Hi Susan :-) I know you're on here because of your son. Thank you so much for posting comments. Can't talk much because it causes significant chest pain. (I have to use speech to text the type as I have sustained significant nerve damage from my first open heart surgery, a minimally invasive mitral valve repair). Anyway, I'm being told the exact same thing that your son was told.... that I need a mechanical valve because a tissue valve would only lasts 6 to 7 years, and multiple replacement operations would be increasingly more and more dangerous. I really don't want to be on Coumadin. There are many reasons for this, one of which is that I already have micro hemorrhages in my brain and a blood thinner would not be a good idea. Also, I want to be able to travel without worrying, and I want to keep doing Taekwondo. I was told sparring would be completely off limits. Is there anything else you can share with me about what you learned about high volume valve hospitals? That really operations are not as bad as what I've been told? I put in for e referrals to the heart Hospital of Plano, but I'm running out of time. I'm so severely symptomatic that I can barely do anything. They said they can get me in February but I have to travel 4 hours just for consult appointment. I'll do it if what you're saying is it possibility! Thank you in advance for anything you can share with me!

susan harris my sons valve issue is aortic. admittedly, i’m not educated on mitral. but, i’d suggest contacting dr adams at mt sinai hospital. he is in dr finder on this site. can you send your recent test results? if not, they may be able to get them from your cardiologist. i know dr adams fellow surgeon does video consults. no travel. so i assume dr adams will. it’s education, perspective. you don’t need to commit to surgery in nyc. he may say something like “get a tissue valve locally, then come see me and we’ll chart path for next replacement”. he can tell you risks of multiple surgeries at a high volume center like mt sinai. his colleague told my son he’d prefer to open him up 4-5 times to replace tissue valves — with no increased risk. but with all that said, i don’t know your current health state. don’t get more and more consults if you can’t risk the time. you can do something now and then see surgeons in a year or so to plan more care. we had a surgeon say he’d replace a mechanical valve when my son gets to 60 as it’s hard to grow elderly w mech valve, but another one who said no way she’d do that. the team at mt sinai routinely “fixes” or re-does what other surgeons do. a tissue valve now gives you flexibility in future? also, what about Baylor Scott & white in texas as option? i’d ask any of them to do virtual consults. this is mostly measurements and data on your echos, scans, etc. not about in person exam. let me know questions.
susan harris my error. i just realized plano is baylor scott & white. one in the same!

Welcome (back) fellow Susan and fellow Pennsylvanian! My brother lives very close to you, in Yardley, and had a daughter born with a very rare heart condition. She had surgery at just two weeks old. Since then, they have attended many cardiology appointments just waiting for the news that she would need another procedure. Luckily, my niece and her initial repair have gone way beyond the doctors' original estimate and is now age 30 and she still hasn't needed a subsequent surgery. My point is, the decision about a procedure that will have lifetime consequences probably shouldn't solely be made by anyone in their 20s and never out of frustration. My brother and sister-in-law would never expect my niece to navigate something like that on her own.
There have been many advancements in cardiology just in the last decade, I can only imagine the options that will be available for your son during his lifetime. I'm sure you know that as someone who has followed the research for two decades.
Beware of surgeons who only want you to buy what they happen to be selling. Unfortunately, medical ethics and patient wellbeing have been superceded by revenue generation. The best thing you and your son can do is get multiple opinions. You'll both know when you've found the surgeon who looks at him as an active 26 year-old with lots of life ahead rather than a number on a balance sheet.
Take your time. Confidence in your choice is everything on game day! Best of luck to you, both!

Rita Savelis I've had 2 mechanical valves for 9 years and I don't hear any clicking from them unless it's very very quiet. Coumadin takes some getting used to and one needs regular blood tests. Taking any new drug makes one anxious at first but then you get used to it. I haven't changed my diet. I eat everything, I do the activities I want to do. The onyx valve requires a smaller dose of coumadin than other mechanical vaves. It's not fun to take meds for anyone so I empathise with your son. I was 53 when I had heart valve surgery, but I was a cancer patient at age 15. Your son is probably very mature because of what he's been through so he can explore whether the ross procedure or a mechanical valve will work for him. There is no right choice. There is only the choice he makes and it will be right for him. Take care.

What an incredible story Susan! I’m sure Adam will be thrilled that you’re here! I know what you mean about the importance of this community, especially when you feel a bit bounced around in the doctors’ offices! I discovered the Ross here and am having my surgery in a month or so, but was originally only given the two options of mechanical or tissue. Your son is so blessed to have a mom fighting for him! I wish you both all the best as you take these next steps. God bless! 🙏🏻❤️🩹

John Olson Hi Susan! I had a Ross Procedure 3/27/2024 at Mt Sinai performed by Dr El-Hamamsy and his team. My surgery went exceptionally well. I highly recommend talking to them, I had no difficulty getting a consult. If you have any more questions I am happy to answer them. I know the period before surgery is not so easy. I wish you and your son the very best. John
susan harris Thank you so much! John, wish you the best recovery! Grace, thank you!
