Yesterday was the two year anniversary of my aortic valve replacement surgery and aortic aneurysm repair. God sure has blessed us. It’s hard to express how grateful I am and how blessed I feel to be doing so well.

On 9/13/2025 I ran the Mattie Conley Memorial 5K in Russell, KY. This race was kind of a big deal for me. Since I did my first 5K in 2021, I always said “Someday” I’d like to be able to run a 5K in under 30 minutes and “Someday” I’d like to be able to run the entire distance without walking. After my aortic valve surgery in Oct 2023, I had almost given up on “Someday” but on this day ☝🏻🙌🏻 I did both! I’m so blessed and thankful.

I celebrated the occasion by participating in THE PACEMAKERS 5K Presented By The Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School Of Medicine in Barboursville WV. Proceeds go toward helping support medical student health, physical activity, and wellbeing.

6 weeks today! Post-surgery update

*I was released by Dr. Lars Svensson, my surgeon at Cleveland Clinic, one month after surgery with no restrictions.
*My heart has returned to a normal sinus rhythm with no atrial fibrillation.
*I’ve been able to manage any discomfort with only the occasional Tylenol, no opioids or narcotics.
*I’ve been able to walk up to 3 miles a day including inclines. I’ve also started some short intervals of light jogging on the treadmill.
*I had my introduction to cardiac rehabilitation at SMMC in Huntington WV this week. I'm hopeful there's a 5K in my future this spring.

We have been blessed with the most amazing family and friends supporting us with their love and prayers. We appreciate everyone who checked in on us.

We are still in awe of all the amazingly talented doctors, nurses and staff who touched our lives while at the Cleveland Clinic. God has been so good to us. We cannot begin to praise him enough for all he has done!

Sean Adkins Yes - the ICU days were the longest most difficult. I had a painful spasm after the nurses pulled one of my tubes, an allergic reaction to some medication administered during day 2. CPAP was used to help me get weened off the oxygen quicker. The most important thing is to get your procedure at a high volume center of excellence

Jay Burgess Great news that is always fun have to have open heart surgery while were in there lets do a bypass. I was glad when mine cleared too and didn’t need it. I create plaque and they were at one point 50% block and 25% block on the other side. This was from a CT Angiogram. The Coronary in the gold standard. I went back to being a vegan and also take repatha for my LPa/LDL issue. I don’t ever want to have bypass surgery or another open heart surgery for that matter. Hopefully in 14 years TAVR is all I need.
