It has been 8 weeks since Rick's aortic valve replacement. He had a mini sternotomy.
His resting heart rate was 99 - 104 BPM in hospital. It did not slow down when he returned home. Two weeks ago his resting heart rate was 119 BPM. I arranged a call with his surgeon and we were in agreement that his Metoprolol should be increased to to pre-op dosage. His new Cardioligist had reduced it in half. His heart rate really hasn't slowed down that much. It's still in the 90s. Has anyone else had this issue?
Additionally, Rick doesn't feel like walking or doing anything. He is tired all of the time.

Rob Wigley My resting heart rate stayed in the 90's for almost a year, and now, 18 months post-op, it's in the mid 70's most of the time. My heart just needed a bit of time to quit freaking out I guess. It was a bit enlarged and is almost back to a normal size. I don't think this should be much of a concern........but I understand why you are! Oh, and yeah, I was tired for months and months and months. Naps were my best friend, but that got better, especially after I got off the meds (about a year after surgery). Naps rock......
Best to you guys....

Tim Goff my pre op rate was always very low 60-70. post surgery in the hospital it was 80, then at home rose to 125-140 with tachychardia. 200 mg metropol was of no use. about 10 days ago I was put on 400mg amiodarone with the 200 metropol which did nothing for a week (115). The Amiodarone was moved up to 600 and the metropolol down to 100. After 5 days I dropped into the 80's for the firs time in over a month so the amiodarone was cut to 400 and at the moment I am in the mid to high 70's. for me I think metropolol is not too helpful and the amiodarone is a nasty drug, working, but I want to get off of it ASAP. I hope that Rick is able to get this under control soon. You have to be pushy with the docs to get changes made sometimes--- wish you luck

Bill Cherry My resting heart rate was also high after AVR. I left the hospital with no medications other than pain, so it remained in low 110s. I started phase 2 cardiac rehab after 3 weeks post op. I just graduated from 12 weeks of the rehab. , 36 sessions. At the beginning of rehab, I would recover to about 112 bpm, at the end I was recovering to about 85 bpm. At home resting I am usually in the 60s; so I think exercise helps. I'm now at 16 weeks post op and starting phase 3 cardiac rehab.

Debra Comstock Mahalo nui loa (thank you very much) for all of your input. I am definitely a squeaky wheel. Rick has an appointment with his PCP who is an Internal Medicine physician next Tuesday. I emailed him today with Rick's vitals for the week. It also pays to have the doctor's nurse as your friend. I will be calling his surgeon on Monday because I did not hear from him today regarding his echocardiogram. I feel so much better after reading all of your posts.

Rick is still experiencing an elevated heart rate. His resting heart rate has always been high but within normal limits. His heart rate has been between 99 and 104 BPM since his AVR. When he went on a short walk today it went up to 124 and he was very winded. They have slowly upped his beta blockers to slow his heart, but they are being very careful because his BP was low. They are also monitoring his glucose level. The cardiothoracic surgeon that was on call today said his heart sounded really good and the murmur was gone. He also removed the wires in his chest today. I sure hope they get his heart rate and blood pressure stabilized soon.
Debra Comstock I almost forgot, he got to take a shower today!

Lewis Garlisi I had similar heart rates, with lower BP, for a few weeks post surgery. I was told not to worry, that it's not uncommon after valve replacements, particularly if his hemoglobin is low (which it often is after this type of surgery). After my blood counts went up and they changed my beta blocker, the rate went down considerably - about 4 weeks post op. Hope that helps.

Lenore Mitchell I also had tachycardia (fast heart rate) esp for a few days post op, and was told it's very common because the heart muscle is "irritated." I guess our hearts aren't that fond of being messed with! They told me it may take up to 3 months for the heart to return to normal. I'm on a beta blocker too (metroprolol - which is one of them). Good luck.

Bob M My AVR was on December 10, and my rest heart rate has been up over 90 compared to 80 before my surgery. The past 3 days, it reduced below 90. I guess it takes time. Other than that, ECHO looks good. I'm not worried about it.

Nancy D I had a mitral valve replacement and my pre surgery heart rate was in the 70's and post was over 90 for the first several months, which I was told was quite normal as the heart adjusts. I also has lower b/p pre op in the 108/60 range and that dropped too after surgery and was weak and light headed for a while. Have to still make sure I get enough fluids.....So it may take longer than you think it should to settle in. He is watched closely, and they will fine tune it as needed. Take good care of him and you both!

Debra Comstock Rick's heart rate has dropped to 85 BPM and his blood pressure is up, which is fantastic! He is blowing 2500 in his spirometer today. We went on several walks and his heart rate did not increase too much. He also was not winded. Our bodies are amazing! Thank you all so much for your input.

The surgery went very well. I didn't get to see him in recovery but I saw him in the Coronary Care Unit. Wow it was unnerving to see him on a respirator and all those drainage tubes, along with all the monitors and IVs. He opened his eyes and slowly was awakening. He wanted me to go to the hotel and get some rest. And I wanted him to rest and sleep. I think they took out his breathing tube tonight. His color was good and he already had his sense of humor. I will see him tomorrow morning.

I finally received the pre-op info from kaiser on Monday. I called the kaiser neighbor islands travel desk and I cannot book our flight and hotel because the actual surgery is not posted yet. I was told if the surgery doesn't show up online by Thursday morning to call again. I will be calling again tomorrow morning. Rick's surgery is scheduled for next Wednesday.

Ed Smith Debra, if Rick only needs valve replacement, ask the surgeon about a partial or "mini" sternotomy, meaning the sternum isn't cut all the way down and the valve is accessed from above. The partial cut of the sternum makes for a speedier recovery, less pain, etc. Good luck with his upcoming surgery. Sometimes I think the anticipation is the worst part, for the loved ones as well as the patient.

i woke up last night in a panic over my husband's pending aortic valve replacement. I calmed myself down and went back to sleep. I am really frustrated because we only know the date and the surgeon. I have no idea of the costs and we don't have our airline tickets yet. We fly in one day early for pre-op tests. The hotel is covered only one night. I had to find my own accommodations for the duration of Rick being in the hospital. Thank goodness for Marriott Reward points! We live on Kauai AKA the fly or die island. Surgery is on Oahu. I do not like being left in the dark. I will call the scheduling nurse again on Monday. Last Monday she had three patients ahead of my husband to do paperwork. She called last Wednesday and said his surgery had been moved up a day. I cannot believe this information has not been forthcoming. I will be as sweet as pie and on Monday and get the info I need. It's not like we're driving down the street to the hospital. I have to get a house sitter and make other arrangements. Grrrrrrrr!

Peggy Pauley Debra, I know my husband is feeling the same way you are. Even though I am the one having surgery I know how concerned he is for me and my upcoming surgery. While we are also traveling about 4 1/2 hours to the hospital we are not having to worry about a hotel for my husband as the hospital has guest housing for patient's families. Will be praying for you both and that you are able to work out all the fine details. God speed!

Chris Niederhaus Debra, my wife is six months post surgery for her aortic valve replacement surgery. We walk three miles almost every day, she is back to the gym and her spin classes. Life with our 10 and 12 year old is back to normal. I was scared before the surgery as to my role in recovery, you will find that role very fulfilling. My wife and I have never been closer and I now truly appreciate each and every moment I spend with my family. Please know your love and support for your husband will be repaid ten fold upon his recovery. He will recover amazingly quickly with your help and before you know it all will be back to "normal." all the best to both of you!
