grief I even have one wire I can play with and kind and f move around, I am having some trouble with reaction to the metal so we decided to go ahead and remove them rather than keep having the issues I am having, not sure if any of you have had this procedure done but would love any info you have to offer
On the plus side it's almost 2 years since I received my mechanical valve and am overall doing great!!

Hi Terri, I too, encourage you to get it checked out and not wait until the end of January. Your symptoms are new right? My doctors remind me, that if there are any new symptoms, than I need to act. Sometimes, that has meant going to the ER which I don't like to do. But as one doctor in the ER told me, they'd rather you come in for a check than to wait when it's more difficult for them to help. (I'm on the other coast so I know about the wait times in Canada.) Good luck and keep us posted.

Briana Morgan I agree, definitely go get checked out. I would be concerned about those palpitations and dizziness. Do you have a primary care physician you can get a same day appointment with? I couldn't get I to my cardiologist today, so I saw my PCP. Definitely worth it to follow-up with someone. Your PCP or urgent care then can make a recommendation to follow up with your cardiologist immediately. Most likely they will squeeze you in then.

Don't assume that because "they are the dr and know more than I" is enough for them to make a decision (when to see you) based on what they know. It sounds like they don't have enough information and therefore, you have been given an appointment at the end of January. Does your family doctor know you are having episodes that you described here? Also, did he/she listen to your heart when you were at your last appointment? And yes, you might be in A-fib - it's an "irregularly irregular" heart beat and you can easily check your own pulse. As my wise mother used to say "The squeaky wheel gets the oil."

I just wanted to update on my surgery, I have completed my cardiac rehab and have made many new friends through my class they have also become a support group during the journey but now that rehab has finished I feel a little lost, I keep in contact with one of my classmates which is great and we all plan on getting together next summer as a reunion and see how each of us is doing.
I still have anxiety from my surgery, although I try to hide it but sometimes my emotions get the best of me but each day it does get better as I am now used to hearing my beating ticker from my valve.
My sternum is slowly getting better but still have a very sensitive spot where my doctor thinks that I may have a wire sticking up...
My cardiologist did a stress test on me and I was at 11 METS which I guess is really good....I just live my life as a happy day each and every day now, although stress is an everyday part of life I try to follow the rules of Dr Robert Elliott "don't sweat the small stuff" have a cool reaction and not a hot reaction.
I also would like to wish each and everyone of you a very merry Christmas as we are in the home stretch of the Christmas day....
Robert Osmachenko That's great Terri!! Best of the season to you and your family.

Please know, I experienced all the feelings you have described as well. It's difficult, but it helps to express your feelings! My aortic valve was replaced with a bovine valve, as I am in the age bracket where it can last longer than if I was a younger person. Just take one day at a time. Be patient with yourself. I understand the frustration. I have also put on 15lbs since my surgery. In 2016, I plan to take it off and then some. Also know that every one heals differently, and at their own pace. So don't be hard on yourself! I hope that you continue to recover quicker than ever. I wish you all the best in your healing process....one day at a time. All we have is NOW!

I am feeling pretty great for the most and finally getting the INR stabilized....I still seem to have some issues with the sternum healing I went to my family doctor and requested a chest x-ray but he doesn't want to seem to send me for one, I would like this for my own peace of mind because I have a sore spot at the top of my sternum and it is very sensitive and when I asked my doctor about it he said that it felt like a stitch sticking out, in my mind I would like to know for sure, the other issue I seem to have is that it feels like my heart hurts sometimes when I take deep breaths... Does anyone else have any of these kinds of issues that have had a mechanical valve put in?

I can't believe how much of a difference just a few days make, on Friday I felt I was still struggling to feel normal and get out walking a long distance I also was still struggling with some nausea which I believe was from the metoprolol or lack of sleep because I was lucky to be sleeping for 4 hours a night so my family physician suggested that I start taking a gravol in the evening and it may help with the nausea that I was waking up with and I may get some added sleep from it, so that's what I did and low and behold I have been getting about 7 hours sleep now and the nausea has finally subsided....My INR numbers were also high on Friday 4.4 way too high so I had to skip a day of coumadin and then continue taking 6mg a day until I went back today...My numbers today were 2.8 so we are getting closer to the 3.0 mark so today I took 7mg and then I will go back to 6mg the rest of the week and be tested again Friday....
These past couple days I can't believe how much better I feel and how much better I am getting around however getting out of bed in the morning still feels quite sore but all in time right!!!!

Hey Everyone,
sorry for the late posts after surgery...My surgery was a success and I had a St Judes Mechanical Valve replacement and also a Maze procedure....I am not going to lie I felt like I was hit by a truck after my surgery to the point that I had to send my family home the day following because I just was not up to any visitors because I was very ill from the Morphine and anesthetic but after I got out of the SICU and the Step down Unit in to my own room I started to feel much better however still today I am having lots of pain at my incision and chest area....I keep trying to tell myself that it's just recovery but I have to admit I am always thinking something is wrong does anyone else have this same feeling or this same pain any advice would be great?
I am still having a battle with the warfarin and trying to get my levels straight but I seem to go from one extreme to the next...because of this type of valve they said my INR levels need to be between 3.0 -3.5 but after I was released from the hospital after my surgery I had to be admitted again because my levels dropped to 1.7 and they were concerned that I would form a blood clot on the valve itself and I had to be put on heparin and stayed 3 days in hospital....
I always seems to feel scared that something is going to be wrong because it always seems to happen that way for me and I try to stay as positive as possible but it's hard....
I feel like my collar bone hurts badly but they keep telling me that it's just my muscles healing and because of my age it is going to hurt more than someone who is elderly... I just want to recover and not be sore and be normal again...Is anyone else feeling the same way as me?

Ericka Carlson Terri, I am 5 weeks this coming Tues and I feel EXACTLY the same way! My chest just aches, it was shooting down my arms today, and I keep thinking "What is wrong with me??" I had horrible pain out of surgery too, and it seems like no one has been able to offer something that will help keep it under control. I had to stop taking the narcotics a week after coming home because they were making me so sick. The nurses and docs just said "You skinny ones always have more pain." Not very helpful. :( I wish I had some suggestions except to try either heat or ice, one or the other seems to help on the really bad days. I am so sorry you are going through this.
I also am having trouble getting to the right level with the Warfarin, but I got a tissue valve so I only have another 2 months of that to deal with.
Sending you my best, hugs and positive energy!

Terrie Syvertsen Hello Terri- Sorry you are down but it is understandable having your date put off as we all know that the waiting isn't doing anything but adding to the stress load. If you look at my Aug. 20th. journal page you will find that I got to "sitting in" the motel with my husband 2 blocks from the hospital and phoned 30 minutes prior to entering for surgery, medicinal showers done and ready to go" Temporarily "Bumped" and then told to come in two hours later.". We all have our stories leading up to getting into our "gurney" and pushed down the hall for surgery and most of them are
the same------Waiting....Waiting But then, finally it is your turn to get through those double doors and the damnest thing happens to a lot of us.
Peace/Calm/Confidence/deep breaths as the surgical room rolls into view and then.....you are out. You are awake. If you are like me it is with an
amazed feeling of.......I'm Awake.....I'm Alive! My God it is over. No more
waiting. I am hoping that your date "sticks" and you too can get in and
out and back to your life. I have been reading your posts and I really believe you are one of the ones who's attitude is going to go well for you in your recovery and healing process!
Terrie to Terri(sorry, couldn't help but throw that in as there are 3 of us or more in the community now) I want to tell you as frustrating as it is to wait, something in this Universe is making sure that you get in at the very time it is meant to get done. So save up on your strength, stay positive as things move forward and look forward to all of the things you get to share with others about how great you are doing pretty soon! Everything is going to be good soon.

My cardiologist didn't seem too concerned, but did have me carry around some nitro tabs in an abundance of caution (I had blockage in an artery among other things). A lot of people, including myself, focus(ed) on everything that was going on with their hearts once learning of their conditions and need for surgery. Anyway, I thought is was important to let the cardiologist know.

Terri Henwood I was speaking with my family doctor and he has told me he bought one to have in his office to have so that results can be given immediately and any adjustments for medication can be done then and there.
I did find out that it is not covered by insurance in Canada so I would be looking at a lot of money and I was also talking to one and they told me company that they don't deliver or set up for Canada so my research will continue.

Today I made myself a dentist appointment and got in quickly (tomorrow) I have to take antibiotics for the appointment because another thing I learned from my surgeon was that the bacteria in the back of your mouth is much like the bacteria that caused the rheumatic valve disease and Oral care is a major thing after having this surgery so the surgeon suggested I have a cleaning if I hadn't had them done in the past 3 months....So prepping begins my journey... :)

Wiliam Height Yes it is and over the years there has been much conflicting info whether to pre-med or not. Dentists are of the belief and will tell you you is no longer necessary. But for us, it is absolutely necessary everytime--I'm even nervous thinking about the first time back postop even with premed. From my understanding dental work and urinary tract exams require premed, oddly colonoscopy does not.
Jim Kelly-Evans Anyone with a replacement valve must pre-medicate for dental work and certain other procedures.

Nancy D I am just now 6 months post replacement, and they said to wait at LEAST 6 months for routine dental cleaning and yes pre-med now is always indicated. I am reluctant at this point to go, but will eventually go for a cleaning, and pray nothing urgent arises. The dentist isn't my favorite health maintenance appointment to go to for sure.... How long were the rest of you told to wait past valve replacements???

Pat Bluemel I was told I can go whenever now, but pre med is required. I get my teeth cleaned three times a year already, so I am set with the advice of my Cardiologist which was to take PRISTINE care of my teeth from this point on to avoid bacteria settling on my valve.

Terri Henwood The dentist isn't my favorite either I am so nervous going back the last time I was there I had to have a filling re done and he put the freezing in and came back but it wasn't frozen and then he put more in and became tingly and we thought it was frozen until he started drilling and OMG I felt like I was being electrocuted but he wouldn't stop he kept drilling and I have had a fear ever since to go back, so today should be interesting however it's just a cleaning but my teeth are always sensitive...My surgeon told me the same thing I need to keep my teeth pristine as well and I always have had regular check ups until that happened but always still took great care of my teeth.

Today I met with my surgeon and it has helped me a lot and he has answered all of my questions that I needed answering to help me understand.
My surgery will be within the next 4-6 weeks I will get a call the week prior and will be admitted the day before my surgery.
Dr Forgie explained to me all of my options and we felt it best that I go with the mechanical valve as oppose to the tissue one due to my age and he said I would be looking at a second surgery with the tissue valve after about 10 years and I only want to go through this once, the only down fall is that I will no longer be able to return to Roller Derby after I recover from the surgery which makes me very sad but my health is more important.
We talked about being able to go through my ribs for the surgery but because my lung pressure is currently double what it should be and the chance that I could also end up with broken ribs and if there were to be any complications they would have to go through the breast bone anyway, so with that said I opted to go with them doing it through the breast bone because I rarely have anything go straight forward and any surgery I have ever had has lead to some kind of complication I think it would be safer to do it this way the first time and then any complications could be addressed while they can see everything wide open.
The Dr told me I have had this condition (Rheumatic Valve Disease) for many years my aortic valve is dilated double what it should be and the mitral valve leaflets are just not working properly and because of the two issues they can't be repaired and the Mitral needs to be replaced because of the stenosis and regurgitation, which is causing the pressure of my lungs double the normal as well, it is very scary in this position but I have to be positive that it will be resolved shortly and I will be a healthy 44 year old again...I just will have to figure out some new sports that I can enjoy that isn't a contact sport....So now I wait for that call to say "next week is your surgery"

Lewis Garlisi Terri, I found browsing through this website to be very helpful during my times of pre-op panic. It does get more "real" with each passing day and appointment, but this is something you are doing for yourself that will ultimately extend and improve your life. Ask your surgeon a lot of questions. Concentrate on your recovery. Best wishes.

Cheryl Batzing Terri and Janine, I had my mitral valve replaced on Dec. 16 and am about 10 weeks post op. I'm mostly doing well. Agreed that reading on this site and asking questions and posting concerns is very helpful! And talking to others that have gone before you and can help you know what to expect takes some of the fear out of the unknown, or what to ask for, or to do. Please ask questions...and read people's journeys! Prayers dear Terri & Janine!
