less than a week before my surgery and I still can't make up my mind (if the repair goes wrong) whether to get bioprosthetic or mechanical valve

The answer will come to you. I made a "pros / cons list" to help guide my choice of valve and procedure. I talked it over with my family and didn't look back. At some point, you need to leap. My thoughts are with you!

Richard - an extremely high percentage of mitral valves are repaired. My surgeon didn't even ask me about a preference. You may want to ask your surgeon what percentage of repairs he does. Prayers you find your answer and Peace with it. Prayers that the repair will go just fine and a replacement won't even be needed.

so I finally decided on the doctor, Dr Lewis in Birmingham, on 4/30. I saw him few weeks ago so he can judge whether robotic procedure would be even possible. In his own terms "it will be a challenge" but he and his surgical assistant think they can do it.... Read more.

Are there any limits for roboticaly assisted surgery as far as body size goes? I'm 6'6", 385lbs, built like a football linesman. (enjoying brewed carbonated beverage of some kind, I lost few lbs since the picture was taken)

Richard - I don't think there are restrictions, but your surgeon can more specifically advise you. I had minimally invasive mitral valve repair and highly recommend it if it's an option for you Best of luck!

I understand there are surgeons who specialize in OHS on larger folks. If I'm not mistaken, there is one at Duke.
