1 week away from mitral valve repair. I am anxious but not anywhere close to what I was 2 years ago when I had my aortic valve replaced. Speedy recovery to all on the other side and best of luck to all with upcoming surgeries.
Does anyone know how common it is to need 2 valves repaired/ replaced (aortic and mitral) within 2 years of each other. If you know any journals or websites that discuss this please let me know. Thanks.
Had aortic valve replacement in Jan 2016. Just found out today I need to have my mitral valve repaired or replaced. Can anyone recommend surgeons from NYC or Philly that do minimally invasive procedures. I loved my previous surgeon in NJ but want to weigh other options as I really dont want to have another sternotomy if I can help it.
On this day last year (Jan 12, 2016) I had open heart surgery to replace my bicuspid aortic valve. It was a tough recovery at first but after I felt a little better I wanted to so something significant before the one year anniversary.
I thought it would be awesome to run the WDW HALF marathon. I had officially never run more than a 5k. I trained hard for the half but it was cancelled due to weather and I was absolutely devastated. I could not believe this was going to be taken away from me.
Disney gave us the option to run a full marathon instead. With some hesitancy I decided to go for it! I am so glad I did! I finished my first half and full marathons in the same day! Jan 9, 2017 (5 days before the anniversary of my surgery) 5:27:13
I guess things do truly happen for a reason.
Our fraternity consists of very strong people. No matter where you are in this process know that you can fully recover and maybe even become stronger than you ever thought you could.
Best wishes to all of you having procedures this week.
This time last year I was freaking out about upcoming AV replacement surgery 1/12/16 and this year I am so excited about an upcoming half marathon on 1/7/17 in Disney World. I feel amazing! What a difference!
Happy Holidays and best wishes to all of you with upcoming surgeries or in post-op! You got this!
This week will be 7 months since my AV replacement. I have lost 30 lbs since the surgery and feel amazing. I am thinking of running a half marathon the week of my 1 year AVR anniversary. I am waiting to hear back from my cardiologist but do any of you know of any concerns I should be aware of?
Good luck to all of those having procedures this week.
Can't believe it has been 3 months since AV replacement.

I thought I would never get here. I have experienced so many emotions from pre- surgery through recovery. I have come so far in a short time. I did so well in cardiac rehab they cut me loose 6 weeks earlier than expected. On the last day I ran a mile in 10 mins.
Most importantly this process has made me realize what is important. I have become a much better dad and husband. My eyes are finally wide open for the first time in my life.
Good luck to all of you wherever you are in your journey. You will get through this hopefully mentally and physically stronger than before.
Had my first follow-up appointment today and Dr. is impressed with scar healing and overall recovery. ECG and blood pressure were great and pain is almost gone except for mornings. Still a bit tired but all in all I feel amazing.
I start cardiac rehabilitation next week. I hope and pray the progress continues.
To all in post-op keep fighting. You will get there soon. Best of luck for a speedy recovery. Also good luck to all of you that have procedures this week.
Day 3 post op for AVR. First 2 days were extremely tough. I feel great today and started walking regimine. Just found out I need to stay an extra day or 2 due to small bout of A-Fib. Sad about that but very excited about the future.
Ready as I'll ever be!
