Well, I haven’t visited this site for quite awhile. But, yesterday, I turned 60 and just felt incredibly thankful at how well I feel since my surgery which was in December if 2022. For anyone anticipating surgery, please know that feeling good is on the other side, even if it takes awhile. This group is so supportive. Thanks for all the encouragement and good luck to all!!!

Patsy Stewart I wear them, and they really help with the swelling. Don’t get the ones that are toeless. They’ll drive you insane! They also can rub a blister on the side of your foot/toes. I’ve never had a problem with the regular ones. I had PAD before the HF, so I have worn them for several years. In the summer, I just put them on with my dresses and shorts and act like it’s normal. The only person who has ever commented or laughed at me was my own MOM!! Lol! I try to laugh if off because my mom has dementia. It did kind of shock me though. Lol!! Good luck with your new footwear. Your feet and legs will probably feel better.

DeLois Tweedy I wear knee highs, a local cardiologist suggested them to keep my heart from working so hard. I can usually keep the edema controlled, but I know the knee highs help with this as well. Unlike Patsy, I like the toe less! I dislike my toes being confined, I don't even like to wear shoes! I do wear mine in the summer most of the time, with dresses and Capri pants. Like Patsy, I just act like it's all fashionable! Lol This attitude may have something to do with age - I turned 68 on Easter Sunday.
Angela Meletiadis I wore them for three weeks after surgery. In July. I'm glad to be done with them.
I started writing poetry to help me deal with my surgery and the aftermath. I want to share this poem of hope for all who are going through this journey.
I started writing poetry to help me deal with my surgery and the aftermath. I want to share this poem of hope for all who are going through this journey.
On Getting Better
It’s not all
Darkness
I’m remembering that now,
How it is to feel hope
And joy
Over daily events
Instead of always calculating
The days until
Or the days
Since.
Those sharp moments
Feel smoother
With the continual
Washing of waves
Over the top of them.
This is the kinder side of memory.
On other days,
My mind
Clings to scenes
That can make me
Shake
And when it does
I remind my eyes
To search for
Light,
Beauty,
Nature,
Places that calm.

Hello, my surgery was 12/23. My mitral valve leaflets were too thick for a solid repair, so after 30 minutes of trying, my wonderful surgeon, Saturo Osaki, at University of WI Hospital did a mechanical valve replacement. He is a super caring guy and came to see me 1-2 times a day, along with the PAs on his surgical staff. I had some Afib, which was scary and I even needed a blood transfusion. Things got better and I was discharged one week later on 12/30. BUT, the next day I started retaining urine and got really weird (delirious) and my husband had to call 911. I was readmitted through the ER. My mind and bladder cleared up but they were worried about possible infection and gave me a few days of IV antibiotics. Now, I came home for real on Jan. 6. I feel better every day and am up and around and doing as much for myself as possible. This is a very tough thing, but with the help of those around you, you can do it, just like I did!! Thanks for all the support. 😊❤️🩹💜

Well, my surgery was supposed to be 12/14 but at my pre op yesterday I was informed it was changed to 12/28 due to surgeon’s schedule. Now I realize I will be in the hospital during 2022 AND 2023 which might mean being charged two deductibles and two out of pocket charges which are not insignificant! Calls made to hospital billing office and insurance company, both of whom tell me they need to research the issue. As if the prospect of surgery and the reschedule wasn’t enough, now the financial red tape!!! So hoping I don’t have to wait until the first of the year. Anybody else ever run into this?

Patsy Stewart If I were going to have to pay 2 deductibles, I would wait until January to have the surgery. I say this only if it’s safe for you to wait. That would be my first question. Meeting this year’s deductible wouldn’t really benefit you, but meeting next years deductible at the first of the year would give you a whole year not to have to worry about meeting it again for this year. Sometimes we have other things that pop up after surgery that requires more medical attention. Meeting my deductible in January has always given me peace of mind for the year. I’ve been down this road, and it’s very stressful. Sending hugs and prayers your way.~❤️

Robert Miller Did you already meet your deductible for 2022? If not then I would try to push it out a few days into early 2023. I would assume it's safe as the surgeon didn't seem to have an issue pushing it out 2 weeks but of course check with him/her. If you already met your deductible then does your insurance offer council. My insurance assigned a case worker to me that helps with billing and other issues. In my case I already met my deductible from heart surgery earlier this year which is why I scheduled it for 12/14/22, i.e. same as your original date. Of course, there will still be all the follow-ups, medicine, home kit if I get a mechanical valve replacement, etc but hopefully I won't max it out in 2023.

Diane Pellowe Greg Lewis: my insurance charges me $2500 a day for the hospital up to $8000 per calendar year. In the US, people who are very poor can go on medicaid which covers everything. People who earn too much for medicaid need to pay for private insurance. The premiums, deductibles, etc. run the gamut. It’s a crazy system. It is the worst for people who earn too much for medicaid but not enough that they can afford all the copays and deductibles. This is why so many people go into medical bankruptcy.

Greg Lewis Thanks, Diane. So the minimum wage earner gets the shaft! Well, our system, isnt doing so great, after covid. They let so many people into the country, and didnt keep up with the hospitals and staffing. So now there are long waits. But it wont bankrupt anyone. Not sure what the perfect system is.

Question: I am diagnosed with severe mitral regurgitation and am waiting for my surgery to be scheduled. My ejection fraction is estimated to be 60%. I get tired on and off during the day. Is this from my regurgitation? Do you feel this way? Thx
George Gardopee Hi Diane. I had similar ejection fraction and severe mitral regurgitation. I never noticed anything unusual relative to getting tired during the day, but I am 70 and I may have just chalked it up to aging. People on this site report a wide range of experience with severe MR ranging no discernible symptoms to severe symptoms, so it’s really hard to tell if your fatigue is the result of MR or not.
An EF of 60% is very good, but because of the regurgitation the blood is not all going in the right direction. My EF dropped after surgery (to 50-55%) but this is pretty common. I’ll attach a link to a video that discusses this (coincidentally featuring the surgeon who repaired my valves). ... Read more

Susan Lynn Diane - You certainly can feel tired with mitral valve regurgitation. Your blood carries oxygen and when the valve isn't functioning properly, you are likely not getting enough. Regurgitation also makes your heart work harder. That combination could make you feel fatigued. Hang in there. Better days are ahead!

George Gardopee Just an added thought here - when I was trying to decide whether or not to proceed with surgery (being what I believed was asymptomatic) my cardiologist suggested having a stress echo. He thought it would conclusively demonstrate to the skeptic in me whether or not the leakage was affecting me. In the end I passed on the stress echo and went ahead with the surgery. If you have already decided to get your valve repaired it may be a moot point. Regarding Susan’s post - perhaps a home blood oxygen monitor? Maybe it would show reduced oxygen saturation when you feel run down? When you have the surgery that seems to be one of the primary devices that they use to monitor your heart’s function while you are in the ICU.

Kenneth Southard George - Thanks for providing that video on reduced ejection fraction. Just goes to show that when you think that you have absorbed all of the information on this site, there is still something you have not seen. Mine dropped as well from about 60 - 65 pre - surgery to about 55 - 60 post-surgery. There is also a lot of misinformation out on the internet that assumes that anything below 60 is borderline and anything below 55 is heart failure. I can see how this can cause someone to panic when they see they have dropped to around 50 - 55.
