Mark Buttell Not only are you a hero for serving in the military (Thank you!) you will also become a Warrior for joining the heart club.I’m 55 facing the 5th (not pleading the 5th-lol!) open heart shortly. You will be in great hands and the outcome will give you all you need to enjoy your retirement dreams afterwards. My choice for both of my valves are tissue as well. This is all personal decision and the right decision however you choose. God be with you and you will be fine.

Marie Myers Not sure what your age is Shane, but research the possibility of an Aortic valve repair when you are getting your various opinions. Repairs are not done everywhere, but check into it . In the right surgical hands, repair is a viable option for the right patient.

Pamela Gregory Hi Shane. I also had a bicuspid aortic valve. My age is 55 so it was a similar decision as you have on the type of valve replacement. I went with a biological valve and pray it will last long enough to get TAVR next time. It is definitely shocking when they inform you that you will need open heart surgery. I didn't know how I would get through it but I did. Your support system is mentally the most important thing and picking a great surgical team is the most important physical part. If a repair is possible you won't have to worry about the type of valve so definitely research that possibility. There is a lot of information provided on this website to find the best surgeon

Amy Berger Hi I’m 66 and have a bicuspid valve and having Avr surgery on January 24. Surgeon explained they have improved the structure of the valve opening to be a bit bigger and are making them to accommodate a valve in the valve in the future. Some days I’m totally anxious and other days looking forward to looking back. This site has been a blessing with great people cheering us on!.

Robert Stebbins Hi Shane - I’m 53 and did the same as Pamela for my bicuspid valve replacement. There are pros and cons for tissue valves vs mechanical valves but either one is better than a failing bicuspid valve. I had my surgery on December 13 and am in recovery mode now. Happy to help with any questions you might have.
