Hello,
I am new to this community. I had a Ross procedure on 1/21/26 and was wondering if anyone experienced a lot of back pain post open heart surgery? It is hard to get comfortable and not much relieves the pain long term. Any tips are helpful!

Richard Munson I did not have the ross procedure but i did have open heart mitral valve surgery. If i am reading your post correctly, you had surgery on 1-21-26. Thats only 10 days ago. 10 days is nothing. I recall being in a very confined position for hours during mine. My shoulder has never been the same. Thats 2021 btw. I had a prostate biopsy a couple of weeks back which was no way as tough as heart surgery. It still is uncomfortable. In a different location of course.

Adam Pick I had the Ross Procedure and I did back pain and chest pain after the surgery. What helped was two things... First, I started stretching. Then, I went to a great cardiac rehab class that really helped me. Together, 99.9% of my pain went away. So you know, I had my Ross Procedure over 20 years ago. Every once in a while, I still get a little chest pain when lifting objects (especially luggage when getting on and off a plane). If you're not familiar with cardiac rehab, I'll put a link below.
Learn why cardiac rehabilitation programs are important for patients after cardiac surgery in this special interview with Dr. Ram Dandillaya.

Grace Mason Hi Josh, Welcome to recovery! My back and shoulders were really painful post surgery. What gave me most immediate relief, though temporary, was icy hot roll on. I also alternated heat and cold and gentle stretches. Definitely get signed up for cardiac rehab as Adam suggested too, if you are able. If there is a wait to get into cardiac rehab maybe your GP would refer you for PT to address your back specifically. It took some weeks time for my pains to ease but eventually it does get better. Hang in there.
J Alexander Lassally Yes - lots of upper back and shoulder pain. Quite normal, unfortunately.

Richard Munson Great answer adam and good advice. Unfortunately there is a mindset out there that open heart surgery is a painless procedure with instant recovery. I think josh will be fine as time goes by and i wish him well. Give it some time my friend, its the great healer, along with walking.
John Cook I had almost no pain in my sternum and a lot of back pain and stiffness after my Ross surgery.
while I was in the hospital, I had them putting hot packs several times a day on my back. When I came home, I used a heating pad on my back for a very long time.
I was also taking 650mg Tylenol 4x a day and 250mg naproxen 2x a day. I took the Tylenol for 7 weeks before tapering off. I took the naproxen for 6 months. Tylenol sometimes takes a week or two to become completely affective against this kind of pain. ... Read more

I only remember taking oxycodone once in ICU and it turned me into a zombie for 5 hours. I didn’t take any of it at home.

Pamela Gregory Yes, a surprising amount of back and shoulder pain. I believe it is from how you lay on the table during surgery. It will go away but definitely heating pad and icing helped.
