Glad to hear you're doing better, Susan. Seems bumps in the road aren't that uncommon on our recoveries. I'm two weeks post op today, feeling ok and having some ectopic beats occasionally. Had several bouts of tachycardia. I think the important thing for all of us is to listen to our bodies and get to the doctor when necessary. Best to you, and here's to no more bumps. (from Lenore)

Nancy D I am almost 3 months out from MV replacement. My stamina isn't where I want it to be yet, but I know it will come eventually. My strength is increasing as rehab increases. It is taking longer than I anticipated, but it is what it is....can't rush these things.... Take good care!

Eleanor R Hi, Susan. I am almost at 4 months and back to "normal", or better than I was before surgery, but the first couple of months I noticed getting tired just being out of the house, not really doing anything. And I continue to want to go to bed earlier, which for me is a good thing overall as I was a retiree night owl, and now by 10 I want to be in bed, reading but prone. I hope your energy level picks up steadily going forward.
Susan Ericsson Thanks, Elanore and Nancy. I know I need to be more patient. Thames for the hope!

Adam Pick Hi Susan, I saw your post about fatigue after heart surgery. Fyi, I can completely relate. I couldn't sleep. When I could sleep, it wasn't restful sleep. I was a zombie during the early recovery. So you know, we're not alone. Here's a story I posted with Dr. Salenger about fatigue after surgery that has 25+ patient comments. Maybe this will help?

Nancy D when I was fresh post op, I had little appetite, but could always get down cold fruit- grapes, plums, apples and it tasted good and felt good going down. And I felt like I was eating something nutritionally good for me, and of course the fruit did help with the effects of the pain meds which in my case (and lots of others) is constipation. Fruit is easy, and tastes good! Just my take on getting good stuff in. Hope each day is better than the day before!
Susan Ericsson Thanks, Adam. Always good to know others are experiencing the same thing.

Hi Sue, I hope you're doing well today as you continue in your recovery, and that some of your "bumps in the road" have smoothed out! Question for you: You said you've been using a wedge pillow to sleep in bed. How many inches thick is your wedge? Is is the 12" or one of the bigger ones? Trying to figure out which one to purchase. Thanks! And may God continue to bless you in your recovery. Joan

Susan Ericsson Joan, I threw out the package and the only tag is the one that says the FBI will take me if I rip it off. I don't think it can be more than 12", if that. I usually add my own pillow or pillows to it. I'll grab a measuring tape tomorrow.
Joan Napier LOL. Thanks Sue. I kinda thought that would be the best size for purposes here.

The surgeoh thru them out of surgery and did that repair, but could not do the heart surgery. I gained 40 pounds ion water, and had to wait to get better before I had the repair. What a mess! Could not walk or do anything, but thank GOd no pain. Was supposed to be min. invasive, but they could not bacuse of the DR. screw up. So 23 days later did the surgery. All this time in the hospital. No pain after, no drugs. Don't rememeber much, but THank GOd, no pain. One year laster I ride my bikle 15-20 miles a day. So hand in there, things will be fine!
Susan Ericsson What an epic journey! So glad you are doing so well. Thanks for the inspiration!

Susan, yes, we are all different in dealing with our thresholds to pain, recovery, reactions to medications, and emotional outcomes. I was "Blessed" to undergo mitral-valve replacement, tri-cuspid valve repair, and the insertion of a pacemaker at the Straub Hospital in Honolulu (March 4). I was fortunate to be released from the hospital within nine days. I was walking on Waikiki Beach that same week. I returned to work on Guam (CDR William C. McCool EMS, US Naval Base) as a speech-language pathologist, the second week in April. I retired in June. Recently, I drove across the United States from Denver to Charleston, SC. If anything, I've learned to take each day one day at a time. Wishing you a speedy recovery. God Bless... Jim Renes

Glad you are getting through!! I tried posting quite a few times but either I was not doing it correctly it their were a few bugs in the system. I want you to kniw I prayed for you and will continue to. I am 8 weeks post op and just have started back to work. I go to cardiac rehab in two weeks starting with twice a week than three times a week then five days a week. I will feel glad to get that started as I know it will bill a lot more confidence in my body awareness. Concerning the surgery, supposedly all is going well, however I do have considerable pain with the ribs and throughout my right breast. I am assured that it's part of the healing process. I do think I pulled some muscles of couple weeks ago overdoing it. So Susan, make sure you let those good-looking boys and handsome husband really assist you at the house. Additionally, if your parish is a big part of your support system I sure hope you let them help you. My husband was remarkable --my kids have been helpful But I think you need every set of hands that you can. This is not a time to be proud so just enjoy the casseroles and your appetite --trust me --will come back. If the chefs are good you will tend to gain weight! I think I am the first part valve repair person that is actually gained some weight!!! I will be glad to start rehab. May you be blessed throughout your recovery. Erin. Hey Susan, I feel the pain and heard that this post op time is hard for the type of surgery you had. Take your pain meds whether tylenol or advil based as they help you to sleep and function. Narcotics have weird side effects I heard and i didn't like them either.
Hope to see you at home soon eating good food and sufficient water. Please look after yourself first, with necessity, the men folk will find a way to get it done.
Peace be with you. Bob O.

Susan. Tomorrow is the big day and soon this will all be a memory of knowing you are on the other side and your and your beautiful heart are mending! I am happy to see that you have two good-looking and able bodied young sons who are going to be instrumental to the healing process along with their Dad! I am sorry I didn't post faster than this today and hope you get to read that we are sending prayers and universal love to you as you begin this next part of your journey. As Eleanor writes we will look forward to hearing about your successful surgery and when you are heading for home to recovery! By the way, the "curly" fluffy member of your family will be a great bonus to your recovery as our pets have a way of just looking at us and making it feel better! Be well and may your Surgeon and his team do a beautiful job of mending that heart of yours. Terrie

Hello Susan, I had a Mitral Valve Repair on August 25 in Chicago. The first couple of days are not a lot of fun, but as each tube comes out you'll feel better and better. The vent tube removal was really not as bad as I expected, I coughed when they said cough and it was removed easily. I was more tired than I expected when I got home but each day was an improvement. I am now walking 30 minutes a day in addition to almost normal activity around the house. Scheduled to start Cardiac Rehab next week. My first week home my Golden Doodle plopped himself down right beside my chair and followed me around whenever I got up for anything. Sending prayers your way for strength to get you through. You'll do just fine!!

Donna Broquet I will start out on recumbent bike and treadmill walking and work up to stepper and weights and resistance bands as sternal precautions are less. All while having heart rate and B/P monitored, which will make me feel more confident to work a little harder than I might on my own! Looking forward to it. It's getting a little too cool out for my walks outside!

Donna Broquet That's a shame. Talk to your PT friend and cardiologist then about target heart rate and monitor on your own. I found a Heart Rate Watch at Walgreens on sale for less than $30.00. It gives me my heart rate, distance walked, steps walked and calories burned. It's called "Smart Health Walking fit". It was near where the BP monitors are near the pharmacy. Don't rush it though, little by little, that saying "slow and steady wins the race" comes to mind!! Take care!
