Hi Diane , I hope that you are okay . You are doing really well Diane ! Post op , while I was on the ward , I thought that there had been a fire on the ward . There wasn āt ! I was also very disoriented one evening and phoned my husband to find out what was real and what was in my imagination . It was the analgesics that were affecting me . After those worrying incidents , I just took paracetamol for pain control . My emergency surgery was during the covid times when we weren't allowed visitors . We weren't able to leave the ward unless it was to be discharged . I had been in hospital for five weeks . When I went home , it felt amazing ! Fresh air , family and freedom

Rita Savelis So sorry to hear about what you are going through Catriona. You may have to stay on diuretics longer to get rid of the fluid in your body, which is so common after surgery. Getting your INR stable takes some time, perhaps weeks/months. And it will go up and down but your body will get used to it and then it will be easier to get to your target rate. My target rate is 3 to 4.5 (I have 2 mechanical valves). I worried so much about anticoagulants for the first year, but eventually my stress and worry subsided.

I also put on a tremendous amount of weight in hospital following aortic valve replacement and pacemaker. It was due to water retention and made me look like Michelin Man! It was so bad I could barely flex my joints and it took months to get rid of, causing me to become quite depressed.

Waiting was definitely the hardest part. Every step of the process of OHS was completely doable. Think positive thoughts and take it one day at a time. You'll be surprised how fast recovery goes. You'll be back to enjoying life in no time!

Robert Miller Your surgery day is the same as my second surgery. I don't want to downplay the surgery as it is pretty significant. Having said that, you will have doctors and nurses around you 24/7 so you are in pretty safe hands and they can react within seconds if something doesn't go quite as planned. The hard part for me was after the surgery, i.e. all those wires and tubes, having to use a commode, not being able to shower, etc. It's no fun but it's just a few days. When you get back home make sure you wear your heart hugger, get a wedge pillow so you can easier get in and out of bed, if you have a couch that can recline use that for the first week or so to sleep, keep a table/chair close by for water, phone, etc. Go for walks at least 1-2 times a day. Do you breathing exercises (not the coughing exercises).
