Hello Everyone... Welp, I survived... My AVR surgery was on April 13th... Originally I was told by my surgeon, Dr. Burke at the University of Washington Heart Institute that it would require 4 to 6 hours... Apparently it only required 2.5 hours, and by the time I was awake in... Read more.

Woo-hoo, Earl! Glad you're home and doing so well!!! Sorry to hear about the accommodations at the hospital - luckily your stay was short. Take your recovery slow and steady. Please keep us updated! ❤️

Glad to hear you're doing so well! Dr Burke did my Ross procedure, and he did an amazing job.. I will say tho… just like you, I had to move back and forth from the bed to the chair as well! Very uncomfortable and no sleep!! Excited to hear your... Read more.

Hey Gang... Well, we are getting down to the last few days before my surgery... I am scheduled for April 13th... One question my wife has asked me to ask all of you, is whether or not there are a particular style of shirt that is going to be easier... Read more.

Definitely button down. Wife knows best! 😊 (I asked the same question before surgery. Got the same answer. And spot-on).

No T Shirt. Wear one you can button. It will hurt to raise your arms over your head. Ad a larger one too - not tight. That would be my advice. Good question.

Earl - I agree with Deena and Rose on the button down shirts. You may also want to bring a pair of sweat pants or other elastic waist band pants. All the fluids we get during surgery and during our hospital stays can add temporary weight very quickly. You want... Read more.

Great advices from the girls, I agree.

I did fine with t-shirts a size bigger than usual so I had room when putting them on. I preferred tshirt over button shirt so i didnt have seam rubbing incision.

Button down for sure!

Button up shirts are perfect. After surgery, you aren't supposed to raise your arms above your head for 2 months so that your sternum will stay in place and knit back together.

wow I did not know any of this either and my surgery is the 10th about button up shirts thank you for asking that question

Blessings to you for a perfect heart surgery Earl. Greg you sure know how to bring the stress relief with a little levity. :D

I have always loved the practicality of high fashion… Who wouldn't want to wear the 2 outfits that Greg suggested? 😂

Trying to picture laying in my hospital room after heart surgery and seeing nurse marie walking in wearing that green dress.

I think it would be quite flattering… But seeing that might send you into afib…

Think of all the post surgery torture tools you could carry under that.

The top one looks complicated, probably need a hand getting out of it.

Earl - You might want to bring a robe and pj pants, too. You'll be walking those hallways a day or two after surgery. The hospital gowns can be drafty! The whole stay goes very fast, so resist the temptation to overpack. You'll be home before you know it! ❤️

I thought part of the mystique was wearing the hospital gown on backwards.

Heard overhead in the hospital- "Call security on Richard Munson again…".

(Laughing. Too funny . Visualize it all.)

You are all killing me!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you!!! Will get some nice flannel pj's with button up fronts...

Anyone have experience with autologous blood donation prior to surgery. It seems that I am the only person on the planet that has ever asked UW Heart Institute about donating prior to surgery "just in case"...
3 years ago (December 9, 2022)
No..lots of people feel that way due to fear of getting "bad blood"..but the new testing they have now is more advanced and blood is purified. You never know how much blood you may need..no sense in using your own and making your body weaker.but it's a personal choice you... Read more.

Many procedures are bloodless, i.e., barring some complication, no blood products are used. Good luck! ❤️

I've tried to do this a few years ago. I remember going to the clinic and after a blood test, they said no to me donating my own. My dad and husband both donated blood for me, but the day of the surgery they didn't use either one of theirs.... Read more.

I asked before my surgery and they said it really isn't worth it. Their plan was not to give me any blood during my open heart surgery, and they didn't. I lost a fair amount during surgery, so I was anemic for a few weeks afterwards, but I recovered.
