One year ago today my heart journey began with a surprise diagnosis of severe mitral valve regurgitation/flail and ruptured chords. Off I went on a path I never saw coming. There were days that were very low and days where God lifted me higher than I could have imagined. I reconnected with myself, my faith, loved ones, old friends and added new friends….including the lovely, supportive souls on this site! I also learned so much…patience, humbleness, to be kind to myself and accepting help is ok!! Six months into recovery I am thankful and I am back to doing all the activities I enjoyed pre-surgery. If I can share any advice for those just starting on their heart journey….find your people, do your homework, trust your decisions, keep your mind and body healthy and strong, and know that you can do it! God Bless!!
Rose Madura Congratulations Kristine! Great advice. So happy for you.

Robert Miller You look great and everything you say is so true. When you go through this, even when the procedure and recovery is easy, you will get a new perspective of life. While the surgeon hopefully has fixed your heart for good, you realize how (other) things can suddenly change. I haven't completely changed but it definitely has changed my lifestyle, especially with the people that are closest to me. So in some weird way this journey has improved life not just in a physical way but what you make out of your life.

Leona Resch Well said Robert and Kristine! This whole experience has definitely made me look at things in a different way. Not sweat the small stuff and focus on the meaningful people and things in my life. That realization of what you have gone through is almost like a reset in some areas of life- I’ve thought about it as the silver lining of heart surgery- kind of weird but I appreciate and enjoy the blessings in my life even more! ❤️

Thomas Brusstar I had that same diagnosis in spring of 2018. The initial diagnosis triggered all kinds of fear, but within a few months my surgery was over and I was empowered by how the body heals. A year after the diagnosis I was kayaking in the Galápagos Islands with my family. Heart surgery is obviously a major health event, and not everybody gets a complication-free recovery (I had surgery on a Tuesday and was home for dinner Friday), but heart valve problems are so fixable these days! There are mysterious illnesses like some cancers that sneak around in ways we cannot easily measure, and then recur — so in the grand scheme, I appreciate the amazing ability to measure, understand, and fix these problems. Thanks for your great update!
11 weeks ago today I came home from the hospital. So happy to get back in the water this afternoon. Kayaking was a success!

5 weeks post op from my right side thoracotomy mitral valve repair. Started driving last week (I use hand controls) and riding my hand cycle slowly around the neighborhood. Pleural effusion is getting better. Still a bit more sore than I was expecting, but I have pretty much been transferring myself since day 3. My journey is my own….I have learned it’s not about comparing yourself to the recovery of others. I’m excited to celebrate my Birthday later this week with a strong heart!

This is me and my rockstar surgeon, Lucian Lozonschi….24 hours post surgery. Surgery was a bit more extensive than first recognized, but after 8 hours, still a right side thoracotomy repair. Due to my paralysis and not being able to move around like most patients I am still dealing with uncomfortable chest tubes, but I was able to stand with help yesterday and have been transferring without a lift. Just need to drive through some pain, get fluids drained out and get rid of chest tubes. Longer than I wanted to be in hospital. But they tell me I am doing well.Every day is a new day and yes, indeed Susan Lynn, those were the most glorious ice chips ever!! More to come, thanks to you all and thanks be to God!!
