Hi all! It’s been a while. I am coming up in my 5 year anniversary of my mitral valve replacement with a bovine valve. I first want to say I wish you all a quick recovery with all of you that are having or had surgery. Second I wanted to ask some opinions. I work in the Emergency Room and have been dealing with Covid patients since March. This week the hospital wants to vaccinate us front line workers. Should I get it done? Have any of you heard anything about the vaccine and heart valve replacement? I am just nervous. I do not want covid and if this will prevent it I am all for it but need some opinions from people like me with heart valve surgery . If you were me what would you do?
Shannon Gray Thinking of you. I would love to know thoughts too.

Marie Myers I am a 3+ year AVR (tissue valve) and a CRNA who is still working, albeit only 1 day a week. I intend on getting the vaccine, mostly because I am 66, and therefore more at risk for the virus. Because you work in the ER, you are surely more exposed. What does your cardiologist/internal medicine doc say?

Travis Ederer I am 47, have bav disease with regurgitation but haven’t hit the replacement point yet. I work in emergency services as a chief officer for a fire department and have been a paramedic for 21 years. I will accept the vaccine when it is offered. I am not worried about it personally, but I get exposed and there are lots of others in my life that I could be exposing as well. I’ll also continue wearing a mask when appropriate until there is evidence of its global effect.
Besides, I figure any extra arm I grow will come in handy.

First off its been a while since I have been on and I wanted to send my prayers with all the people with upcoming surgeries and bless the hands of the doctor's performing them.
Today, it's been almost 10 months since
my name has been on that list. I remember seeing it there and I thought omg this could be my last day here on earth, omg this is absolutely crazy me 38 years old needing heart surgery. To those of you whom I have not met yet on here. I was pregnant when I found out I had rhematic heart disease. My baby was taken 8 weeks early due to my pulmonary edema and congestive heart failure. Delivery was good and I have a healthy 14 month old now who is into everything lol. I gave birth in August of 2015 and they scheduled my heart surgery for Jan 25 2016 to give my body a rest from running to circulatory sysytems.
Getting back to that dreadful, terrifying day seeing my name on the upcoming surgery dates was surreal to me. The emotions that you encounter only my fellow peers of this group would understand.
Today I had an echo done to see how my heart is doing after my mitral valve replacement. I opted for a bovine valve. The thought of Coumadin terrified me. I am 38 an active motocross rider, mom of 3 who is constantly on the go. Can't even remember what I did with my car keys nevermore take a pill on time everyday. So yes I did my research I asked questions and went against my surgeons advice and opted for a bovine. My surgeon who I must add saved my life and he will forever be in my debt. I spoke with him numerous amounts of times regarding mechanical and bovine. I don't know how long this valve will last but I am prepared to do this again to live a normal life a life with no pills and needle sticks. Normal for me. I am happy with my choice and confident in my Edward's sciences bovine valve. So back to my echo that I had today. It was the same woman who performed my first echo when I was pregnant and feeling so awful. When she was doing the test it was so quiet all you could hear was the pressing and scrolling of the ultrasound machine. My nerves were going crazy anxiety through the roof. All I could think about was what if the valve failed already, what If another valve went bad. So many what ifs. The test came to an end and she looked at me and said I can't believe the transformation your heart went to. Your heart was so enlarged last time and now it looks completely normal and your valve looks amazing! I just started to cry. Thank you Jesus after all I have been through, almost loosing my baby, and my life I finally received good news!
So to all the people who are scheduled for surgery I will speak to you on the other side of your new life. The day I received my new valve marks a new birthday for me and after you receive your new valve it will be a birthday a new chapter in your book. I pray for all of you. Thanks for listening and God bless.

I never got the chance to loose the baby weight after my son because of all my heart issues so I was so excited to hear this. I have to say I feel good. A few days ago I had pvcs when resting so I called the Dr and today I have a Holter monitor for 24 hours. Didn't miss this thing but it's only for 24 hours. Besides this everything is going well and I pray all of you are doing well also. For those going into surgery you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I am at ease with my valve choice and I can say I am happy I went with a bovine vs mechanical. I finally after 1 year of hell feel I am getting my life back and I couldn't be happier!!! Next is to loose these 15 lbs so I can get back down to my weight before baby!

So yesterday went for echo blood work and chest xray. Iron levels are improving little fluid around my lungs but they are not worried about it. I am dehydrated from the lasix. Well in the echo I seen my new valve in action but apparently the cardiologist had some concerns. From the echo it looks like there is an obstruction from my new valve to my aortic valve. Basically it looks like the two poles (not sure how to explain this ) it's sewn into are longer and by the echo looks like it's obstructing the blood flow from my aortic valve. So they called my surgeon and he said during the surgery they used a tee and the echo view is not accurate and there is no obstructuon. So needless to say I was freaking out. I see him March 8th so I will have alot of questions. My cardiologist said they may do another tee to confirm but my surgeon said it fine had anyone else had this happen?

HI Cathy, that is so scary. I had a scare where the echo showed a high velocity rating for a new valve. My cardiologist thought I had a clot and sent me to have 4D CT scan and the CT showed my valve working beautifully. Needless to say, I think the echo has a standard error of measurement. The TEE is much more accurate. Best wishes to you and I hope all is ok!

Gail Magnus Cathy I would FREAK, too if I were u. Sounds like a false alarm thank goodness. I'll be going a week from today to have everything you had done yesterday. Curious and nervous at the same time! My hematocrit was 23 when I left the hospital so I'm anemic, too. I went home on Lasix and potassium, but only took it 1 day after I left the hospital. I lost all my fluid retention in my ankles/feet. So I called and asked if I could stop them. I was told that it was OK to hold it until I see my surgeon on 2/18.

Sorry to hear about fluid (and dehydration) around your Lungs, is the Lasix working for that? How long will you be on Lasix+did they detect the fluid build up from an Echo? Keep up the fluids still. I find Hydralyte (comes in flavoured ice blocks, drinks, dissolvable tablets here) helps me alot! As long as your valves are okay. I was told I couldn't have a tissue valve, as it would push back into my Aortic Valve causing obstruction of blood flow. Of course you would've been freaking out, your health is most important. How are your Iron levels now? I just found out you have a cow valve 🐮 are you glad you choose a cow valve? 😊
All the best wishes,

Cathy Slipski Emily they found the fluid around my lungs through a chest xray. I guess they said it's no change since I left the hospital. Since I am dehydrated they want me to stop the lasik. I am not swollen or retaining fluid anymore. As far as the valve I did go with a cow valve but from the echo it looks like an obstructuon from the struts so it looks like blood flow is limited. According to my surgeon the tee shows that it is fine otherwise the would of never closed me up. The tee is a better picture. I trust my surgeon I see him March 8 and will discuss this more. How are you doing? Hope all is well.

Kate Watson Hey Cathy, I wanted to mention that shortness of breath is also a symptom of anemia because if you don't have enough hemoglobin carrying red blood cells it makes your heart work harder to get oxygen rich blood circulating. Are you taking iron supplements at all? Depending on how low it is, you may want to supplement or need an iron infusion but would check with your dr. Try to get lots of iron rich foods into your diet. If you are a meat eater, beef and liver are the best sources, poultry and fish are good sources too. Also iron is best absorbed with foods high in Vitamin C. Sorry that's the dietitian in me talking :) But I think it's important to treat if it's still low because it will help your recovery process.

Michael Meyer Cathy: It will take a couple of weeks. The pain medications dulled my ability to be sharp assuming I was sharp to begin with :). I slept on my left side with lots of pillows, behind my back, between legs, whatever was most comfortable. I mostly took the narcotics at night. Be sure not to undermedicate as there is some pain involved. I had the same experience as Jacqueline about three weeks before subsiding and to stop taking the narcotics.
I would encourage you to visualize your recovery as a journey, off the meds, eating normal, walking goals, naps/day, rehab started, rehab graduation. We all talk about how mortality is low 1-2%. You just had major surgery whether minimally invasive or not, give yourself some time you are the beginning of the healing process and people are all different.

Cathy Slipski Than you Michael. When you laid on your left side did you have lots of discomfort on the right like a pulling sensation?
I'm so sorry to hear that you are experiencing so much pain. I feel for you friend. It is not easy. Be patient and gentle with yourself. You just underwent "major" surgery even if it was minimally invasive. My cardiologist keeps reminding me that "there's nothing minimally invasive about heart surgery!" Now that I am about at the 12 week post op mark...I definitely realize that healing takes time no matter how they get to your heart. It seems to me that the people who bounce right back are exceptions not the norm (at least this is what the med professionals keep telling me now post-surgery). It makes it a bit frustrating for those of us who went into the procedure thinking that we would be right back to "normal" in a couple weeks. It really is a process....but it will get better....
As far as the sweats/freezing goes. They told me that this is the result of the pain meds. I had terrible night sweats! When I went for my 6 week post op check I told my cardio about it. He immediately ran all sorts of tests to rule out infection. I would suggest making your cardiologist aware of your night sweats and chills now. They will want to know if you are running a fever...even a low grade one. This will determine what course of action they take...if anything. If they persist after you are off your pain meds, I would call them again. (This is just a suggestion. Don't be afraid to call your surgeon/cardiologist when you are concerned...that's what they are there for :-) When I posted about night sweats most that responded said they experienced them early on after surgery but they eventually went away. Mine stopped at about the 6-8 week mark. I am 50 though and so my hormones are all out of wack! This may have contributed to length of mine....not sure.
It took me about a month before I was comfortable sleeping on my left side. I don't know if this might be helpful for you but I used several feather/down pillows...two behind my head and one on each side so I was kind of wedged in on all sides. When I got out of bed I would hug the pillow (queen size) and roll out of the bed.
Speaking/thinking.....again....pain meds....surgery....all this stuff slows the body and brain down. I asked my family to be patient with me because I could not think or move as quickly as I did pre-op when I first got home (and that's a gross understatement!). You've been through so much...give yourself time....
As far as the "real you" coming back.....I'm sure this is different for everyone. Some people breeze through heart surgery and for others, it takes more time. I am in the latter group...so I am still working on it....like I mentioned earlier...healing is a process. Hang in there...it really will get better....we are all here for you.
Your heart sister,
Jacqueline

Jacqueline Cook Cathy...I know you asked Michael this question....so I hope you and Michael don't mind me responding as well...but I think that the pulling sensation you are experiencing on your right side when you lay on your left could have to do with the weight of your right breast. This is why I was not able to lay on my left side for the first month or so. Even then, I wedged the pillow right down the middle of my chest so my right breast had no where to go (if that makes sense). I am not very busty but I still had this issue. Also, I started sleeping in tank tops with a built in shelf bra for a little bit of support. Hope this helps.

Jacqueline you may be right about the pulling sensation I get when I try to lay on my side. I cannot get comfortable at all! It's just so frustrating. When I lay down it hurts to breathe sometime it's like a sharp pain in the back of my throat. I know all this complaining I am sorry I just need to vent today it's one of those days. Jacqueline Cook No need to apologize. That's what we are here for Cathy. I don't mean to sound "directive"....just trying to help....but if at any time you do not feel quite "right" make sure you call your cardiologist. Perhaps you should ask them about your difficulty breathing and the sharp pain in the back of your throat. It can never hurt to error on the extra cautious side especially since you're only 9 days out from surgery. My thoughts, prayers are with you! Hugs!

It sounds like you are battling esp with the pain, it is normal and I will try my best to give you advice (I too only went through it couple of days ago). Give yourself time to heal. Cardiac Rehab is a great resource not only providing information on safe exercise but also other areas such as wound care. Have you raised these concerns with your Surgeon, Nurse or Doctor? Have they tried oxygen mask to help with the breathing? Make sure you keep moving and coughing abit to help avoid chest infections. The Nurses here are constantly getting me hot blankets because of how freezing I feel! Try heat pack, they help with pain+temperature, but if your temp goes up you may need Panadol. ❄ Is it Winter where you are? I send my prayers and well wishes to you. Take care Heart Sister 💗

Jacqueline Cook Hi Cathy. Glad to hear you are home. I had minimally invasive robotic mitral valve repair. I was sore too and it was especially difficult to get out of and into bed. Stay up on your pain meds. Don't try to tough it out and wait longer periods than what your Dr has prescribed. My worst soreness lasted a couple of weeks. It was week 3 before I got off the heaviest pain meds (as much as I wanted to ween myself off sooner). But everyone is different. Here to support you through it!

Nancy D Just the moving home is a huge activity that knocked me back for a few days.
Be gentle with yourself, and know that rest is important, deep breathing and minimal walking in the house the first few days. To say even your hair hurts is an understatement.
Take your meds- I alternated the pain medication and Tylenol extra strength in between, and slept in my recliner for the first while. The numbness in the right breast takes a while to go away- the nerves need time to regenerate, as did it in my left thigh from the groin access to the bypass machine.
Take it easy and eat as well as you can- I could only do fresh fruit and yogurt for the first few days..nothing else tasted good.
It WILL get better!! I promise.

Emily Rowley Wow you are home Cathy! How long were you in Hospital for? I know I have soreness on my right pectin muscle mainly, I was told because I laid on my side and try doing exercises to both side of the body not just one. But with bruising, I would definitely get that checked out by a Doctor asap. Were their tubes on that side? This may contribute.
Really minimal invasive?

Congrats on being home, Cathy. I felt that is where I really healed. I remember being knocked out with any activity that first week home. I also think the meds they sent me home with was doing this as well. I had a hard time regulating my internal temperature as my blood pressure was wacky. That all evened out eventually. I wonder with your AV block if that was making recovery harder (or making you more worn out)? That first week home, I did everything in my recliner: sleep, eat, play on computer, watch television. I would get up to go to the bathroom or to walk periodically. Each day I felt stronger and was able to do more. My chest was swollen and uncomfortable for several weeks. My right breast and chest muscles get swollen now if I lift too much (or when working out a little harder). Be patient with yourself. I hope you feel better soon. Now at 8 weeks, I am easily sleeping in my bed on my side without problems. I can lift most everything in my normal daily activity (except my 50 lb 6 year old). Make sure to update your surgeon if things are off course for you.

Liz Burroughs Hi Cathy, I'm glad that you're home again! I had a minimally invasive MV repair three months ago. I was very sore also and it was hard getting in & out of bed. That slowly got better & I was finally able to sleep comfortably without pain meds. I was very tired so I spent most of my days resting. This gets better with time & your energy level will improve. I'm going to cardiac rehab & I exercise on bikes, rower, & treadmill for a total of 40 minutes. I'm also lifting weights (just 2 lbs. each) & I can now lift my arm over my head without any problems. I still have some numbness but I'm hoping it will go away eventually. Be patient with yourself. You will heal & you will feel better. We're all here for you. I'll be praying for you. Take care. Liz

Lynne Jeffreys Hi Cathy, keep your chin up it will get better! I never had a heart block but it will be better. I had my bicuspid aortic valve replaced Aug 11,2015 through a mini-thoracotomy (between 2-3 ribs). I also had the sutureless Perceval tissue valve used. This was done in London, Ontario Canada. Dr. Michael Chu.This surgery was not available to me 4 years ago nor was the valve so things in heart surgery are changing in leaps and bounds. I sometimes still get sharp shooting pain from the tissues healing. They said it would be about 6 months. I know the doctors in general say it is easier on the patients but you still have recovery and not everyone recovers the same way. I'm glad when I saw him after 8 weeks that he told me I could have these pains for 6 months. I had been having this so now I knew I didn't have to worry what it was from. He said as you use the chest muscles they will hurt but everyday is better. I also have some nerve irritation which has made the inner thigh area numb and sore. It's from the tubing they use in the femoral artery for the bypass machines. It sometimes can cause this and I'm a small person too so that could be why. It may take a year he said as nerves heal slower but it has improved a lot. I'm in cardio rehab now and we start the weight part in 3 weeks, so I'll be interested to see how that goes with the incision area. It is a very small incision on me about 2 1/2 inches. The biggest thing I found that bothered me was the severe fatigue. I was told that once the valve was in you will feel so much better and have more energy. After 1 month of not feeling any energy not even a wee bit I was also having palpitations, so they increased the medication and that made it worse. Finally, they dropped the medication (metoprolol ) in half and that made the difference. In 2 days I had that spurt of energy I was expecting. I'm on the drug till the heart and chest fully heal (6 months-1 year) then off. I do take aspirin 81mg daily too. Just to give you an idea of what may come in the weeks ahead.

Judy Freeman Cathy I've been focusing on the future beyond surgery. That worked for me through another surgery several years ago. I just remember how quickly time went by from last week, a month ago, a year ago, and remind myself that this will be behind me soon. Then remind myself that this isn't a surgery that I have a choice over, it's one that I have to have so there's only one choice there and that choice was made for me. Then I remember that my surgeon is one of the best, that everyone on his team is great and that the odds are in our favor. It's a serious surgery but because of the number of times it's been done, the fact that techniques have been perfected and all precautions are being taken to ensure a great outcome, that everything is going to be ok. Then if that doesn't work find some relaxation tapes and focus on a place that your enjoy. And if that doesn't work, cal your doc and see if he can prescribe something to relax you. But remember you're young and that's in your favor. Think of all the others that have already had this surgery and remember that time will fly by and suddenly it will be over and you'll look up and you'll be in cardiac rehab. Hang in there. Everything is going to be great.

Melinda Queliz I am the exact same way. I have started with a counselor and that is helping to deal with my emotions, I have also gotten nerve medication from my PCP for the days where it just feels like too much to handle (it is not taken daily the type I am on) and I don't know your relationship with God but pray, pray, pray and ask God for peace and comfort. I am getting to the point to where I can think of the surgery and not end up in tears. Of couse I am scared and I am a single mom to a 7 year old but I know that God has brought me this far in life he isn't going to drop me now. I hope you find peace soon.

Sophia Ridley How you are feeling is perfectly natural and we've all had similar experiences. I welled up at anything that pulled the heart strings (charities did very well out of me this Christmas!) and when I thought of my situation. I did actually feel like the tension had been released after crying. I remember post surgery that I wanted that release and I couldn't, the tears came the next day and I felt better.
I knew that if I didn't have the surgery my quality of life would diminish rapidly so I kept hold of what the fixed valve was going to bring me... I couldn't take the girls to the park and push the swings - I will be able to. I couldn't chase them through a soft play maze - I will, I'm sure that you'll have 100s of examples.
You have all of us virtually holding your hand.

Meredith Bray Aim for that feeling of relief when you first open your eyes after the surgery.
Before my surgery if I wasn't busy doing something or making a list of things to do, I was crying. So make some lists. Make a list of activities you can't wait to do! A list of places to go for a walk after you get home. A list of your favorite foods so when the (church) ladies brigade asks what you like you'll be able to tell them.
I don't think I've had a serious crying jag since I had the surgery.
Don't think of us as brave. Each and every one of us was just as scared as you are. You're gonna have a great story soon, too.

Sophia Ridley Paul - thank you. That's very kind, you'll be supporting another before you know it. Keep strong as that's how it does feel - I had immense relief once I got back to the ward that the surgery was over. We are all the same, just some a little further on the journey.
I had a vivid dream before my surgery... I was walking with a group through well lit wide tunnels, we were chatting not hurrying but there was great support and camaraderie, it was like a simple maze. Sometimes we split up and we had to turn back but no one was frightened as we knew we would get out. We came to a large glittery cavern and there was a stair well that went up and up for ever. I looked at it and thought there was no way I could climb that. And as I thought this, a shiny escalator grew out of the ground straight to the large welcoming opening at the top into bright daylight (just like Canary Wharf tube station). I was relieved and woke. I have remembered this dream, and I've mentally jumped on that escalator when those stairs look too tough and as I do I see others are doing the same :)

Well, you are normal. :) I was completely freaked out before surgery. The idea of something happening to me was unbearable (to me and later I found out how scared my husband was). I did talk to my kids about my surgery and wrote them sweet notes to read while I was in surgery. We made "hug" pillows so they could hug me while I was in the hospital and I could "hug" them back. They said they used them. This site helped me with my sanity. You will wake up after surgery and will be surprised that it wasn't as bad as you built it up to be in your mind. Cathy Slipski I appreciate all of these kind words to help ease my anxiety. I just had another melt down which was the norm today. I have known about this surgery for months and this waiting game has taken such a toll on my mind. I have all these thoughts going through my head like this is my last days here with my kids and it's killing me. I even was gping to cancel my surgery but I know the definate outcome if I do that. It was just a thought. I am terrified I have never in my life been so terrified of the unknown. I worry so much about my children and how the heck they would be able to go on without me. Like I have said I know the odds are in my favor but I just can't help to think this way and I wish o could just stop for just a minute so I can catch my breath. Before my finance now I was a single mom to my 2 older children who are 6 and 10 now I have been there only parent for so long and my kids are terrified. My daughter told me mommy I don't want you to go I don't want you to die. How do I say goodbye to my kids the night before my surgery and have them be ok when they are so scared? I am trying so hard to be strong but today has been such an emotional Rollercoaster. I have my fiance who is great and between him and my parents we have a plan in place for my 3 kids. I just want this to be over and wish I was waking up on the side of recovery already. I just feel so overwhelmed right now and I know I'm rambling on but it feels better to let it out. They were like, mama you can't change your mind because you need to have this done. My kids are older 19,20, & 22 so they understand things better. They said mama you just have the surgery and we will pray that God make it alright. At that point, I knew they were OK with it. I prayed and left my life in the hands of God. He is a miracle worker!!

Christine Oliva Cathy it is natural to be concerned even if the odds are In your favor. It is good to keep busy but don't forget to reach out to people (like you did here) and to those in your home. A friend, relative, spouse who can give you that physical hug. They may not know what to say, but just that contact can soothe the spirit. As things get completed you may find a sense of peace will take over. Two days before my surgery it came over me. I had prepared as best I could, now it was up someone other than me and it was okay. Maybe you are like me, very driven and "A" type who likes to lead, well guess what we need to trust in others for a bit. It will be okay, but I understand you need to believe it. If you can it will make your recovery easier and probably faster which is awesome if you are a type "A".

So the last couple of days I have been back and forth with the decision of participating in this trial valve for my bovine tissue valve. So when I went on Monday the woman could not answer any of my questions. She told me she would get back to me. The following day I spoke to her and I asked questions such as: How many people are participating? How long has this trial been active? Has there been any complications? The answers I received I was not comfortable with. First there is only 58 people participants as of now. There has been 12 people with complications but deemed the valve had nothing to do with it. This trial has been going on since December 2012. From the answers I received I do not feel comfortable with signing on the dotted line. I opted not to participate. If anyone wanted to look up this trial this is the website they gave me which really doesn't say much. Www.clinicaltrials.gov. the trial is being run by Edward Sciences and it's called the Edwards pericardial aortic and mitral bioprostheses with a new tissue treatment platform ..Commence trial. Anyone have any thoughts as to this? The while trial is based on not soaking the tissue valve in the solution and no sterilization before inplantanting it.

Emily Rowley She could not confidently answer your question upfront+you do not feel comfortable with the information received-I personally wouldn't go ahead with this procedure especially when no sterilization is performed not only causing the body to reject it, but also gaining serious infections. It would be like the Surgeons didn't wash their hands thoroughly then didn't sterilize the tools they use on multiple patients and using them in your body 😩 After all it is part of your heart-we only get one very precious heart! ♥

So today I was contacted by my surgeons office. They told me since I am now getting a tissue valve I am a candidate to participate in the Commence Trial run by Edward Sciences. What they are doing is taking the valve and instead of soaking it in a solution it is not. I really do not know much they would like me to meet with the trial people on Monday. Apparently they are trying to design a tissue valve that lasts longer. My question is would any of you consider this ? Now once again I I have to make another decision.

It won't hurt to listen and then go with your gut feeling about it. You will receive an informed consent that will list all expected risks as well as what you may be responsible for as far as follow up visits and such.
Sometimes when they try new things (and it is scary on you) progress is achieved.
I don't know anything about this trial at all but as I said might be a good idea just to listen.
You always have right to say no.
Hope this helps.

Patricia Garcia That is a tough decision to make, especially since there is no evidence yet of the success rate and the longevity of this procedure. You would have to research everything that you can on it and talk to your surgeon. Only you can make this decision so like Mark said you have to go with your gut feeling on it. Everyone on here seems to be divided on mechanical or tissue valve. I had all 3, repair, porcine and now a mechanical valve. Nothing can be 100 percent and our bodies are different, which effects these valves in different ways. Talk with your loved ones and I am sure you will make the right decision for you.

Enrique K Hello Cathy, let me give you my personal opinion. I would be very cautious you are talking about your heart the most important muscle in your body. You need to review the whole data structure of the valve and longevity. I would ask yourself why you would want to participate in this trial. If the proposed trial valve has some real benefit to you, then by all means, go with it. If it is just "we think it will last longer" then I might tend toward being conservative and choosing one of the valves (porcine or bovine) that has been in use for a few years and has some history data. I wish you the best of luck with your decision.
Emily Rowley I thought the solution was to sterilize (so your body won't reject it)+minimize calcification?

What has given me hope is that pre-op I found out that some people I knew had had heart surgery and they were living their lives no differently to me... Jobs, kids etc. it will take a time to get better and that journey might be longer than we envisaged.
Also, for me, the other option wasn't an option... This has given me a second chance. My faith is stronger as a result of all this.

Enrique K Dear Cathy, I had an aortic valve and root replacement. My valve was replaced with a tissue valve (porcine) and they implanted a graft in my root since I had an aneurysm. My operation was done through a minimal invasive surgery right side of my chest. No bones or ribs where cut so I can't describe the incision pain done through an sternotomy like other heart valve patients in this community. I got surgery Oct 9 and today I feel like a complete new person. It was the best I have felt in 3 years since I got diagnosed. I have an active lifestyle and love outdoor sports (expert skiing, swimming, mountain biking) so it was decided by me, my cardiologist and surgeon to get a tissue valve. Mechanical valves scared me since they are not made of natural tissue, your blood is more likely to clot on the surface of the valve. In order for this not to happen you need to be on blood thinners for the rest of your life and have dietary restrictions. Not only that if you do contact sports you can bleed to death if you get badly
hurt. All of this factors made me go with a tissue valve, The only
medication prescribed by my
Cardiologist was 81Mg Aspirin for the rest of my life. You are very active and love martial arts and motorbikes I would suggest you discuss this with your cardiologist and surgeon on which valve would fit your lifestyle. We are in this community to encourage and provide positive outcomes pre and post surgery. Everyone, in this community has had successful surgeries and can voice their own opinions. Once you get fixed you will feel so much better after a few weeks! Good luck with you decisions.

Meredith Bray Oh BOY will you be able to live! Within a year of surgery, I was back to traveling & swimming (2 months), riding roller coasters (3 months), road-tripping, mountain climbing, and horseback riding (4 months) and all-day kayak fishing (5 months). Life won't be exactly the same, how could it be? You'll define a new normal for yourself, one with fewer limitations than before - less naps (well, not right away, naps are great the first 4 months or so), more appreciation for life around you, more motivation to get things done, a new outlook on life. Seriously! :)

Frances Halley I opted for a tissue (pig) valve too. The surgeon said it would have been his recommendation as well if I hadn't asked for one. I have been a nurse for over 30 years and have seen the difficulties and dangers of being on long term blood thinners. That knowledge definitely factored into my decision on getting a pig valve. If you're young and active I suppose give a tissue valve some careful consideration.

Clare Auten Hi Cathy. I was 44 when I got my mechanical valve. My kids were 4, 7 and 13. I only had about 2 weeks notice that I had a heart problem and needed surgery. Recovery was smooth for me. Having young kids forced me to get up and do things. We go to the pool often. I chase kids both at home and at work as a special education teacher. Surgeon says no restrictions so I even mow the yard because my husband hates yard work. Life is good. I am ticking along....Jan 9th will be my 2 year anniversary. :)

Cathy - I feel very fortunate that I had a repair. I have no idea where I'ld lie on the tissue/mechanical valve decision.
AF... the explanation I've been given for post surgical AF is that my atrium was enlarged due to MV regurgitation and also I had a tiny hole between the atria (discovered in surgery). They also atriclipped the atrium appendage (where most clots form during AF) so all of this results in lower blood volume in the left atrium and it's taking time to adjust post surgery as it heals. 30% of MV repair patients get it in some degree, 90% revert without surgical intervention. I had low BP so it probably would have shifted quicker if blockers were higher originally. I was in AF for two weeks which saw me in A&E due to high erratic pulse, it's fine for a week and then I overdo it and it returns for a day or so and then settles. Oddly, the last bout went after rehab session, which I expected to have an opposite effect. It's exhausting so I feel I'm a couple of weeks behind in recovery. I had random ectopic beats before surgery but no AF so maze/ablation was not part of the plan.
My cardiologist is a leading arrhythmia specialist in the UK and he's indicated that it will settle down. I'm hanging onto his knowledge and the stats. I'm hoping the stronger and fitter I get the better.
Magnesium seems to play a key role so this is part of my diet plan, I was low post surgery and I returned to sinus for a day with magnesium IV. Talking of life post OHS... I think this is where my life will change positively is I'm becoming very much more conscious of what I'm eating. Bit extreme to have OHS to make me realise though!!!

Michael Lupo Hello Cathy, I had to make that same decision as you about 10 years ago. I opted for a tissue valve due to an active lifestyle (in addition to the ascending aortic graft). I may be faced with having that valve replaced again as it's showing signs of thickening or something growing on the valve making it "appear" thicker. I'm still not sure I'd want to go with a fully mechanical valve in the case they say I need one...as a life on Coumadin for an active person can be a burden. If you're active and can endure a second surgery in 10-20 years I'd go for the tissue valve now. I've had no lifestyle changes other than a better diet and exercise with an aspirin/day.
Aside from the anxiety of a future second surgery is there any other reason you'd opt for a fully mechanical valve?
Based on your post it seems that you really only want to do this one time. You can live life on Coumadin if you can accept the bleeding risks. In addition to that it's a difficult drug to manage if you're not diligent in diet. Ask yourself this, are you willing to live on Coumadin for the next 40 years of your life as a trade off for not facing this surgery again? I'm assuming you'd live to be a ripe old age of 80 and no better drugs come along.
:)
Playing the devil's advocate, I'm scared that I am at an elevated risk of stroke as the thickening of my valve may be a clot forming on it. They are talking about starting me on Coumadin depending on the result of a TEE. So I'll likely be on Coumadin in addition to having a tissue valve.
Reading back over my own post makes me anxious! It's not my intention to make you feel more anxious. I hope you will get the idea that neither are perfect and come with trade-offs, but perhaps my experience will help you make the right decision for yourself.
if you need to talk in person, I'm willing to talk if you want to ask questions in real-time.

Michael Shaughnessy Cathy,
I have commented many times on this subject of valve choice. I am very active and had my surgery at age 44. Now 48, my tissue (Medtronic Freestyle AV) valve works perfectly and I do everything and more than I ever did; Triathlons, water and snow skiing, woodworking with sharp tools, etc. You can not do motor cross or martial arts on blood thinners. My life would have changed dramatically if I had opted mechanical with blood thinners. Overall, I can stay very healthy and active keeping me ready for the next surgery. Although it may not be possible, I will avoid anticoagulants as long as possible. There is no perfect choice, but as a physician and patient, keep me away from Coumadin or any other anticoagulants if possible. I would happy to talk to you personally about my experiences and activities post surgery.

Best wishes, Cathy. Valve choice is a very personal decision. There are pros and cons to both. I had AVR and received a bioprosthetic valve (cow....moo). I am 40 and have two young children (6 & 9). My surgeon implanted a slightly larger valve with the plan of giving me a transcatheter replacement when I need it next. He said the transcatheter aortic valve will slide inside my current valve and it will buy me another 20 years before I need surgery if all goes as planned. My dad died from side effects of blood thinners about 7 years after his valve replacement (2009). He had some heart damage and was in afib that they could not keep him out of so he was vulnerable compared to a younger, healthy person. He had an older generation mechanical valve and the blood thinner levels have decreased significantly from what I understand. I was worried about pharmacogenetics and family history would make me more vulnerable. In addition, they are growing tissue valves from DNA and I *hope* this will be an option the next time I need surgery. Honestly, surgery was painful, but it wasn't as bad as what I had imagined in my head. Also, my surgeon said that second surgery is no more risky than the first surgery. The main pro of a mechanical valve is that you will not need this surgery again. All surgeons I spoke with recommended a mechanical valve at first. When I talked about bioprosthetic, they were open to discussing and agreed with my reasoning. I still haven't eaten beef yet. I'm a little weirded out that I have a cow valve! Best wishes on your decision. I hope you make a voice that you are comfortable with.

Of course I had a fix not replacement but I didn't know how it would go before. I would have chosen a biological valve myself only because I didn't want blood thinners forever. But you have to decide what is right for you... Listen to your inner voice. Go with your gut. Breathe... Stay positive.

Sorry)-let me know how did you go and how did you feel? I will ask mine about donating my own blood, I never knew anything about it until now, thanks 😊 My Pre-Admission Testing Day is next Monday 11th Jan. Valve choice is a personal & medical one. I'm going with Pig's Valve because:
1. I live a very active lifestyle, my job is running after kids all day long.
2. Being so busy I might forget to take it just like yesterday morning I forgot to take my Antibiotic tablet...
3. Could have kids.
4. I get sick abit so I might not have an appetite for couple of days so might interfere with Warfarin levels.
5. Increase risk per yr of haemorrhage.
6. My Surgeon said a Pig's Valve will fit nicely as I'm an young female+most replicates human valves (+she only uses that or mechanical).
7. Hoping on improved options in years to come.
8. Most (not all but most) of my diet is made up fresh vegetables, fruit, salads, fruit/veg juice.
9. High dose of Warfarin needed due to Mitral Valve position.
10. Slowly wears out, giving time to plan future re-op.
Here is my 10 lists. There are advantages of mechanics valves, both advantage & disadvantages of both. It's entirely upto you Cathy. That's how I came to deciding which valve I would go with that's best for me, I'm sure you have your own reasons for which way you choose. I hope you can find peace in your decision, you seem assertive which is great. Wishing you all the best, sending my prayers & hugs from my heart to yours ♥ Em xx.

W. Carter I will put it like this... After valve and aneurysm surgery your life will never be the same. It all depends on the extent of damage done to your heart pre-operation. I am 1 year post-op and I feel great, not as good as before heart disease came into my life. I also have congestive heart failure so that probably plays a role in how I feel these days. I will tell you this, on the "other side" (after surgery) it will humble you and make you glad to be alive. If you are a believer it will make your faith in God even stronger. Good luck, everything will be good.

pino correale Hi Cathy, i think your fears, your thoughts are more than justified under the circumstances. Let's say it once and for all, if i may.........OHS is not necessarily a walk in the park !!!! Having gone through it now (6th week post-op) i would strongly suggest and recommend that more attention should be paid to the emotional&mental state of each individual before and after surgery. I hope this helps and try to look at the bright side. LOVE will always win over pain and fear.
I'm 9 and half months post-op, and I have a mechanical valve. Can you have a normal life after surgery? That depends on your definition of a normal life. There are some things I cannot do, drinking alcohol is one of them, eating green vegetables is another. For me, rather than seeing them as a "change" in my lifestyle I see all these things as "modifications" for my new lifestyle.
I wouldn't say my life is back to normal. I regained my life.
If you want to have your life back (with some minor changes as I have) then I suggest you see your surgery not as something that you have to do, but as something that will give you the opportunity to enjoy your children, enjoy your spouse, enjoy your life because you will have a life.
My cardiologist has advice me against practicing any contact sport, due to the fact that since I am on blood thinners I may have a risk of bleeding out should I suffer a scratch or things like that, because as you may already know, blood thinners may put us at risk of bleeding out. But I promise you this: as time goes by, and you become accustomed to your new lifestyle, things get easier. At first is difficult, but name one thing that isn't difficult at the beginning.
If you want to drop me line my email address is arongard@gmail.com
I wish you the best, and only the best!

Patricia Garcia Hi Cathy, my surgery will be a year on January 12, 2016 and I have a mechanical mitral valve (St. Jude) and I am on coumadin. I am doing great and have no problem with the medication. I have 2 part-time jobs, taking college classes and have 3 small children. I have had 2 previous heart surgeries too. My first was a repair that failed 5 years later and then a porcine valve that was suppose to last 16 and failed in 8 years. I did not want to be on coumadin with my second surgery, so that is why I had the porcine valve. I though 16 years was a long way off, but I never imagined 8 years. This time around I never gave it a second thought and it is a small price to pay to be alive. Any valve can fail, but tissue valves do wear out and especially with younger active people. If you think that you could handle going through another surgery down the road then a tissue valve may work for you. Mechanical valve's are highly durable and I must say that I feel much stronger with this valve then my porcine one. I go twice a month for my blood work and it has been stable. I have not had any bleeding issues either and still eat greens, just in moderation. My only problem is that I have been in aflutter/afib for 4 months now., so I would have needed the blood thinner anyway. My heart has been aggravated from all the surgeries and does not want to convert back to normal. I am really not bothered by it since I am rate controlled and on blood thinner. Do what is right for you and much success on your surgery.

So far so good, went to ER one time due to high blood pressure but cardio said it was probably due to too much sodium intake. Cathy Slipski Thank you ! I am just an emotional mess have been crying since I woke this morning. I have never been so scared in my life. I have so much to live for. I wish I can get off this roller coaster I hate it. I can't wait till this surgery is behind me and I can say I survived. Until then I have nothing but fear and anxiety. I put on a happy face for everyone so no one worries about me but inside I am a mess. I keep thinking this could be my last thanksgiving my last Xmas I wonder if God forbid anything happened to me how would my kids go on without me. I have clusters of thoughts that haunt me everyday and the only people that could possibly understand this is all of you. Thank you for letting me vent and talk honestly . I will get through this there is no other choice. My family needs me.

Ruth Valenzuela Cathy, it is so normal to feel scared and emotional for what you are facing. I had the same fears. It was the hardest time for me. I just want to say once I was being prepped for surgery, this beautiful peace came upon me. It's only normal to think the chance of dying is there but my surgeon told me I had a 98% chance I would be fine. I don't remember even being taken to the OR. I did walk into the prep room and they allowed my daughter to see me before they took me to the OR and after she left the room, I remember nothing else. It felt like 5 minutes later I was being woke up and someone telling me "it was over." I was so amazed and happy and yes, the first few days were a blur but nothing was as bad as my mind had conjured up. YOU WILL BE FINE. GOD IS WITH YOU AND I WILL PRAY FOR YOU. I am not as young as you, so you probably have a 99% chance.

Liz Burroughs Hi Cathy, I really understand how you feel!! I was really scared to have my MV repair surgery. I wanted to put it off until early next year because I thought that I might not make it through the surgery and I didn't want to miss my son's college graduation in December. My surgeon told me that I should get the surgery done sooner rather than later. I went through with the surgery even though I was scared and afraid of what might happen to me. My surgery (four weeks ago) was successful & yours will be too. Everything will be okay. My thoughts & prayers will be with you. Take care. Liz

Emily Rowley I too thought the same as you Cathy. I'm scared to death about surgery especially when my Cardiologist+Surgeon told me the possible risks for OHS. I try to think positive, that I'm young+healthy+excellent Surgeon+faith in God who got me through my last OHS. Which i survived and did great! :D Everything this time feels scarier probably because I was kid back then. I'm still on that emotionally rollercoaster with just over one month to go.
They wanted me to get it done end of November but said I could have it in early January after they get back from Holidays which I choose. I wanted to get pass my 21st Birthday and this Christmas and other events to enjoy plus worried about taking time off work. Your health is more important. At work at times I stare off into the distance thinking of this and worrying.
I know my message of anxiety might not help, but what might help you is knowing we are all here for you and prayer for a journey to wellness.

Cathy Slipski Thank Em and yes it does help! It feels better to know I am not alone. I am here for you as well. I trust in god and pray that I will be ok but my mind goes crazy. Today I am better than yesterday. In plain English this sucks. Thses feelings that we both have suck. I keep saying why me? What have I done to deserve this? We have to be ok there is no other choice and I will pray for us everyday and if you need anything you know how to get in touch with me.

Emily Rowley Aww thank you so much, your support means alot to me. All the people here are so helpful, understanding and caring. My first OHS was difficult because I didn't have the support of friends (but my family were a great support like always) and lost alot who didn't understand what I was going through. At that point with everything going on, particularly the hardship I faced, I too questioned "Why me, what did I do wrong to have this happen to me?".
I will prayer for us too, which hopefully equal double the wellness :)
The response I receive from people in my daily life (outside of here) who find out about this say "Don't worry, you'll be fine", which I know they are probably true on the fact that we will make it to the other side but that won't stop me (and I'm sure with yourself and others) from worrying cause I'm not always fine.
If you would like to talk or have any questions feel free to ask me :) I'm here for you and all the other people in this fabulous community.

Emily Rowley Yes, I believe I've come closer to making the decision that's right for me. Here are my reasons for heading towards a tissue valve:
•Life-long anticoagulants needs constant measuring to get the amount exactly right to prevent clots (which complications can increase as years go by).
•Warfarin causes your bones to become brittle leading to Osteoarthritis.
•Tissue can allow me the possibility of having my own children and carrying them myself (using my own body). Less complications through pregnancy+labour.
•When they need replacing they slowly degrade unlike what happens when mechanical one shuts off/fails?
•In so many years medical technology will continue to improve (so will methods such as minimal invasive). Hopefully there might be something better.
•My Surgeon feels more comfortable with it.
I thought in years to come if I get a tissue valve, when it needs replacing I will ask for a mechanical valve because I'm worried about the risks of re-operations and it's mentally and physically tough going through this.
Although I hear stories occasionally of tissue valves to being rejected by the body & failing not long after. Mine would be a pigs valve which doesn't last as long as cows but replicates the human valve well (and minus risk of contracting mad cow disease lol).
My Surgeon wants to first try fixing it but if she doesn't believe it will give me long lasting result then replace. I wonder how they work it out. I would spend over 20 mins thinking (actually more like 1 min then faint lol). Hope this helps Cathy.
What direction are you thinking of for yourself?
Em xx

Cathy Slipski Hey Emily hope you had a great thabksgiving! As far as my decision on a valve my surgeon wants to put in a mechanical valve. I am terrified of taking blood thinners for the rest of my life but I also don't want to go though this again so I am at a standstill. I was told the pig vakve only lasts between 7 to 10 years I am 37 now so i would have to do this again in my 40s. I just don't know what to do. I really wish they can just repair but my valve is really bad. Where did you get your research?

Emily Rowley Thank you, although I'm in Australia :)
Have you talked to your Surgeon about your fears? Hopefully you have a skilled and considerate Surgeon that considers how you feel and your thoughts. In the end it's your decision! At first I was sold on having a mechanical valve, but after research and my Surgeon's input I'm heading towards tissue valve. My Surgeon was pushing for a pig's valve (she uses pigs) but said it's entirely upto me. I can see her reasoning behind her all for tissue-so I can be given the chance to have kids. She said I would need another operation done the track and would be more than happy to place in what ever valve I want. For under 60 yrs old she normally recommends mechanical valves.
When having my first OHS, I remember lady across from me that was around late 20's/early 30's who had mechanical valve after her tissue valve didn't last long, but I think her body rejected two (bovine-cow). She didn't have the experience Surgeon I had. I'm wondering how long pig's valves last in the mitral valve position for women in their 20's, love to hear from any! I was told pig valve usually aren't as durable as cow or even new horse ones, but pig's replicate the natural human tissue valve to a tee.
Same as me, terrified of surgery but terrified of blood thinners. That's why I was hoping minimal invasive techniques done well would take off more in this country!
I read on the internet you can't eat lots of food with Vitamin K, but my GP said that's untrue they just adjust the dosage levels to suit, it gets use to your diet that's why it needs monitoring closely in the first early stages. What about taking blood thinners most scares you? My Surgeon told me a mechanical valve in the mitral valve position would require larger dose of Warfarin due to connecting straight to the brain.
My Surgeon and Cardiologist told me that either way if repaired ir replaced, because so young I would need another operation down the track. How do they know your valve is too badly damaged for a repair?
Although there is indicators of how long each valve lasts, they might not last that long in the human heart especially with alot of stress.
I did my research by talking to my Specialists, including: My Surgeon, my Cardiologist, my Gynaecologist (as strange as that sounds), my local GP (Doctor) and talking with other Heart Patients.

Cathy Slipski My surgeon is very, experienced and also recommend a mechanical valve over a pig valve because if my age and the pig doesn't last long. Since I am all done having kids he highly recommend a mechanical. I am nervous about coumadin because of the commitment to take it and watching what I eat but he said he can adjust that. I ride dirt bikes and very active he said the mechanical will be fine. I just don't like the commitment to be on medicine for the rest if my life. I talked with him about my fears of dying and he keeps saying I will be fine. I trust in him and pray that I am. I was pregnant when I found out about this and they took my baby 6 weeks early due to my pulmonary pressures were high. I have had alot of echos and my valve is flat and I have a mild stenosis. My cardiologist does not think the valve can be repaired. My surgeon says he will know once he goes on but recommends to just replace it and be done. He said if he could fox 100% he would do that. I just can't wait till this surgery is over and on my way to recovery with family. Thank you for all your help you Ave done alot of research and I have learned alot from you.

I'm glad to hear you have a very experienced Surgeon.
How long did he say it would last both tissue and mechanical?
I'm at a different stage, I haven't had any kids yet :( makes a difficult decision. I saw a gynaecologist to check how fertile I am+eggs but he thought it's all in my head type of thing. Like I'm concerned/worrying for nothing. He was going to write my Cardiologist+Surgeon a letter-don't know what saying or if he actually did.
Anticoagulants adapt to your own diet, that should be fine 😊 I wonder how periods go on them. They were going to give me a trial but it's too soon til my Operation.
I too have the same fears, I know it must be really difficult for you especially with the arrival of your latest beautiful buddle of joy. God knows you are needed and wanted on this Earth. I will be praying for you every step of the way. I recently bought my friend a prayer statue by Willow Tree and there were cute 'Worry Dolls' you tell your worries to, they listen, you place them under your pillow and in the morning you feel better.
Oh no, sorry to hear that. I was told cardiac output increases during pregnancy then heightens during labour. Did you need to have a Caesarean and Heart Specialist team there?
What does it mean when the valve is flat? Stenosis is when the valve is closed too tightly? I have the MV Regurgitation problem, cleft in my leaflet, stitching came apart and worn out of shape where ring is.
Might be best to go in replace it and hopefully no more surgeries needed. It's hard for them to tell until they open us up-scary thought. I worry about scar tissue inside.
You're welcome. If there is anything else I can do to help you, just let me know. This time I've done alot more research and know more of what to expect being my second time around.

Hello everyone, new to this so please bare with me. So I was 23 weeks pregnant and was having such bad heart palpitations and shortness of breath. Was sent to the ER was scheduled an out patient echo and went home. The next week I never knew that my life would change the way it did. They found that I have rheumatic heart disease and need a complete replacement but I am pregnant and obviously they cannot do that while I am. So the weeks upcoming my symptoms have gotten worse. I had an app with my cardiologist when I was 34 weeks pregnant. Earlier that day I had an echo and met with the dr later that day to discuss the results. My pulmonary pressure was high and sent to the hospital and little did I know I would give birth 6 weeks early to a baby boy. He spent a week in the NICU and is now home with us. So now the next step into my heart disease is surgery. I have scheduled surgery Jan 25th and I am scared out of myour mind. I am a 37 year old with 3 beautiful kids and an incredible man that all need me very much. My surgeon said I need a complete replacement so my question is what kind of valve should a 37 year old get? I am leaning toward a mechanical valve but the thought of coumadin scared me. This whole surgery scares me I have too much to live for I don't want to die. That is my biggest fear. Did any of you have these thoughts? How do I get passed these thoughts? From what I hear my surgeon is great and top notch. Everyone keeps saying you will be fine but I get so upset because it's not them that this is happening too! So many emotions. Happy I found this site and hoping to hear from others with the same situation. Thanks!

Daniel Spurgeon I was 34 and quite shocked when I found out I had an aortic root aneurysm that would eventually kill me if I didn't have open heart surgery to get it repaired. I was in disbelief, then partial denial, I even woke up one morning thinking "I'm glad that aneurysm was just a dream and I don't actually have to deal with that." Then I woke up more a few minutes later and realized it wasn't a dream. What made me feel at least 50% better was scheduling the surgery to get it fixed. Modern medical care is so good, at least here, that I didn't worry too much about dying on the table.
There is a patient/doctor on this forum who posted a good description of valve choices a few days ago. If you search for Michael Shaugnessey it should come up. Before my surgery I chose a tissue valve in case they weren't able to spare the aortic valve when they replaced the aorta. I didn't want to give up mountain biking and military service. Fortunately my surgeon was able to save my natural valve.

Tammy Pilcher Hi Cathy, welcome to the community. I know how scary this all is and remember feeling the same way a little over a year ago. I know God led me to this site and here I found my wonderful surgeon, hospital and a heart family to which I'm forever grateful. Meredith Bray Oh gosh, your fears sound vaguely familiar. NOT - THEY ARE THE SAME ONES I HAD! You're normal! I'm thankful your son is healthy & home. You're definitely in the right place for reassurance and comfort, and information. it's a scary prospect, heart surgery. And it ain't easy. But there are worse things. Everyone faces the situation from a different viewpoint, and you're right - YOU are the one going through this, not everyone else that's telling you it's going to be ok. if you really want to know if you're going to be ok, you can research statistics (but keep in mind a majority of the valve replacement patients are elderly) and when you look at the morbidity rates, consider that many patients also had underlying conditions. My advice to you is to focus on what recovery will be like, and prepare for it, so you can enjoy the holidays with your family. As a matter of fact, go ahead and plan something GREAT for about 3 months after your planned surgery date, so you have something to look forward to. Mine was a family reunion in the mountains - it was a celebration for me, and a reason to recuperate on schedule.
Clare can tell you about recovering with children in the house. I'll jokes and keep you laughing, and tell you how to avoid back pain (which was really the worst part of recovery for me. Well, that and the fact that my monthly cycle decided to start the day of surgery. Whatever - i had other things to worry about!)
Don't be a stranger!

Emily Rowley My Cardiologist said "I'm going to send you to another top Surgeon at one of the best Hospitals, this is who I would send my daughter to if she needed the same treatment. She is a caring female with daughters of her own so she will understand and help you through this". I found faith in those words that I'm in good hands.
When I met her she stated the facts-if I don't get it done now, it will get worse, my heart will enlarge and cause risks for surgery. My heart before my previous OHS was enlarged alot+I had few other defects yet I survived! :D
The next thing I did was think, okay the odds are in my favour because I'm young and keep really healthy (ie. Don't drink or smoke and I eat really healthy, plus get plenty of exercise each day).
The next part that helps me is getting so caught up on focusing on my recovery by planning what cool shirts I can wear and getting prepared. Imaging yummy food I get to eat afterwards-food is something on my mind alot.
Now I keep busy with work and try to take the time to relax and rest with ease (still not easy to do, something that's easier said than done).
I prayed before my last surgery to God, and will continue that.
I too get angry and upset with those people who tell me "It will be fine, don't worry" I tell them "I'm not currently fine, it's easy for you to say don't worry when it's not like you ever went through what I'm going through" one replied with "I'm a positive person and trying to think positive". I kinda felt like saying what you think I'm a negative person and that I haven't tried to think positive having this major surgery. I have been guilty of pushing some away who didn't understand.
Hope my experience can help you Cathy. I know my messages are super long!
We are happy to hear from you and hear your posts :)
Besides, I figure any extra arm I grow will come in handy.
