As I look ahead to mitral valve repair surgery soon, I am wondering what the experience of women patients has been in regard to bras. As a post-menopausal woman with generous breasts and the effects of years of gravity (does that paint a clear enough picture?!?), I worry about the pull of the breasts on a new scar right after surgery and beyond. Were you given a bra to wear, or put into a bra post-surgery? Did it alleviate the pulling problem? Do you recommend a certain type or brand of bra -- front closure, back closure, pull-on? I have read contradictory advice about this, but I am positive that wearing no bra at all would be just awful. Looking for the advice of experienced patients! Thank you.

Rita Savelis I hear you Jane and this is a question to ask your surgeon. Hospitals sometimes put women in "post surgery surgical bras" for this reason (less pulling on the scar) - but they won't necessarily tell you all about it beforehand! There are women who decide not to wear a bra as almot anything can feel uncomfortable after surgery and others who find another post-surgery bra that works for them on internet (as you have probably seen). It's personal. There are many female issues that are not addressed immediately and openly because it is still, alas, a man's world. You will hopefully get many comments/words of advice from other women who have been there. Wishing you the best. Take care.
Richard Munson Its not a man's world anymore Rita. Well, maybe in my world and in Afghanistan.

Rose Madura I was given a surgical bra at the hospital. I wore it when someone came to see me or if I went out. But recuperating around the house I went braless. But I am not well endowed so that definitely will make a difference.

Susan Jones Hi Jane. I'm similarly well endowed. I've had the same worries. I plan to have some very frank discussions with my surgeon when my turn comes. Don't have any answers but wanted you to know you aren't alone in you're concerns.

Patsy Stewart One thing you need to remember when choosing a bra closure is the fact that you won’t be able to lift your arms above your head and no pulling or tugging with your arms. It definitely is a question I would ask the surgeon or even his nurses about. I could almost win a prize for being flat chested. I wore a bra back to my first drs visit after OHS, and she told me to take that thing off. Lol! I took it off in her office and it’s been quite liberating. I wear undershirts and they do the trick for me. I will admit that I never go anywhere but to the dr or riding in the car. We also never have anyone here at the house. I’m still under Covid restrictions from my drs. Sending lots of love, hugs and prayers your way.
Does anyone have thoughts to share on Dr. Curtis Anderson and/or NC Heart and Vascular Hospital for a mitral valve leaflet and cord repair?
Thank you!

Susan Lynn Wish I could help, Jane. Like Timothy, I had the same procedures, but a different surgeon and facility. You may want to see if NC publishes ratings for cardiac surgeons in your state as the Joint Commission does in my state. Experience in your specific repair is important in making your selection. Best of luck with your research.
Jane Fenn Thanks so much to those who commented. I appreciate the help!
