Catie B Nancy, I'm sorry you're having pain! Hope you feel much better soon. I had a pleural effusion that they drained in the hospital--the needle went in what felt like the lower back and I did experience some pain in that area for a few days. My effusions lingered several months, but my pain was earlier, in several directions with breathing in. Maybe up to the three or four week mark. I don't remember hurting after that.

Special thanks to Barbara and Tom Cochran for letting my folks crash at their house in Spokane for a week, and for housing Sam and me while we were there to support them.
Also, a BIG thank you to Providence Heart Institute, Dr. Siwek, and the host of nurses, RNs, anesthesiologists, and techs who took such great care of my mom. They have a lot of people in their world to take care of, but they took amazing care of my mom, who is my world.
Way to go, Momma! Now take it easy, get home, rest, and make Dad cook all your favorites. Me, Nathan, Connor, Norah, Leila and Aiden love our Nana!

Hello all, this is Caroline, Nancy’s daughter. Mom is out of surgery and in recovery. The doctor said he had to replace more of the root (?) than originally planned in order to make everything fit correctly. But it was a hugely successful surgery. She is still under the effects of the anesthesia and isn’t expected to be lucid until the morning. Mom did great, doc did great, and the rest of us lost feeling in our rears from sitting in the waiting room all day.
Thank you so much for all the kind words, the prayers, the happy thoughts, the good vibes, and the generous support. My mother looked to this forum for hope and positivity throughout this ordeal and your stories and advice helped her keep her spirits up.
Thank you,
Caroline, Sam (son), and Carl (husband)

I had a bit of a setback today. The surgeon told me that my aortic valve may be to small for a straight valve replacement. He thinks I will need a a valve and root replacement. When I was in the hospital after about day 4 they suggest I wear a bra and provided me with one. It is a soft cotton and easy to put on and has Velcro closure in the front.
Hope this helps.

Meredith Bray i found that hot & humid weather really wore me down quickly. I could walk the mall at a moderate pace for hours, but one walk across a hot parking lot and I needed to rest. I wasn't gasping for breath, just so tired. The last few months before my surgery I would have to nap during my lunch hour, and I would still get home and fall asleep in 10 minutes. A few times I dozed in my car in the driveway. You're not imagining things, and after surgery you'll look back and think, "Hey, I was really tired!"

Meredith Bray I felt terrific in the pool before surgery. I could stretch and swim...or just lay on a noodle and float. I wasn't and still am not an exerciser (not that I don't need to...). My Cardologist & Surgeon both suggest I remain as active as possible because the better I felt going in to surgery, the better I would feel after surgery. I did wear a heartrate monitor a few times just out of curiosity. And every time I felt uncomfortable and checked my heartrate, I was over 120. I still like to swim - it was one of hte activities I was really looking forward to resuming after surgery (have to wait for all the wounds to heal & scabs to fall off though, I think it was weeks for me.)

Mark Wilbur Nancy, my symptoms are what you described, with the exception that I now feel increasingly out of breath. We live on a hillside and I am much more aware of my breathing when I walk outside, or when I climb the stairs indoors. No pain, but increased tiredness and usually a nap by later in the afternoon, regardless of how well I slept the night before. My cardiologist told me to keep my heart rate below a certain level. I wear a chest strap heart rate monitor for an accurate reading when I am exercising, including mowing the lawn, stopping occasionally when the rate gets too high. I used to say that I was asymptomatic, but I realize that the symptoms progressed so slowly that I wasn't aware of them until recently.

My cardiologist just said come back in 6 months with no warnings or things to look out for. I think I will call Duke next week and see if I can get an appointment. Marie Myers Yes. I had my AVR, aortic root, and ascending aortic aneurysm resected at a local hospital. I was way too overwhelmed by the idea of travel. Also, I am a CRNA (nurse anesthetist), and have worked in OR's for 40+ years in my area. So I knew who to talk to to find out the track records of the local surgeons. I was also lucky enough to have worked with one of the anesthesiologists years ago, who happened to work at a local hospital with a cardiac surgeon with a good track record. So I met with 2 local cardiac surgeons at 2 different hospitals, and then made my decision to have surgery done locally. Believe me, I talked to the OR nurses, the recovery room nurses, doctors, even the nursing administrators to check out the abilities of the surgeon locally. I was satisfied that he had excellent training and skills.
So my bottom line is that are excellent doctors everywhere, you just have to find them!
The valve I got was an Edwards LifeScience 3300, which I think is the MagnaEase. I really don't know much about the Intuity or Inspirius. Every surgeon has their favorites, and not every valve is available at every hospital. So you have to ask all these questions in order to feel confident in your decision.
Wishing you a smooth ride through surgery and recovery!

Mark Wilbur Welcome to the community, Nancy. Like you, I was diagnosed with aortic stenosis two years ago and was referred to a cardiologist who did his fellowship year at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York four years ago, before moving here to Oregon. At our last meeting, I asked him to compare the doctors and regional hospital that does cardiac surgery in our area to Mt. Sinai. He said that for a common procedure as heart valve replacement, the regional hospital and the doctors to whom he refers patients do as good a job as the major hospitals and that I can have confidence them. After that, I stopped wondering about all of the other options, although I had spent countless hours researching them. For us, traveling only 75 miles, rather than hundreds, for heart surgery is a relief, as well. Whatever your decision, you need to have that sense of confidence in the doctors and hospital that you choose. I haven't been referred for surgery yet, so I can't comment on valve selection. I wish you well on your journey. You came to the right place for information, opinions and support!
