For many patients there is no pain with a cut sternum. This is what my anasthesiologist told me beforehand and it was true for me. I had lots of discomfort but no pain. Wishing you the best.

I agree that no one is ever ready to have open heart surgery. Having been through it 4 years ago, I have to say it was not as bad as I worried it might be. I was mostly uncomfortable and cranky, but pain was not a big factor for me.... Read more.
