And it was confirmed I have a bicuspid aortic valve, so I no longer qualify for the TAVR clinical study. That being said, I'm in line to have a minimally invasive aortic valve replacement with a surgeon, who performed the same procedure on my identical twin brother last December in my hometown, probably at the end of July or first week of August. Looking forward to it.

My doctors think that I have a Bicuspid Aortic Valve, (despite a CT scan and an echogram report that contradict their opinion) instead of a Tricuspid valve, which rules me out from having a TAVR procedure, and participating in a clinical trial for low risk patients. My twin brother had minimally invasive Aortic Valve replacement surgery last year, and if his surgeon's report indicated removal of a tricuspid valve, there might be hope. Keeping fingers crossed.(Update) He had a bicuspid valve, so I'm out of consideration for the trial. Sigh.....

For June 7th starting at 7 a.m., and there are 7 appointments that morning. Are you noticing a pattern? :-) It starts with a blood draw and ends with a "new patient visit TAVI". I might qualify for a clinical trial for TAVR for low risk patients. I'm excited, and not the least bit worried. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Phyllis Petersen Congratulations! That's great. All the best for qualifying, replacement and recovery.

Carol Jackson I will be following your progress. Can you tell me more about the TAVR for low risk patients? Do they do TAVR's for people under 65 who are not at high risk? How long does the TAVR last compared to a tissue valve? That being said, if the TAVR fails after so many years, can it be replaced with another TAVR? Thanks.

Bob Fessler My cardiologist is also submitting my name for this study which is called Partner 3. If you meet the requirements and are accepted, you have a 50-50 chance of a TAVR. Otherwise you get a SAVR which would be minimally invasive. They compare the results from the two different methods over a number of years. Yes Carol, you can be any age. As far as replacing a TAVR with another TAVR....yes they can do this. I have been researching the heck out of this. How long the TAVR lasts is unknown. They have evidence of five years for sure. They expect results similar to a regular tissue valve but only time will tell. That's why they have these studies. Let me know if you want more info.
Cathleen Weed I had TAVR in August 2015 ❤️ So easy and doing great!
Bob Fotoples Found out I have a bicuspid valve so the TAVR is out.
Bob Fessler Which test did they do to pin down the bicuspid valve?

is scheduled for June 1st. In the mean time, a Memorial Day camping trip is in the offing, but others we scheduled (before the possibility of a earlier surgery date arose,) are in question because of post surgery limitations (weight I can lift, when I can drive, etc.) I'm excited to get on with everything, once I made the decision to get the 2nd opinion.

Bob Fessler Bob...you sound like me. I had a second opinion 2 weeks ago. Following that, I made the decision to move on and my cath is scheduled for this Monday. I'm sure surgery will be scheduled for sometime in the next few months. I'll let you know about my cath experience but I don't think it will be a big deal.

Bob Fotoples Thanks, Bob. Please let me know how it goes. I've watched some videos about the procedure for a Heart Cath, AND the one I'll be having--TAVR. I'm looking at the first week in August for my procedure. I'll know more after my Heart Cath. I've thought of things to ask now that i've had more time to think about it.

Right now my cardiologist says that "NOW is the time to address the stenotic aortic valve-IT IS CLOSE." I know I am going to have the surgery. I feel pretty good. I have days where I walk on the treadmill for a mile and have no issues, and then days when I have to pop a Tums, or pause for a minute or two.
I'm in the process of picking the surgeon to do the procedure right now. My twin brother used a surgeon (who was on his list) when he had his Minimally-invasive Aortic Valve replacement surgery done last December. This doctor is the highest rated in our city, but that hospital isn't even on the list of the 100 best hospitals for cardiac care in the U.S., however the hospital my own cardiologist suggested I go to for a second opinion, University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center, is. I'm thinking U of M. I will be on Medicare as of May 1st, and I'm wondering if anyone else can give me a clue of what costs are like for someone on Medicare? Thanks in advance! Btw, I'm looking at November 2017 for my procedure. (now it looks like August!)

Bob Fotoples I have an appointment on Wednesday, the 17th of May at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center at the University of Michigan. This is a second opinion appt., and may ultimately be the place where I'll have my procedure. U of M is highly ranked as a cardiac care facility. I feel confident that I will be cared for very well. I'm not fearful of the outcome. It's just the waiting. I am shooting for an early November surgery date. I'm also interested in an Equine valve. Has anyone on this site had one of those as an Aortic replacement valve? I'd be curious to read from those who have.

Bob Fotoples I had a very comprehensive Echo and a CT scan today at Frankel Cardiovascular Center at the University of Michigan. Dr. Deeb and his associate Dr. Chetcuti, agreed that I have severe Aortic Stenosis, and that I am in line for a TAVR procedure in early August. I am excited to get on with this, and pave the way back to good heart health.
Can't comment on Michigan because we're in NY. My husband had a TAVR at NYU and was home the next day. No pain, no nothing. His cardiac rehab has been a bit slow because he was overweight and badly deconditioned going in.
Of course, you want your surgeon to be adept at TAVR. Our doctor, Dr Matthew Williams, has done a gadzillion of them.
Good luck!
