I’m dealing with pericarditis which I didn’t see coming. It’s very painful and really knocks you out. It went away and I picked up my pace exercise wise and then it came back. As I mentioned in other posts I never saw this coming. Just thought I was on a straight path to healing. It’s hard to sleep or get comfortable so I’m also exhausted and definitely bummed. Has anyone else experienced this?
Peter Eglinton Sorry to hear about your current challenges. I hope you feel better soon. Sending healing thoughts.

Shannon Gray Hi Mara. I had a severe pericardial effusion one week after my surgery and then it came back as pericarditis about one month later. I am so sorry you are facing this... it hurts! And is scary. Please share how your drs are treating this? I was on Colchisine one for three months and had to taper off at the end for a few weeks... this medicine is one you can’t just go of and be done. Ask me any questions and hoping this will be resolved quickly for you.

Unfortunately I had recurrent 1.5 months later. Take care of yourself and forget about exercise until doctors confirm you are out of the woods.

Lise Bowles Hi Mara,
I had my surgery repair 3 years ago this August. This is the third bout of pericarditis I’ve had. Like you, I was on colchicine and meloxicam for three moths before and I haven’t had it for 16 months until about a week ago! I was hoping it was a thing of the past, unfortunately not! The most frustrating thing about it is I have no idea what I did that triggered it again. I know once I have it if I exercise it gets worse, but I hadn’t increased my exercise or done anything unusual before this! I really feel bad this time, the terrible feeling of being stabbed in my shoulder and chest went away after 3 days but I feel just all around sick. I could not go to my doc when it started because she was away, but I talked with her nurse practitioner and she wrote a script for the meds. I keep waiting for the meloxicam to take away the pain and the colchicine to help but at night it gets really painful. I have some hydrocodone and acetaminophen but I don’t want to take that to much because I don’t want to become dependent on it! Can I ask what you did for pain? It’s just taking those two meds forever. I go to my doc on Tuesday, Any feed back you can give me would be appreciated, ❤️Lise

At 5 weeks I suddenly did not feel well. It hurt to take deep breaths. Ended up in the closest emergency room Memorial Day weekend. They did a catscan and chest X-ray and found some fluid around my heart. Also my heart rate was high. I had caught a nasty chest cold from kids I’m sure that didn’t help. Some Advil and a lot of rest and I felt better. Now it’s a week later and I feel it on the other side. Also achy and tired again. A bit bummed because I thought my recovery was going so well! I guess it’s definitely an up and down process. Anyone else experience any of this?

Rose Madura Yes. I had fluid around my heart and had to have a second surgery about 2-1/2 weeks after my initial OHS to drain one liter of fluid. Full recovery takes time. Your body was majorly traumatized so everything inside is inflamed. Give it time and take good care of yourself. It's a journey to full recovery. God bless you and I hope you turn that corner soon!

mara katz I am still looking for answers it’s been a rough week. I now went to my internist for full blood testing. He gave me something for the tachycardia which is part of my issue. I also have been having serious night sweats. We are determined to figure this out it is painful and definitely sideswiped me. On a positive note I had an echo and to quote my cardiologist my mitral valve and heart look beautiful. Was so happy to hear and then started feeling like crap😳Test results come back next week. my healing process which went so well for 5 weeks turned into a bit of a roller coaster ride. Will keep you posted. Hopefully time will heal all of this!!

mara katz I am still dealing with the pericarditis. Not tachycardia. It’s very painful and makes me feel like I have the worst flu. I’m being treated for it and it’s gone and come back. Maybe I was doing too much. Has anyone else had this? It’s hard to sleep and get comfortable and then I’m exhausted from that as well. Was really ready to get on with things but for now I know I have to slow down.

Rose Madura I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I too had lots of issues (You can read my journals) but in the end, the doctors figured it out. Basically I had a lot of inflammation which caused fluid buildup on both heart and lungs. I didn't "turn a corner" to recovery until about 3 months after surgery. I am very symptomatic so any little set back was not little for me. Hang in there.

Had my preop checkup today and all is well. My heart looked strong and I don't have symptoms making it hard to accept that my surgery is in 2 weeks. I am having minimally invasive mitral valve repair on April 16th at NYU Langone. The waiting and overthinking is very stressful. I am ready to have this whole thing in the rear view mirror. Anyone have the minimally invasive surgery? How was the recovery?

leslie terjesen I was also totally asymptomatic before my OHS on 2/19. My doctor at home kept saying I'd feel better after the surgery, the just you wait and see, but i felt great then and I feel great now. But looking at the TEE and the cardiac cath numbers, knew it was severe and some people don't have symptoms. As my doctor at home and my doctor at Columbia NY Presbyterian said," You are ahead of the curve and in great health except your aortic valve." Both doctors said within so much time ahead I was looking at a heart attack, stroke, sudden death, etc. Had the surgery 2/19, had an easy time and an easy recup and just did my six week checkup Tuesday and can drive and started cardiac rehab yesterday. Still feel great but saw the numbers from all the tests and they don't lie. I was not a candidate for the TAVR and did see the doctors up in NY but after a CT Scan with dye of my heart, my annulus in my heart was not wide enough for the TAVR to go through but they were going to fix that during surgery in case I need a new valve years from now. It does not take long to get to the "other" side of this surgery. God bless .

Susan Lynn I had minimally invasive mitral valve repair. It's virtually painless, recovery was easy. The only post op symptom that lingered was exhaustion. I took short naps almost every day for several months. Walking - even around your house - is key to getting your stamina back.
You'll be fine - I was absolutely amazed that it was so much easier than I ever anticipated. Waiting was one hundred times worse than the surgery itself! You're going to do great!!! ❤

mara katz Susan I agree with you on most everything you said. I wouldn’t say it was easier then I expected. However, it definitely could have been worse. The waiting and decision making was very tough. Also I seem to get tired really quickly. Not really napping though just need to lay down at some point late in the day. Can’t wait for approval to start exercising again:-))❤️💪🏻

I thought I posted in my journal before but I guess not, not sure where I posted lol. Anyway just posting for the first time. I am just trying to make sense of all of this. I have severe mitral valve regurgitation and have begun to accept the fact that I will have surgery possibly in the fall. I am in information gathering mode now so I can make the best decisions for best out come possible!! I am also trying to live in the now or otherwise I think this would just consume my thoughts 24/7 if I allowed it to. That would be sad because I still want to try and enjoy life as always. I imagine there will be plenty of time to stress as the actual surgery date is set and becomes a reality. I am trying to only think positive and healing thoughts but there's no doubt it can be a challenge. Anyway that's what I've got to share for now to be continued

Emily Rowley I hear you Mara 💕 I too had severe mitral regurgitation-I can now honestly say surgery helps alot! Do you experience any symptoms? Mine were: Fatigue, very much short of breath, chest pains, heart palpitations. Have you met with an experienced Surgeon who you feel comfortable with, if so will they pergorm a repair or replacement? It helps having a Surgeon who is open with you and can answer all your questions/concerns (hopefully I too can allievate some of your worries). It's always good to have a back up plan, as sometimes they don't fully know until they get in there/open you up. I know you will be bombarded with so much information, trying to take it in, you have time, so relax, breathe and take time to smell the flowers 🌺 I am here 🙂

Ben Hyman Hello Mara. I know EXACTLY how you feel. I 've had severe MR since 2008 and I've known about my Mitral Valve Prolapse since the late 80's. I knew I would need surgery 2 years ago and I joined this site 2 years to the day that I had it done. I had Robotic Mitral Valve Repair at Mayo Rochester ob March 15th. I was discharged in 3 days. It wasn't nearly as bad as I imagined and I'm home recovering for the next 3 weeks. It was hard keeping things together and staying calm up to the day of surgery, but I found this site and the patients that participate to be extremely helpful in letting me know what to expect. Let the community know how we can help you

Hi this is my first post on this website. I am not sure how to add photos but will try eventually :-)) Anyway I have been on a watch and wait scenario with my mitral valve prolapse, but it then worsened to having severe regurgitation. Still on the twice a year echo schedule and nothing has changed. I am very active and have danced my whole life. I still take class 4-5 days a week and do some performing and teaching. I know that I will have to deal with my valve problem at some point and decided to have a surgical consult. At this meeting I was told I should probably do the surgery within the next 6 months. I definitely did not see that coming and just thought at some point in the future I will have to deal with this. I just never thought of it as too big a deal because that's how my cardiologists represented it. Now of course with this latest development I got really freaked out and know I have many decisions to make. Such as when is there ever a good day for this? Which hospital, which doctor and which procedure. Now I am in information gathering mode and then will make my decisions. I will be college searching with my 3rd child next week who is a highschooler. If there was anyway I could heal this through the power of my mind body and spirit I sure would give it my all. The thought of all of this is overwhelming. I've now allowed myself roughly a 1/2 hour a day to obsess, discuss, research or whatever else I need to do on this topic. I just took an awesome vacation to kind of regroup, clear my head and take some deep breaths. I like to think of it as plastic surgery for my heart valve I actually read that somewhere didn't make it up. Until next time.....

Kathy Blank Mara- there is never a perfect time to schedule heart surgery but it is important to schedule before you get heart damage. I went to 2 cardiologists and 3 surgeons to get several opinions. I found differing treatment recommendations and did lots of reading especially on this site. Learn all you can about your unique heart issue and then you can feel confident in picking the best surgeon for you! Good luck!
