Dear Lisa , It is still very early days post op . My throat / speech was affected post op . I had woken up as the nurse was removing the tube and she had asked me to stay still for a few more moments , until she removed it completely . It seemed to take a long time until my throat and speech eventually went back to normal . Recovery has ups and downs and you are doing really well ! Pace yourself . Little steps . One day at a time .

Lisa Silverman I’m sorry you had to go through that, Ruth. I had 2 hours of semi conscious intubation before they removed the tube and it was very difficult so maybe that’s part of it. I’ve been intubated before but never had an issue like that before.

Doug Fults Hi Lisa, I did not have Afib myself, but recall reading that it quite is common following surgery - looking around here, I found a page here in which Adam discusses the topic with the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Northwestern: https://www.heart-valve-surgery.com/learning/amiodarone-atrial-fibrillation-afib/. I am heartened to see in there his statement that "AFib typically goes away a few weeks after surgery. “The good news is that AFib usually goes away in the first few weeks,” states Dr. Johnston. “AFib peaks at about 10 days… Then, AFib declines pretty steeply out to about six to eight weeks.” and "According to Dr. Johnston, AFib is typically a “temporary annoyance” after heart surgery and is not a “long-term problem." And welcome to recovery!

Lisa, I wish the best on your surgery. I had the same surgery in 2014 and have a terrific outcome. The minimally invasive technique was terrific. I suspect you are up and walking through the unit and will be out of the hospital in a few days. I hope transition is excellent and be sure and get into rehab when your physician suggests it is possible. Found it was a great help.

Hello Lisa. By the time you read this you will be past your surgery and on the road to recovery. I also had mitral valve repair via robotic assisted surgery, at Cedars Sinai Hospital, this past March. My experience is that the procedure via robotic assistance is the best way to go. Recovery is remarkably quick, all considered. For me, after just one month I was walking more than a mile and after only two months I was able to continue my lifestyle of mountain hiking, up to 7 miles, with no issue whatsoever. A couple of months later again and I was back at offshore fishing for big, strong tuna. Also, no issues at all. It was as if I never had cardiac surgery or a mitral valve problem. Skiing is next on the list, as soon as the resorts receive snow and are up and running. I hope this is inspiring for you and I am wishing you the same quality level of recovery and getting back to a normal life. You made the right decision. Best to you.

Lisa you’ll be fine! I had open heart surgery for mitral valve severe regurgitation October 25th. My primary & other doctors told me there was nothing wrong w me & were totally surprised when further testing revealed the seriousness of my mitral valve. I was asymptomatic. I’m 72, had a successful repair & am doing fine. You will too! Best of everything to you, Lisa! You go girl!

Lisa, I am wishing you good luck! I had robotic assisted MV repair exactly 9 weeks ago. Also discovered from a murmur.
I am 69, and had amazing care at Cedars Sinai, with Drs Emersosn and Trento doing the repair.
I played my first pickleball game last week (8 weeks post op), began a little driving at week 5, and am finally ready to go swimming! I feel great, currently in Cardio Rehab- so this is to let you know, you will do great. Be patient, do what PT and home health tell you to do. I am so grateful to all who had a hand in my recovery. Wishing you the same.

I am also having valve repair or replacement my tricuspid valve, not sure yet if he’s going to repair or replace yet but I’ll know the 12th after my results from my tee and heart catheter. When did you have surgery? Or have you not had it yet?

Hi Lisa, just read your message about possibly having your surgery done by Dr Gillinov at CC. He’s an amazing surgeon and everyone at CC is the best. Dr Gillinov spent a great deal of time going over the surgery step by step and answering all of my questions. After testing he discovered my tricuspid valve needed to be repaired along with my mitral valve. I had my surgery on April 10th and my incision is barely noticeable. I researched numerous Drs.and hospitals including U of M and Mount Sinai and decided CC and Dr. Gillinov were the best. After initial testing , I saw Dr. Collier my cardiologist at CC, also fabulous. I suggest seeing him if possible. CC is a 3hr drive from our home in Michigan but having Dr. Gillinov perform my surgery and Dr. Collier as my cardiologist is well worth it. If you have any questions call me at 313-410-4048 or email at cjmdgmom@comcast.net Wishing you the best😊
Lisa Silverman Wow thank you so much Christine I’ll definitely be in touch and look forward to connecting🙏🏼
