Lauren, hopefully your surgery went well, and whether a MV repair (which I had last November) or a replacement, you'll starting recovering very soon, and be back on your feet quickly. You will get better and back to normal in due course. My only advice, hard for me, was to be patient and relax. I was in a hurry to get active, meet and surpass the exercise milestones, and prove I was getting better. But, my body pulled me aside a few times and told me to slow down, relax and enjoy the recovery. Slan leat (good health to you - the Irish language phrase for goodbye). Pat - Cork, Ireland

Go for second opinion and go WITH UTSW? I’m curious if you saw Baylor docs first as my cardiologist affiliated with them didn’t even call me to tell me my echo
Results either. If it’s the same group
I’m leaving them

Holly Wale I, too, started with Baylor. I wanted to hear about the minimally invasive approach due to the reduced infection risk and shorter recovery time. My search lead me to UT Southwestern and Dr. Doolabh. I am a Mom and work full-time so a shorter time away from my family and my work really drove my investigation. For me - also - the consultation with Dr. Doolabh and Steva really solidified it was the path for me. I immediately felt I'd found the right place for what I needed and am confident I am in good hands. Good luck to you Jacqueline!

Lauren R Hi both - I did start with Baylor and decided to switch to UTSW solely because of Dr Doolabh. I came home today (Saturday, surgery was Thursday). Pros of Baylor Plano: dedicated to heart only, you have one nice private room that changes from ICU to general around you. Those same pros are what I saw as cons of UTSW: big hospital with lots going on. I did have a great experience at UTSW. Just plan to have some normal delays like my CT scans on pre op day started 90 mins late, the ICU nurses seemed like they had a lot of patients to look after (not the 1:1 monitoring I expected). I don’t think you can make a wrong decision, but I had a great surgery with Doolabh, loved his whole dedicated team, and felt very well cared for at UTSW. At Baylor, I also had the same delays, long times for appointments, and never a single call back from the original cardiologist I met with.
I hope you feel better! Take your time recovering. Do not push it and you will do great.

Thanks for sharing your story which is almost exactly my own. Had my TEE over a week ago, which was very abnormal, was told probably not repair candidate. I am still waiting to hear from cardiac surgeon for an appt. I'm calling today. You really have to be your own advocate these days....
Take care,
Denise

Lauren! You are in great hands with Dr Doolhab and UT Southwestern. The whole process for me was seamless. His team made me feel that these procedures while serious are quite routine and it sure turned out that way. Some anxiety is normal but you will see once the surgery is behind you your recovery will be quick and it will be behind you in no time. The nurses and staff are all top notch. If that chest tube hurts don't be brave and ask for pain medication on time. For me the pain went away 2-3 hours after the chest tube came out the next evening after surgery. I did not need pain medication after that. I am on day 19 post top and back at work part time and walking daily. You got this. Will be thinking positive thoughts for you on the 30 th. God Bless!! You will be fine.

Lauren,
I am lined up behind you (the week after) for Dr. Doolabh for what I hope to be a repair vs. a replacement aortic valve on 10/6. Like you, I was just having a normal life and did not know anything was even wrong until it was obvious. It is a pretty odd thing to experience. Just wanted to connect with a fellow Texas Mom with a similar health issue.
Good luck to you!
