I made it! My bio prosthetic Edwards Inspiris Resilia valve is in! Also had the aortic annulus enlargement to fit it! Discharge echocardiogram was so cool seeing it function so beautifully! The worst part was wheeling into the OR and then the first night! After that, recovery was so fast and discharged on day 4. No regrets doing it despite being asymptomatic! Surgeon said the severe stenosis/ calcification / fibrosis was life threatening and was way past time! I have lived over 7 years with asymptomatic severe bicuspid aortic stenosis. Struggling with some hypotension and a resting heart rate around 100 and anemia from the surgery! If you are hesitating as I was don’t.....it is scary but do it! I think I was told over and over how great of a job my world recognized surgeon did! Thank you Dr Hani Najm and Cleveland Clinic Staff!!!

Beth Allen Thank you all! My post op bloodwork, ekg, cxr, echo and exam went very well. I traveled back to Cincinnati on post op day 9. Travel day was exhausting but I am walking a few miles a day now. Slowly but walking. Incisional pain has not been an issue instead overall achiness which they said is muscular so I am on motrin for that and it helps a lot. Other than that just a baby aspirin and a low dose beta blocker. Normal sinus rhythm and the heart murmur preop is gone!

One week until we leave for Cleveland Clinic! Any packing suggestions! Ordered a wedge already and bought shirts that button up the front! All moved into the new house! It is a ranch and will help with my recovery. I am exhausted!

Shannon Gray You may want some help when you get home to place every day type things in your kitchen low, so you don’t have to reach. Also, maybe a pair of boxers to wear under the hospital gown when you go on your hallway walks.

My head is spinning I have so much to do before my aortic annulus enlargement and bicuspid aortic valve replacement at Cleveland Clinic. We are moving on August 13 with my surgery to follow two weeks later. I have to be well for the birth of our first grandchild in early October. Hence, the rush to get this done.
I feel great with no symptoms and exercise regularly so this is very hard to agree to. I have lived with aortic stenosis for almost 7 years due to a bicuspid aortic valve. The doctors don’t want to wait any longer. I had a repair of a coarctation of the aorta as a child so I have lived with congenital heart disease my whole life.
I don’t even know what to ask all of you just please give me suggestions as what I need to do to prepare for this!

Erik Jensen Hi Ann. Wow, you have a lot going on! My #1 suggestion is to keep talking things out with your support group here on this site. I only discovered this group a few weeks ago but it has helped me so much as I prepare for my surgery on Wednesday. My friends and family have been absolutely awesome, but talking to others walking in my footsteps has been immensely comforting. I also suggest reading Adam’s book. Having all that information has really helped prepare me. Best of luck to you!

Shannon Gray Beth... I am so glad you’ve found this site. I had surgery at CC 3 1/2 years ago and we also share some of the same heart abnormalities, although my coarctation hasn’t warranted any surgery. If you ever have any questions or want to learn more about others experiences, please reach out. These next couple of weeks are the hardest but you are greatly supported here.

Joy Vera Hi Beth. I was 57 when I had my bicuspid aortic valve replaced & coarctation repaired & can relate to not being symptomatic. I wasn't either. My stenosis was in the severe range though & everything I read & what I was advised by my surgeon was - better to have the surgery sooner than later. So I trusted him. I guess that's my advice for the first step - trust. As Erik says, reading Adam's book is so helpful for preparing too. Best of luck to you!
Erik Jensen Beth, I’m sorry for calling you Ann...!

Beth Allen What things to I need to have purchased for post op? I have read about a wedge? What exactly is this and where do I get this? What about shirts that button up the front rather than pulling over my head? Thinking that might be hard for me. How about a step stool to get in and out of bed easier? I am only just over 5 ft. I will be spending a week in Cleveland after my discharge so anything special to travel by car home I need? Anything else? Thanks so much!

Shannon Gray Hi Beth! I would ask Drs about the step stool.Drs don’t want any risk of falls. I slept on the couch and then a recliner for a few weeks, but I have a super tall bed. . I’m 4’10”, so I get it. I would have daily items placed of the counters, easy to reach. Same thing with going ahead and positioning items in the fridge in a level easy to reach... no raising the arms. A wedge can be found at Wal Mart, Amazon... just google bed wedges. I would have easy to put on items of clothing... buttons, but no pulling over head. I also sized up on some tops so it would be flowy and easy to get on and comfortable to wear. Scars can be really uncomfortable when it’s rubbed by clothing. I would have extra pillows for the car ride home... you will have to sit in the back (at least I was advised to).

Susan Lynn Beth - i bought a wedge (from Amazon), ,had a recliner, and ultimately discovered having a few pillows that I could rearrange worked best for me. Having options is a good idea since it can be initially difficult to find comfortable positions. I also recommend a shower chair or stool just in case you feel weak.
If your bed is high, it might be better to have assistance getting in and out. Lifting weight with your arms is restricted early into your recovery.
Don't worry so much - you'll quickly find what works for you and you'll be regaining strength and flexibility with each day. You're going to be fine. ❤

Beth Allen Thank you I will look into a wedge on amazon. I won’t be able to get a recliner as we will stay in Cleveland post op for a week at my sons house before I travel by car home to Cincinnati. I will be sure to take the wedge and lots of pillows to his house! Thank you all for your advice....surgery will be here in a few weeks! Moving on 8/13!
