I am about 3 years post op for AVR and lately have been bouts of slow pule rates with dizziness and weakness, (probably about once every month and a half). I take my pulse and it hovers at or below 60 for about an hour and then the symptoms disappear, then I feel normal again. Has anybody had this and is this bradycardia? Thanks for any input. Mark

I am 8 weeks post op for Aortic Valve Replacement surgery and aortic root enlargement with a Dacron patch.
Here are a few notes and observations:
I had an opening of .9 sq. cm aortic valve and after a cardiac cath., the dr.s notified me that I had an enlarged ascending aorta.
My first surgeon stated I would need a full sternotomy and suggested a mechanical valve due to my age.
I got a second opinion and some more tests from the Mayo clinic in Rochester since I live in Wisconsin.
Dr.'s and surgeon stated same procedure but I could choose either type of valve.
Got online and found this site and patients that saw Dr. Accola, and saw some videos of him as well.
Flew to Florida to see him and he stated he could do a hemi-sternotomy and repair the herniated aorta as well.
Made a date 2 weeks out and went home to get ready.
Making the date was one of the hardest things to do. In retrospect, should have done it earlier.
Bring along an IPOD with noise cancelling headphones. Include your favorite music. It definitely got me out of a dark place and gave me motivation to move.
Post Op.
I do not remember much in the ICU. No real recollection of the breathing tube being in. I was worried about that prior.
Up in recovery room - make sure to tell nurses if you need something. I didn't need much pain relief, just wanted to get a good nights sleep mostly.
Be prepared for whatever comes. We all recover differently!
At Home:
Recliner is awesome.
TV by bed is good as well.
Took me 4 weeks to get about 50% of my strength back.
Felt very week and figity on Xmas eve - went in to see Dr. and he said I had A-fib. Medication took care of that right away.
Spirometer helped immensely.
Some side affects of the surgery started disappearing after week 6/7. Numbness, dizziness, double vision, constantly tired.
CARDIAC REHAB HAS BEEN VERY IMPORTANT TO MY RECOVERY!! Get it going as soon as possible.
This week, week 8, I have started feeling really good at certain times of the day! (mostly in the a.m.) I didn't feel this good for a long time! I mean years! I am 49 so I always wrote it off as getting old, but now I know it was my valve.
I took tylenol pm to help me sleep - 1/2 of a Xanax to help me relax some nights and Zofran for the nausea. Zofran was great. I would recommend for everyone leaving the hospital.
Things I liked to eat in recovery: crackers, soup, ginger ale, ice water, ham sandwiches and now a days Subway.
Take a lot of video before, during and after. It helps to see the progress.
That's all that I can think of for now. Hope this helps those getting ready for the big day or in the recovery process. Feel free to ask me anything! Hope to post a picture of scar soon, just have to figure how to do it.
Peace
Jim Kelly-Evans Thanks, Mark, yes your post is very helpful and reassuring. Congratulations on your recovery.

Tammy Pilcher Mark, it's so good to hear from you! I was just thinking about you yesterday. I'm glad you're doing better! Sounds like Dr. Accola did the same surgery for you that he did for me. I also got the aortic root enlargement with the Dacron patch. Do you know the measurement of your ascending aorta pre op and did you go with a tissue valve? Another member of Team Accola, Melinda, and I are going to meet in person Friday. If you get back to Florida one day, maybe the three of us can get together. Take care heart brother!

Mark Schmitz Hi Tammy! My measurement aorta pre surgery was 4.6 cm pre-op. I also went with a bovine valve because I didn't want to be on blood thinners for the rest of my life and I didn't want to hear my heart "clicking" all the time. Coincidently, I am now on warafin to help prevent more TIA's but should be off it soon. Also, my heart pounding has finally subsided - just a little audible beating at night. I am planning a return appointment with Dr. Accola but don't know when. give my best to Melinda. Take a picture of you two and post it maybe?.

I'm going to take a picture of Melinda and me, but she will have to post it since I'm technically challenged!

Eleanor R For me it is now close to seven months, but I do remember the overall tiredness well. I could not understand how I could be so weak, when they had me sitting up and walking in the hospital right away, but it does take time for our bodies, no matter how young or fit, to recover. Like you, I had nausea a lot with the meds, and was just tired a lot the first weeks. Then things began to improve radically and all the symptoms went away. I wish you a continued recovery, you've done well, and hurrah for you for travelling to a surgeon that you felt would represent you best. I'm glad for you. Eleanor

Joan Napier Mark, I would definitely call your cardiologist ASAP, or even go to the ER if it happens again. Visual disturbances post HVS could possibly be a sign of a TIA (trans ischemic attack or mini stroke) and need to be checked out. Not to alarm you, as your double vision may or may not be caused by this. But only your doctor can determine if it is something of concern or something that will resolve as time goes on. I experienced sudden loss of vision in my right eye 3 weeks post-op. Lasted less than 5 minutes, but when I called my cardiologist he said to go directly to ER. I had a CT of my head to rule out stroke and hemorrhage. While those were ruled out, it was determined that I had a TIA in my right eye. I was already on coumadin (although my INR was too high at the time) and I was put on a daily baby aspirin also. In addition. I was seen by the ophthalmologist who said my eye is fine but agreed it was a TIA. I'm scheduled for a carotid doppler and echocardiogram to make sure there are no active sources of clots/ plaque anywhere. So bottom line, when in doubt. check it out!

Jim O'Brien Mark, I too have had some double vision. The first time happened about 10 days post op, was pretty severe, and lasted about 2 minutes. I have had it reoccur two more times but not as severely and always with the right eye only. With that, I have also had numbness in my left hand and foot post-op. When I mentioned this to my surgeon, they readmitted me to the hospital. They did an echo, an MRI, a carotid Doppler echocardiogram and some blood work thinking that I might have had a TIA. I also saw a neurologist briefly. Luckily, the tests all came back negative so not TIA. The neurologist thought the double vision must be an issue for my Ophthalmologist - I saw him and he didn't find anything. So, I still have to go back to the neurologist - he wants to do an EMG and a Nerve Conduction Study as he thinks the numbness may be Carpal Tunnel. Bottom line, I still have no answer for what caused my double vision or the numbness. I like the reference to the Foreigner album by the way!!!

Daniel Spurgeon I had some visual flashes beginning two weeks after OHS, and saw a neuro-ophthalmologist. He said it wasn't anything serious and was most likely minor spasms causing aura. It has been an interesting 19 days of my life, however I am feeling some progress to the positive. After having A-fib on Christmas Eve, my personal physician prescribed some new drugs to slow down my heart and raise my BP a little. He also put me on Warafin to help thin the blood. I felt better the next day! Although I do have some vision/focus issues since the surgery, it seems like it is getting better slowly. The nausea has subsided thank god and my weight has remained stable. Zofran did a great job for the nausea!
I really don't have a lot of pain. I never had to take a lot of pain pills in the hospital and none since I have been home. I guess I am lucky in that aspect. My incision was only 4.5" long so that may have had something to do with it. It looks only like a little scratch right now. Amazing work doc.
My biggest issue right now is being held captive in my house day in and day out. I do my breathing exercises and walks in the house for it is too cold to go outside. I get visitors every so often which also helps. I am going to have to find something to occupy my time and make me feel useful. My motivation is low, but lately I have been feeling better and stronger, so maybe I will figure something out.
Other issues: I still have a little numbness in my right heel and right shin. It has gone away a little recently. Has anyone else had this problem? Also, pain in my right arm on occasion.
I am going to take this on daily and let the healing take its course. I was too impatient at first and now realize that I cant force my way through this. Take care everyone and thanks for your support!!

10 days post op and trying to cope. It has been a difficult recovery. I don't have a good frame of mind right now so it is hard to remember, just a synopses: Day 4 I came "unglued". Medication gave me a stroke indication but thankfully it was not. I couldn't sleep unless I was knocked out with drugs, which made if hard coming down. The nausea has been non-stop. I have lost 20 lbs and feel absolutely drained - daily. My wife has been helping me with the recovery - without her I would be lost. I do make a little progress daily, but not as fast as others seem too. I don't mean to be a downer, but I felt people should know - Everybody Heals Differently! I will keep on keeping on.

Joan Napier Mark, I'm sorry to hear you've had such a rough time of it. It is different for each of us, but it is also true that as time passes, recovery gets easier and you will feel better. After all, OHS is a major trauma to your entire body, you are trying to regain equilibrium, and you are adjusting to new medications. It is common to have a decreased appetite, changes in our taste buds, sensitivity to smells, etc. Find foods that sound palatable, and stick with those for now. Ask your doc about meds for nausea. But hang in there! It is still so early in your recovery. Some of us have a few more challenges along the way. I had some bumps in the road including ongoing nausea, restlessness, and afib with 3 trips back to the ER in the first 3 weeks I was home. You are not alone! Realize it will get better, and try to go easy on yourself. I am now 6 weeks out, and have started cardiac rehab. I have energetic days and days of fatigue, but I am improving! You will too! The body is resilient, but each of us recover in our own way and in our own time.

Nancy D Praying for ease of pain and insomnia, lifting of your spirits and relief from nausea. It is a journey, and I found celebrating the wee baby steps forward were better for my frame of mind, as big steps took too long to show up. For me the loss of appetite was eased by cold fruits- grapes, oranges, apples, bananas which felt good going down and wasn't too heavy. Took me a bit to get on to the protein type foods, just had no appetite. Hang in there, your corner is approaching and soon you will turn that corner and look back only to see how far you have come! Heart surgery isn't for sissies!! You. CAN. Do. It!

Mark, hang in there. It WILL get better. I could not sleep in the hospital without major drugs either, and did not eat anything but applesauce right when I took pain meds to try and coat my stomach. I lucked out with no nausea, but they can give u something for that is my understanding. When your body is ready to turn the corner, I bet you will eat non stop. The chest tubes really bothered me and it was not until they were pulled out, could I actually eat comfortably. I also remember feeling "trapped" in this body that could not breathe normally, and was so terribly stiff. I wanted to "unzip" out of it and walk away so badly at times. I turned to meditation on u tube, anything to keep my mind completely focused on breathing, the present moment, gratitude, and faith that little by little, I would get stronger. And I did. I am almost at my 3rd month, huge turning point was one month for me, although each week the body got stronger. Keep doing the breathing spirometer several times a day, the oxygen feels great, and walk inside the house, even if it feels like the amt is little, it isn't. Keep us posted. You r going to get through this. You have a lot of support here, thanks for posting so we all know to think about you and send good vibes your way.

Hi there! This is Mark's wife, Kristen.
Just wanted to let all of you know that Mark's surgery went well. Dr Accola found that his aortic valve was congenitally bicuspid. He also found that the valve's circumference was small. Dr Accola thought it best to put in a bigger valve, so he cut some of the aorta to do that. No need to do any grafting of the aorta then.

Mark Schmitz I came across Dr. Accola from this great website, of course, and from the recommendation of both Tammy and Melinda. I watched the video you have of him, called the number and they gave me a consult time and date right away. Once my wife and I met the Dr. and the staff we really knew he would be doing it... He is very welcoming and put me at ease. It made me feel 100x better. He also liked the cheese I brought him. (We are from Wisconsin you know) I plan on bringing some for you guys as well!!

Adam Pick Hi Mark, Great to meet you and welcome to our community!!! Like you, I also needed my aortic valve replaced. Is your valve stenotic or regurgitant?
As you may already know, there are a lot of great surgeons and cardiac teams out there. Where do you live? Or, maybe that does not have an impact on your care selection process?
Going forward, I'm hopeful that the information and the people at this website will help you as you prepare for surgery.
If you need anything, please let me know.
Keep on tickin!

Laura Brase Hi Mark!
I had my aortic valve replaced 3 weeks ago yesterday. I live in Iowa and traveled to LaCrosse, WI for my surgery at Gundersen Lutheran. My surgeon was Prem Rabindranauth, MD, FACS, also known to his patients and colleagues as Dr. Rabindra. He was able to perform the hemi-sternotomy. He replaced my valve with pig tissue. I highly recommend at least having a few opinions from some places. Good Luck!!
Mark Schmitz Thanks Adam and Laura. Will look into the La Crosse Hospital.
