I had aortic vale replacement surgery almost one year ago. Today I learned that I have non-rheumatic mitral regurgitation. Does this mean that I will need to be opened up again to replace a mitral valve?
Phyllis Petersen Probably only if it gets severe. It took years for mine to progress.

Denise Kirchner My mitral valve regurgitation started in my early 30's and I was 59 before it had progressed to severe and had my 1st repair in 2012. Scarring on the repaired leaflet caused the regurgitation to return and I had a re-repair just 3 weeks ago which was successful. I will keep you in my prayers.
Stephanie Batres My mother has had mitral cable regurgitation for a few years but will be having surgery next week.

Corey Sines It all depends on how severe it is, if its mild/moderate it will likely eventually progress to severe, that's the just the nature of valve disease. But this can be quick, or take many years. That's why its important to keep getting echo's at regular intervals.

Doran Herritt Not sure didn't have that issue. Maybe try the compression socks and ankle exercises, etc.

Mary K Not too long. Are you being careful about your salt intake? Keeping the feet elevated helps, too, along with the compression hose. Chsrles is right about the weight. We are supposed to call the doctor if there is a sudden weight gain.

Gary Stripling Man, I had badly swollen ankles and feet - my sisters called them "Kardashian Piggies" - that lasted for about 3 weeks post surgery. Even my thighs felt like sausage caseins. By the beginning of my 3rd week post-surgery, when I began walking down my driveway and back with my wife, the swelling started to subside. That took about 7-8 more days before they really looked normal again. But they do go down!
Gerald Schaffer They will get better with walking. Did they give you any medication to help get rid of the fluids?

Catheterization tomorrow, followed by AVR surgery on Thursday. Hoping for the best.

Elaine Cutri If you have time and like music, put some playlists together. This is very helpful when your awake, but can't focus or are a little out of it. My best wishes for a successful surgery and great outcome.
Liz Burroughs Good luck with your surgery & recovery.
Trying to stay strong. Walking daily, watching diet. Can not say that I am not a little frightful of what will happen a week from today.

Shawn Urban BTDT. You got this. I my opinion it was not that bad. They had me up and walking the same day. After release from the hospital I was pretty much able to do everything on my own.
Almost one year out and I feel perfectly normal, if not better than prior to the valve replacement.
Glad I had it done.
Terry Chase Very best luck. May you soon be like me looking back over the years.

Jeanette Davidson David it is really scary. The emotional angst is so painful where you are now. You will have a few tough days. From me a lot of it seems surreal and I can't believe it happened. It's three months since my surgery and I did extremely well with a triple bypass and AVR. Try to remember that your heart is being repaired and you will begin a new journey stronger, with more perspective, really choosing how you spend your time and be an inspiration to others . Keep reaching out heart brother!❤️
David Yetman Thank you all for your encouraging comments, and advice.

susan kotansky The few days before surgery were indeed the most difficult for me. Stay busy, try to keep your mind on happy thoughts, positive outcomes. Before you know it you will be totally busy getting better and this part will be a memory. I wish the best outcome for your surgery and peace of mind until it's done.
