I'm on day 11 of having atrial & mitral valve replaced along with a MAZE procedure. Unfortunately, I am still in hospital after having my esophagus torn a little and on 2 weeks of no food or liquids to eat. Will retest on Monday to see if it's healed. Sure hope so, this part isn't fun with tubes and wires still hanging out of me everywhere.
Good news heart is working great now.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. 24 hours to go now. I've chosen a bovine valve because I dont want to be on blood thinners. Hopefully, if replacement is needed down the road, the technology will be better for replacement.
I lost my parents and husband within a year of each other and although my children are going to help me, I miss their support at this time. I know they are here in spirit though.

Tammy Pilcher Jane, I also have a bovine tissue replacement for my bicuspid aortic valve. I chose it for the same reason. My surgery was almost 9 months ago and I've done great. My surgery wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. I'm so sorry about the loss of your parents and husband in such a short time. I can't imagine how hard that must be. I do believe, as you said, that they are with you in spirit. I felt like my dad was with me in spirit, too. Sending prayers and hugs for you, heart sister. You are going to do great! God bless you!
Cheryl Batzing Jane, you are in my prayers for a successful surgery tomorrow and quick recovery! Blessings.

Jean Raber I'm sure the last 48 hours of waiting is the hardest. Will it help to think about where you'll be a week from today? Probably walking around with the worst behind you. And remember you won't be alone. Those nurses know their stuff, they'll be there 24/7, and their job is to watch you like a hawk so you can rest and get better.

Wiliam Height You have a great choice of surgeon and in the best hands. Accept this but will be fixed. Tell your mind to shut up and stop thinking about the last 48 hours, next week, and just be in this moment the second you read this and stay there.

Terrie Syvertsen Jane, Excellent post to you from Jean Raber! Before my surgery (as with most of us) those last hours give you the perfect time to try to put the fear away and give yourself time to think of what it is you want to reflect on as you enter the actual surgery. Jean mentions to think about where you'll be a week from today(excellent)as it is what someone told me to do as well and so I had it planned to present to my surgeon a Woman who had confidence that within the day and evening of my surgery I would come through to the other side and "deal" with the outcome to the best of my ability. I also chose to picture something in my head(kayaking on a serene lake with my husband paddling ahead of me with his raiders of the lost ark "hat" on like we had done many times and were up until surgery some of my most beautiful moments of my life. My wish is for you to prepare some memory of your own that is deep within your heart that as you are wheeled into surgery you can draw upon so that your heart is full and ready to face your "team" with good thoughts as well as prepare you for waking up soon after to begin your healing/recovery. I had my husband bring in a photo of us kayaking(go to my photos and you will see the actual scene that he flashed at me as we said "goodbye" and I was rolled into surgery(with a big grin on my face, mind you).
Perhaps you have someone who will be "seeing you off" who could bring a photo of such an event for you as I found it was a most calming feeling and would wish the same for everyone! Also, as mentioned above by your Heart Brothers and Heart Sisters, you are in the best of hands with people focused on YOU and you will find the time you enter into surgery to waking up with a grateful and mended heart seems like it only took minutes! I will say a healing and mighty prayer for you when it is your time as well as afterward that all goes well for you with your surgery as well as when
you enter recovery as your journey continues. Believe all will be well and remember you have a very large community of people waiting to hear from you as offer you support as you recover!
