Richard Munson  You need to make friends with a moose, and cuddle on the couch. Do the words florida sound good. I was crabby here in good old taxachusetts by waking up at 32 degees f. I may just put my speedo on and head outside for a little sun. 

Brady Busch  Greg,the Fahrenheit equivalent to -41c is almost the same,at -41.8.Probably should park the truck inside the garage.  

Richard Munson  I think the heart surgery for dummies book says no 100 pound lifting. Unless its shaped like a moose. Next week is my annual echo to check my valve and aneurism. Just had my lasered right eye tested and its 20/20. Now i can get left eye done. Even drove my car today. No snow yet, so no salt. Yea.

Brady Busch  Richard,I'd like to read that book.
By the way,if salt causing corrosion is a concern,there was an article that mentioned,that it happens above freezing.Like when a car is driven and then brought into a +32F garage overnight,the process starts.If left outside and temps are below freezing,then no problem.

Greg Lewis  Richard, I so hope that your echo results are favorable!! We got more snow today, and tomorrow, and then supposed to see -37c ! 🥶  but it's been a pretty nice winter so far.  I saw a video of a guy that tried to pet a moose. I stopped watching the stomping when he snapped the guys leg like a toothpick! Most people don't know just how big and mean those things can be! Cheers!

Greg Lewis  Brady, salt and corrosion are definitely a concern here. Maybe better to leave my truck out of the garage during the winter?

Kimberly Eisenhut  Sorry you have this to deal with . My 18 year old has had tinnitis since he was a child and it is quite annoying according to him. Nice to see you keeping your sense of humor about it all :)

Richard Munson  Love those ears. Sisters i assume. So you brought 2 more women into your life. Glutton  for punishment comes to mind.

Greg Lewis  Yep..sisters. they are Wauzers. Sophie is not scared of a thing, and rips right in to see what's happening.  Gracie hangs back, and if Sophie doesn't explode, then she joins her!

Greg Lewis  They are supposed to be around 15 to 20 lbs. They are a hybrid between miniature schnauzer and west highland terrier.

Rose Madura  Good post!  I laughed about know more about the heart. My sister-in-law says that my husband and I sound like doctors when talking about my heart!

Deena Z  Nicely said, Greg.  Might want to share your empathic words with some cardiologists to use right after they tell their patients that "now is the time".

Greg Lewis  Hi Barbara! It's scary, no doubt. But, you don't go through any of it alone. There are doctors, nurses, anesthesiologists, more nurses, xray people, still more nurses, physiotherapists, therapists, (did i mention nurses?) family, friends,  good drugs (lol) 
You are not even close to alone in this, and they do all the work. So try to take it one day at a time. Your gonna be great!!

Jill Porter  This was very helpful. Thank you! I am in that worry phase. I have my appt with my surgeon soon and I worry that things are not moving quickly enough. That my heart is being damaged by all this waiting. I will try to trust as you said.

Greg Lewis  Hi Jill!  I had the exact same worry!  "I checked with my wife, and she nodded" lol
But we can't make it go any faster. I don't have my own private OR and surgical team. (Wouldn't that be cool!) So we just have to try to transfer the worry into hope, I guess. Then go mow the lawn.   😁

Rose Madura  Great post. Worry accomplishes nothing but let's face it. We all do worry at some point or another.  Another mantra of mine is worry is the opposite of faith.  

STEPHEN MORRIS  "This shit ain't easy" ..that's for sure..a week can seem like a lifetime. I was healthy and active..within days ..fighting to survive...then walking with a walker...progress seems slow...I can say..it probably took over a year to feel "normal" again...maybe it was the new "normal", the human body and spirit is amazing. I am back to playing hockey...but I still hate jogging..lol

Richard Munson  Greg, great to hear things are well. Sorry you only have deer and not meese ( plural for moose).  Will try not to “ horn in” on the rest of your summer. 

Klara Čičić  Great, great to hear from you, we missed you!! You are cycling! Me, too, at 9 months post-op. Isn't it great? I am sorry for your pains... Did you ever see reumatologst? I hope it will get better... I always imagined deer as lovely and timid animals :) 

Robert Miller  @Greg, I am glad you are recovering well after all you went through. I have to admit that I was one of the people that recovered very quickly both times. But you can overdo it easily. For many, the body won't stop them from doing unreasonable things just 2-4 weeks after surgery. Listen to your surgeon and take it easy the first couple of months. 

@Richard, are you pulling our legs? Or the plural for moose is meese up in Canada...??? Never heard of that...

Wendell Scott  Greg, I'm one month out from my Bicuspid Aortic Valve replacement (OHS).   I'm walking 3x/day for 25 minutes.   Curious how long it took you to get back on the bike and if you used an indoor trainer?   If I've mis-read your profile, forgive me, but I'm looking for any input on how soon I can get back to regular activities.

Everyone's recovery is different,  sounds like you are doing well. In Canada they send you to cardiac rehab...which is walking and excercise plus information on diet etc. I was 6 months before I went back to work as a firefighter. I was always thinking why is this taking so long and others were saying...geez you are doing so well for what happened. Keep up the excercise and it will pay off.

Greg Lewis  Hi Wendell. It's taken 2 years to rebuild most of me. I started with lifting 1 pound. Now I can bike again! I have been in the gym for about 1.5 years working on it. I don't think I will ever be the same. And that's just fine. Happy to be here. That's what matters! Physical fitness is not the measure here.  It's nice, but not a must have. Enjoy life! Whatever that is for you.   Keep it up man!! You will recover!

Amy Berger  Thanks for sharing your perspective - this is such an awesome group of diversified people and experiences! I shared a personal victory yesterday about being able to walk about 4 miles a day two months after my Avr. I’ve never been athletic and am quite surprised this is possible. I don’t enjoy athletics and am only doing the walking because it’s what my cardiologist encouraged me to do. I totally agree that comparison of recovery with someone  else is not the goal, but isn’t it great to have all kinds of examples to relate to :)

Brady Busch  For us,the operation could be the easy part.It's the recovery and healing,that may be painful and difficult.I remember,when staying for awhile,in a house that was getting renovated.Talking to one of the carpenters,he commented that it's going to look bad before looking good.Surgery is not a pretty thing,but after everything comes together,there is a change for the better.

Greg Lewis  Amy, four miles! That's awesome 👌.  I can't get there yet, but I will. Most muscles are getting back, but the ankles are gonna take more work yet.

Ana Brusso  So true Greg and Richard and Brady. We recover at our own pace. Not all of us get to go to cardiac rehab or have an exercise routine etc., but we go about life the best way we can. God always helps us if we ask faithfully and if it’s his plan. Never give up.

Susan Lynn  Good observations! We're here to share, not compare! Everyone takes their own path and everything happens on each heart warrior's individual timetable. Everyone will get to their destination, some may simply take a different route. Excellent reminder!

Patsy Stewart  So tue, Greg! I love reading about all of the successful recoveries and see all of the smiles, but there are those whose recoveries aren't all smiles and roses. I wish I felt more freely to share how my recovery is actually going, but I always hold my tongue a bit. I know my problems stem from a combination of so many other conditions, so my recovery has definitely been different. I still have a lot of hope and I'm determined to get better. 

Greg Lewis  Patsy, i hear ya! Don't stop trying!..Do not stop trying!! ... I also don't share everything, don't want to scare people going to surgery. I would need a book. But what I am slowly learning is that our happiness is not a function of our physical capabilities. A successful recovery..is simply being alive and happy! I have to stop thinking about what I can no longer do. It does not deserve a thought. Anything physical, as we know, can be gone at the snap of your fingers. The more I spend my time and energy in the Lord, the more I enter into something with actual meaning and substance. It can never be taken away! Hang in there, Patsy! you can do it! Remember, you are already awesome! 

Richard Munson  Now is a good time to complain about hospital attire. Always hate it when they say, tie it in the back. Really? Is it just me but tying a bow in the back requires skills i don’t have. 

Richard Munson  Not to over complain but once the bow in the back turned out to be a knot and when the nurse left the room and said to get dressed i was trapped in a gown. I opened the examination room door to ask for help and there were about 10 people out there. Mortified when another patient offered to help

Greg Lewis  I hear ya man. I hate those gowns. They are a cruel joke. Should boycott them, and just run naked..free...lol

Brady Busch  That reminds me,when taking a walk out of the hospital room,I probably looked too scary from the back.So the nurse offered to put another gown on backwards,over the other one.She made an excuse,like it was cold in the hallways,but I knew better.

Grace Mason   Greg, great news about your FIL! I'm glad they have ruled out MS for your son. Hope he can get some answers soon.

Greg Lewis  We saw Diana's dad today. He's doing good. Surgery still planned for Sunday. Smuggled him in some jelly beans. He tore in to them pretty fast!! I showed him the posts from all of you, but had to stop, because it was making him cry. 
It is  amazing to us the care that all of you show, on this support group. He was pretty choked up. Thank you! 
He won't join here, only because he is not very tech savvy.

Greg Lewis  Thanks Adam!! Nice pic, Brody knew what he was doing!..This is an important month for warriors! ..For me. We counted 6 people in our family, who have, or have died from heart disease. My uncle dropped dead instantly at age 68. His son, same thing, also 68. My dad, brother, uncle, cousin, myself..all heart disease.  Maybe you could do a piece on the importance of family members getting checked for it? And the genetic component?

Greg Lewis  Thanks gang! I am sure it will be fixable. They check some organs today. Personally I think it's cartilage damage. 

Greg Lewis  This community is just so helpful at keeping spirits up! It can be quite disappointing when you hit a new hurdle, as most of you know. It means so much to talk to people who get it! But get a Machiatto, and shift to a different gear, and be happy to be alive!!

Deena Z  Greg, great story, talk about being blessed. And also some good genes. Researchers say that if you live to be 95 or over you most likely have "old age genes". -- also referred to as methusaleh genes, but not at age 969 as in the bible. My bet is that her parents also lived to be in their 90s. So, for her, yeah, age is but a number, because she is actually aging slower than the average human. #Envious.

I have two people dear to me who suffer from anxiety attacks and they are horrible for them to experience. The bible shows that Jesus came to deliver us from sin,because we are not able to do that ourselves.

 I began writing a response yesterday, but it was too difficult.

 My 17 year old son has severe anxiety, and panic also, on occassion. It runs in the family, as I myself have struggled my whole life as well as my other two children, all in similar ways. My son worries about being able to get a job because of his terrible anxiety, and it is so hard to watch him struggle with this, especially when I myself know how hard it can be. I agree that you just never know what someone is struggling with, and always to be kind, understandng and give Grace when needed. We have a difficult road ahead of us, as we will be needing to secure a new place to live in a few months also. The owner of the home I have been renting for years has not been paying the mortgage, and not sure what wil happen when bank owns the home again. Supposedly, my lease will be honered until June as per a Federal Law, but who knows? I am just so stressed and since rents are so crazy high now, it worries me we wont be able to find something I can afford. I just pray and hope for the best. 
Greg, my son did well Christmas Eve also, going to his older sisters house, but the next day had some panic, almost like the extra stimulus was too much maybe? The hardest part about being a parent is seeing your child, no matter how old, struggle. I am so glad your son was able to enjoy the Holiday. You are a good parent knowing and alowing your son to be who he is without feeling less than he is! Too many people just say, "toughen up" , or "stop being so sensitive". This is not in our control, so saying these things just makes it so much worse. My son tells me just talking to me when he is struggling brings him out of his anxiety/panic, and knowing I understand how he is feeling and he can tell me anything is better than any counselor hes ever talked to.
Thank you so much for sharing your post, it made me feel a little less alone in this.
Best wishes to everyone for the new year and any struggles or hardships you are going through, may they resolve, lessen and you be at peace. This is my hope also.
I am so very grateful for this site and the wonderful people willing to share and support each other.

Greg Lewis  Kimberly,  thankyou so much for the response. And I hope and prayed that your home situation will work out!  Adam has the exact same worries, with the job. Please let your son know that he is not alone. Adam found a job, but had to quit for awhile. He will look again, once his legs get better.

Greg Lewis  Richard, it will take more than a Moose to feed that mouth! Last time he was home he said it was good he was leaving, cause we were gonna starve him to death! Diana and I were like...what the heck!! 😂

Greg Lewis  Brady, Wow! Thanks for the interest! scrupulously is a type of OCD. He knows about Jesus, but the OCD makes him fear doing anything wrong. But not regular fear.. horrible, terrifying, fear. I have had 20 years to try to understand it, and he still enlightens me when I am not helping, or making it worse. It is just such a huge topic of discussion. Just want to Thank you for your caring! It's incredible. .. have a great New Year's!!

I know there is a difference in our sons conditions, but the intrusive thoughts are debilitating at times for both, as well as constantly questioning themselves about every little thing and feelings of not being what they should be, how they communicate, and how they act around others. My son calls himself "awkward" a lot. I say he is stronger and more in tuned than most people and that he is one in a million, so think of it this way; "You are more self aware and have an amazing mind that very few people will ever know and that makes you even more invaluable, interesting and loved than most." "Normal" is a word that just does not exist in my household because it is just too broad and really has no meaning as far as living in this world. It's funny how my mind has adapted to thinking about so many things differently and turned that light on that lets you never judge another human being until you really know them and give them grace. We all have our own stories to tell. and they are all encredible, beautiful, sometimes painful, but they are ours, and I hope and pray more will catch on and show more compassion, love and understanding for us all.

Greg Lewis  Well said, Kimberly!  "Normal" is a fictitious word. It's a Good thing too. It would be a very boring world if we were all the same!

Greg and Kimberly, thank you taking the risk that HVS is a safe place to share. It is hard to imagine walking in another's shoes, but it helps to try.

Wish there was something more helpful to say or do. The one thought to share is that maybe your children could find jobs that let them work at home all the time and not have the added stress of offices. In the mean time, you and your families are in my prayers; blessings your way in 2023.

Brady Busch  Merry Christmas,I like to grow fruit and took a motorcycle trip,2-3 years ago,from Seattle to near Calgary,at Okotoks.A place called the Saskatoon Farm.It has rows of yes,Saskatoons,only I call them Serviceberries.Bush Cherries too and some Figs in greenhouses.Good trip most of the way,when it didn't rain.

Greg Lewis  Richard, Clark would have loved those trips! Eddie too!! Our family may have resembled them sometimes!! 😂

Brady Busch  Serviceberries are probably what I've heard mostly,except an old botany teacher referred to them as Sarvisberry and after looking it up,he was correct.
The story about the name,from a source or two,came from the eastern US.In the pre-industrial age and the ground froze in the Winter.They couldn't bury the dead.So,during the Spring,when warming awakened the plants,the Serviceberry,(probably had another name)was one of the first to bloom.People saw the many white blossoms,knew the ground could be worked and it was time for a funeral service.
Here's some more names,if that one is a little too odd.Shadbush, shadwood, shadblow,  sarvisberry, sarvis, wild pear, juneberry, saskatoon, sugarplum, wild-plum, and chuckley pear.

Thomas Brusstar  We have visited Alberta, and I want to return to ski.  We visited the area around Banff one September, plus a visit to Drumheller for dino stuff.  I love it up there!

Greg Lewis  Anne, He does!! And he sent me a video of it, on Whatsapp, from Brazil, but I need a photo. It's beautiful!! And Richard...it has a Moose tree topper..lol

Richard Munson  I like that greg. We decided to opt out on a tree this year as our not so little furry friend seems to get into things he should not. Many moons ago our family friend decided the water in the tree stand was fair game. It was ugly. Lucky his insides never froze up from the sap. He was hog tied with xmas lights. 

Greg Lewis  No,no,no, Richard! 🙄 they swim to Cuba, then to the Bahamas, then up to Florida, then buses back to Sunny Alberta, and boom!!  Bobs your uncle!

Greg Lewis  Thanks, Susan. My wife and i would be just this really old couple, all hunched over, with our old, dusty, stuffed dog! My wife would just sit in the rocking chair petting, him. Dust clouds rising up, as she stares, mindlessly, out the window!  I can see it now! 😁

Greg Lewis  Richard, you ever hear the rumor that Fidel was fooling around with ole Margaret Trudeu? They say that, our fearless leader, Justin Trudeu, is the spittin image of Fidel. So, of course the rumor is that he was a little Fidel! Who knows! Seems to have the same political leanings! 😂
