Hi everyone! I am 5 weeks out of the surgery. My mitral valve was replaced with a mechanical valve. I had the surgery at Cleveland Clinic. It went well. When I got discharged, the doctor at CC said they usually recommend aspirin indefinitely in those with a mitral valve replacement or repair, however they also said it’s not a strong recommendation. They asked me to discuss with my regular cardiologist. My regular cardiologist just told me I can stop taking baby aspirin.
For those who had open heart surgeries, especially mitral valve surgeries, are you taking the daily baby aspirin? Please share your experience. Thanks!

Adam Pick Great question Grace. Sounds like you are getting mixed messages here. Maybe you want to go back to the CC team and let them know that your cardiologist has a different opinion. Maybe the CC team has some new research or understanding about your particular valve (and or replacement type) that warrants ongoing baby aspirin usage? Just an idea.

Carlos Banuelos Hi Grace, CC told me to take a baby aspirin for life. That was inconsistent with how my cardiologist manages his heart patients. He called and discussed it with CC and now agrees with the approach. I have a mechanical aortic valve so not same facts as you. But definitely call or have your doctor call CC.

I had the open heart surgery two weeks ago to replace my mitra valve with a mechanical valve. The surgery went well. I stayed in hospital for 6 days and got discharged. It’s great to be home! However the recovery seems a long load ahead of me. A few days ago I had an Afib and had to go to ER. Doctors put me on some medications which helped my heart rhythm go back to normal. The x ray showed there was fluid building up on the lung, which explained my cough. So I am on torsemide to help get fluid out of body. Hopefully things will get better soon! Does anybody have similar experience with the Afib or the fluid in lung?
Another questions - is there a limit to how much water we can take after the open heart surgery? I am just worried if I drink too much water I will have more fluid in my body.

Hello Grace and welcome to recovery. I had fluid in my lungs and it lasted a few weeks. I was given Lasix and eventually got rid of it. Keep walking if you can. I don’t know about the water but I never stopped drinking it as I love water. Ask your doctor. Wish you a continued recovery and be patient with your body. God bless you

Barbara Wood Yes, I had both issues after mitral repair - I had the pleural effusion drained before leaving the hospital & was sent home on lasix. I went back into the hospital for a few days after being home about a week for a cardioversion after afib developed. I'd ask my doc about water consumption, I think I might have been asked to temporarily drink less ( but can't quite remember, it seems so long ago :)). Best recovery wishes Grace!

Recovering from OHS can take more time than expected and bring on side effects/aftereffects no one told you about but that are common like Afib and water retention. Your body had been through a lot and is reacting. It will settle but takes time. I think drinking water is fine unless you are told to cut back. Take care.

My mitra valve regurgitation is from rheumatic fever I got when I was a kid. I had a mitra valve repair 17 years ago. Just a couple of years after the surgery the mitra valve leakage came back. I was told it could be coming from the progression of rheumatic disease. I am just worried it will come back again even after the re-repair if rheumatic disease is progressive. Does anyone have experience in rheumatic valve disease? Thanks.

Grace Huang Hi Rose, thanks for your response! I may have two options for my re-operation: re-repair or replacement. Did your doctor compare repair and replacement when you had the surgery? Thanks.

Have you been to Northwestern? They have a tremendous cardiac program. Dr. Patrick McCarthy is often featured on this site. I believe he spent quite a few years at the Cleveland Clinic during his career. There's great info on this site about him and several other Northwestern surgeons. Check out the menu at the top of the page. The Cleveland Clinic is definitely well respected and you should get multiple opinions until you are fully confident in your choice. Good luck with your research! ❤

Maybe one of the heart warriors on this site who had their procedures there will share their advice and experience. Best of luck! ❤

Thomas Brusstar Dr. McCarthy did my mitral repair in an open heart procedure in 2018. It was perfectly successful, with zero leakage since. He is a no-nonsense, confident guy, and has done probably more than 13,000 heart surgeries. He is the head of cardiac surgery at Northwestern. He did remark at the time that if my mitral valve ever needs work again, a trans catheter placement would be possible because of the annular ring implanted in 2018. We obviously don’t expect to have to re-do it, but yours might work as that valve-in-valve placement. My cardiologist is Dr. James Thomas at Northwestern. They are both originally from the Cleveland Clinic.
