I'd love to hear others' experience with post-surgery arrhythmia. I was doing great after my mitral valve repair surgery, but now I'm a month post-op and am getting regular bouts of arrhythmia. I'm taking extra doses of metoprolol when it happens, but I'm not sure when to really worry and when to just deal with it. (I have a heart monitor to record the episodes for a week.) Working with my doctor, but would love others' input too, like how long it lasted and whether you were able to go about regular activities, etc. Thanks!

J Alexander Lassally Many mitral patients have expressed arrythmia post surgery - it is an under discussed part of the risks and benefits of this ordeal. The robot surgery is not exempt from this.

Jill Porter I was in Afib for 5 weeks post op. I was on Amiodorone (not spelling it correctly) and some other meds and eventually (5 weeks) it stopped. I still get an occasional palpitation which they tell me not to worry about. I think one month post op is still early days and it will probably settle down soon. I understand- it is a very uncomfortable feeling!

Robert Miller Give it at least a couple of months and see what it is then. Metoprolol can help if your heart rate is high but if you "just" have AFib, then I believe Amiodarone is more helpful. Metoprolol also lowers your blood pressure which might lead to more dizziness, especially now that temperatures are getting higher again. Amiodarone should not be used over a long period of time. You might also want to use a device like the Kardia 6L, a Samsung Galaxy watch or an Apple watch. They help track AFib and pulse rate. On the watches, use the EKG function to do so as in my experience they are not accurate at all in the "automated" mode.
If after several months it still doesn't go away, you might be looking at cardio version or possibly even ablation. I did not have any issue doing my regular activities.
John Cook I had one episode of v-tach in the hospital because my electrolytes were low from diuretics.

Kimberly Eisenhut Oh boy, don't get me started ! I had tricuspid repair last Sept and subsequent recurring pericarditis. As soon as Pericarditis started a month after my surgery, I went into accelerated junctional arythmia which jumps back and forth into sinus and back. Still trying to figure it out. No fun

Rose Madura Peggy, I had bouts of afib and aflutter for about six weeks after surgery. Then, they simply stopped. I think that is normal. Continue to work with your cardiologist and hopefully, they will eventually stop.

Hi all, This is my first post here. I had a mitral valve robotic repair surgery on 2/4/26, so exactly a month ago, at Cedars-Sinai in LA. My surgeon Dr. Joanna Chikwe and nurse practitioner Vivian Burkhart, along with all the inpatient nurses and staff, provided excellent care. My surgery was pretty straightforward and I didn't have any other issues that required treating — I was out of the hospital on my 4th day.
Since then, I've had a couple issues: ocular migraines and one night of an irregular heartbeat (hopefully a one-off) that means I'm now wearing a heart monitor for a week. But overall I feel like everything went really well, even though I'm feeling impatient about the recovery process. The follow-up with Cedars has also been amazing. I cannot recommend my medical team and Cedars in general highly enough. I know I am in excellent hands. So grateful!!

Marie Myers Ocular migraines are a common theme here post heart surgery. I had dozens of auras in the months following my heart surgery. They gradually decreased with time. The arrhythmias i experienced were all short lived and they also gradually decreased with time. Glad your experience was great!

Pamela Gregory I also had frequent ocular migraines and still have them although not very often now. Never had them before surgery? Lots of heart patients seem to get them. Sounds like other than that you are doing well! Congratulations

John Cook I had migraine aura for a couple decades before my surgery. The best advice I can give you is to try to figure out your triggers. For me it was bright computer screens, especially white screens, and glare from sunshine on snow.
When they happen, I take a naproxen and try to find a dark room to ride it out.

Peggy Bennett Thanks everyone! I'm new to this site and didn't see all the replies until now. This is super helpful. The ocular migraines are getting better but the arrythmias getting worse. I did find out that these can actually get worse about a month out from surgery, which is where I'm at, but going to contact my doctor to see if/when I should be worried. Thanks again :)
