Robert Miller Can you fill me in regarding the "halter monitor" and the "chip"? I just got off some monitor I had to wear for 2 weeks. It recorded my heartbeat looking for afib which I used to have (pretty significantly) and I know I still have but to a much lesser degree. The monitor didn't show anything except for a couple of episodes of fast heartbeat. The image shows what I was wearing. Pain in the butt as it constantly came off so I had to tape it back on with medical tape. It made the skin itchy. I also had to wear it across my chest because they didn't want to put it on top of my incision.

Richard Munson I will repeat it for you. Called my care link by metronics. Its a tiny chip similar to a chip they implant on a dog that goes under the skin and it detects any a fib incidents. My cardiologist did it and the metronics local tech person observed. My insurance paid for it. Unless i told you it was there, you cannot see it. Tiny. It sends data to a bedside monitor which in turn sends data to my doctor. He checks it regularly. There is also a small hand clicker to use if you feel you need to alert them of an incident. Battery lasts 3 years, no shower issues, no rash, no falling off plus no 2 week window. I am sure you can google it on line. It sends the data at night so if something occurred during the day ( at work), it stores in the chip and relays it while you are in bed. I will post a picture of the bedside unit. Stay tuned.

Hi Rhodie, Welcome to the world of “impending” heart surgery. I read your comment on the eccentric jet, which is what I had also. It just means that as the left ventricle contracts, the jet of blood that is ejected is not flowing in a smooth, concentric way due to our abnormal valve. My regurgitant bicuspid valve is what caused my eccentric jet, and that combined with the greater chance of aneurysm formation with a bicuspid valve, led me to surgery 5 years ago. My aneurysm was the driving factor in my surgery. I had an aortic root and ascending aneurysm. Have you already met with a cardiac surgeon? Lots of info to take in, as you are probably in the watch and wait phase. How often are you having echocardiograms? If you have any specific questions, ask away and some of the many people who have been down this road can answer some of your questions.
Richard Munson Marie, eccentric jet, i always learn something new from you. Here i was thinking 747.

Rhodie Jacobson Thanks for your note! I am seeing a cardiologist-no surgeon-every six months with a new echocardiogram. It IS a lot of info to sift through. My blood pressure is newly high and I am taking medicine to make it go down...is that a sign of things or just age? Thanks again!
Marie Myers Could be age, and meeting new doctors who say you might need heart surgery!
Welcome Rhodie to our website. Hope the heart warriors on this site can be of comfort and support for you. If you have questions ask away. God bless you

Rhodie Jacobson Thank you! This is a great site. I am looking into the different hospitals in the Minneapolis area. I do not know how far off my surgery is and I am being seen by North Memorial. I just don't know what I should be looking for in a hospital or if I just have too much time to think. Any opinions on hospitals in the Minneapolis area (specific to Bicuspid Aortic valves and aortic aneurysms)?

Rose Madura Hi Rhodie. I think they like to wait for the aneurysm to get 5 cm before they do surgery but your aorta may make them want to do it sooner. What does your cardiologist say? You may want to look into the Mayo Clinic. Also, I'm an advocate for getting a 2nd opinion. Please keep us updated and let us know if you have any questions. Godspeed!

I learned from Rose to get a second and maybe a third opinion. In my latest case with dissection I didn’t have much of a choice. Three cardiologist and a thoracic surgeon explained the dangers of dissection and I also made my research.
Richard Munson I need to read up on dissection so i can educate myself
