Hi, Glad to know youโre mitral valve was repaired though severe already. Mine was replaced by mechanical, both aortic and mitral valve due to stenosis and regurgitation. My open heart surgery to replace the valve happened last March 10, 2022. In my post op I experienced irregular heart rate thatโs why I need to take beta blocker, it came to normal sinus rythm after a month. My lifetime medication for my mechanical valves was a blood thinner warfarin where I am limit to eat green veggies due to vitamin K limit per day. Sad, but still grateful for my 2nd chance in life. I am only 45 yrs old. I hope and pray that my anxiety having a mechanical valve will fade away as time goes by..I hope to use into it. God Bless and I hope youโre doing well. Happy to find this community๐

Ginny Turner Thank you so much, Joan. It sounds as if you are doing well as your surgery approaches. I spent the better part of last year learning what I needed to know and making decisions. This community was invaluable in easing my fears and boosting my confidence in the outcome. If you haven't come across George Gardopee's journal, perhaps you would find it helpful. George is from PA and had his surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in November of last year. He wrote a detailed recap of his mitral repair experience in his 11.24.21 post - I'll link it below. I'll be thinking of you in the days to come, knowing you'll have a mended heart soon and be on your way to a healthy and happy 2022.

Annabelle Picz Hi Ginny, Iโm sorry your surgery got rescheduled.. I saw another surgeon on Monday and pretty much said the same thing.. I have a severe regurgitation and needs repair. My left Atrium is starting to be dilated, so the surgeon doesnโt want me to wait any longer fear of damaging my heart farther. Right now heโs very optimistic of being able to do a perfect repair. I scheduled my surgery for Feb 11th. Itโs with Dr Kevin Accola in Orlando. I will be having my procedure at Adventhealth. His assistant is suppose to call me back so we can arrange my heart cath. Iโm starting to worry I wonโt have enough time to do all the pre-op requirements. After the heart cath, what else is needed? Iโm blessed bc my sister will be coming to take care of me for 10 days post-op. She has been an ICU nurse at an open heart unit for 17 years. Iโm very confident with my surgeon and at peace with my decision. I guess the wait is the only thing thatโs making me anxious.. I pray your surgeon will get better soon so you can have your surgery. Iโll stay in touch..

Ginny Turner Hi Lauren, and thank you for the note. We are both so fortunate to have Dr. Gillinov as our surgeon - I've heard nothing but the best. I am also hoping for a repair of both my mitral and tricuspid valves. From my images, he thinks he will be able to repair them. No real symptoms for me either, although the mitral regurgitation is severe. Best of luck to you, too. I look forward to meeting you in January as we walk the halls!

Hi Ginny, read your story and I too had both of the same valves repaired via a full sternotomy. I don't know how much you care about the scar, but wanted to share that when I had mine done, the skin incision was only 3.5-4 inches long. --- so a pretty small scar that can barely, if at all, be seen when wearing V-necks. -- I am 7.5 months out.
The FULL sternum bone was still cut, but somehow the surgeons stretch the chest skin at the incision, so they don't have to cut the skin further. -- in other words that still have the important full view of your heart. Dr. G at CC is awesome, so maybe he already does this. But thought I would share. Godspeed.
PS Pain is astonishedly not really bad; tylenol worked wonders. The exhaustion was a different story. I wish I had been informed how exhausted I would be, because it caught me by surprise and I was not mentally prepared for it. So this is the reason I am sharing.

Ginny Turner Hi Deena, thanks so much for your note. It's great hearing from patients who've had the same surgery and are doing well several months out. I hadn't considered that the skin incision might not be as long as the full sternum cut. I don't know exactly what to expect as far as scarring is concerned, but the most important thing to me is for the surgeon to have the access needed for the best outcome. So good to hear your sternum pain was manageable. I also appreciate the tip on the post-surgery exhaustion you experienced, so I can expect that to be the case. You were certainly in good hands with Dr. Adams, just as I know I am with Dr. Gillinov. Both amazing surgeons. I've been somewhat worried about flying back to Texas after surgery, but others have said it was easy and they didn't encounter problems. Hope you continue to do well going forward. Thank you for the tips and encouragement!

Rita Savelis Sorry no one ever told you that you'd be tired after OHS Deena. I never had pain just lots of discomfort and exhaustion. The surgeons had mentioned the exhaustion and said it would last a long time, that it was very individual. I have never felt that kind of exhaustion before. My only advice to Gina is to rest and to not try to compete with anyone else in your recovery. It is all singular and individual. Give your body time to heal. Your heart will have been through a lot, and you can't see any of it the way you might see a broken leg. Take care.

Hi Ginny,
Our stories are very similar. I too am an active 72 year old lady who lives in the Sacramento, CA area, married for 50 years, and have had mild mitral valve prolapse since my twenties. After an Echo and TEE two years ago, I discovered that I have moderate mitral valve regurgitation, moderate left atrium dilation. Interestingly, the mitral valve prolapse is still mild.
General cardiologist recommends yearly Echos and office visits every 6 months to "watch and wait". She did mention I may be a candidate for mitral valve clip. When I see her in February, I have many more questions for her. The more I learn, the more questions I have. What bothers me the most is knowing that it is extremely important to go to a designated heart center and surgeons who do hundreds if not thousands of mitral valve procedures. If my cardiologist is not forthcoming in answering my questions, this will be a problem to solve. I'm not the kind of person who will blindly go anywhere without obtaining transparency regarding a surgeon's experience. I don't often log on and read community comments, but so far haven't seen much info on the Mitra Clip.
Glad to hear that you have found an experienced team for your surgery. This is the kind of info that is really helpful.
Best to you,
Rainell M

Ginny Turner Hi Rainell, thank you for the message. Our mitral valve stories do seem similar. A consult with a Dallas surgeon left me with some concerns and unanswered questions. At that point, I decided to send my records and test results to Dr. Gillinov for a second opinion. I also spoke to Adam Pick to seek his counsel. He reinforced the value of getting more than one opinion. He also stressed the importance selecting a surgeon and team who are very experienced in my particular type of valve surgery. The two surgery consults I had and their recommended surgery plans varied significantly. I remember Adamโs phrase, โExperience is everything.โ I feel confident that Iโve made the best choice in Dr. Gillinov and am so grateful for Adamโs advice.
I hope you remain in the mild regurgitation category and perhaps can avoid surgery. Iโm so glad you have the valuable resources this group provides so you are as knowledgeable as possible going forward. Wishing you the very best!

Thomas Brusstar My left atrium was extremely enlarged when my mitral valve went into its โflailโ mode. Like 4 times normal. After the open-heart repair 3 years ago, it came down immediately, but is still something like twice normal. The left atrial dilation, the pulmonary hypertension resulting from the mitral regurgitation, and then the right ventricle enlargement because of all that, and eventually the left ventricle enlargement, makes me think earlier is better. The pulmonary hypertension is hard to diagnose, but itโs definitely happening once you have mitral regurgitation and LA dilation. There just is no valve to protect the lungs from that โbackwash.โ

Ginny Turner Rainell, I second what Thomas said above. Even though I feel well, there's a lot going on inside that is not manifesting in outward symptoms. My echo results changed significantly from 2019 to 2021. Just as Thomas had, I also have a severely dilated left atrium from the backward flow of blood. There is an excellent video with Adam Pick interviewing Dr. David Adams and Dr. Rick Nishimura about advances in mitral valve surgery, recorded in 2015. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it - you can find it in the Videos section here. One thing I have learned on this journey is the value of credible information. That's what makes this site so great! Wishing you well,

Rainell Metzger Hello again Ginny,
Thanks for the post. As a beginner to heart issues, this may sound naive, but shouldn't cardiologists know the right time to intervene to prevent all of these extra problems. Also, left atrium dilation can cause AFib as well. This makes me nervous and question as to why we are going to them at all?

Ginny Turner Hi Rainell, there is evidence to suggest that earlier intervention for degenerative mitral valve disease can prevent more severe problems later. But a decision to have surgery must take into account many factors relative to your specific case that your cardiologist must consider. Ginny-- You sound like you will do great and are in really great hands! I just went through a (total) surprise mitral valve repair surgery here at DeBakey in Houston with Dr. Lawrie four weeks ago. Surgery and recovery so far has been amazingly smooth and good. Like you, I had some advance warning, so had some time to research, and I asked Cleveland Clinic for a second opinion also, though they convinced me I was in the best hands here. The best advice is what you're doing--research and prepare and think positive. Don't forget non-underwire, front closing post-op bras, though if you have minimally invasive surgery, that may not be such a need.

A couple things I wish I would have prepared ahead of time; leg strength and many small pillows to tuck around. You will need you legs and not your upper body for getting up and down.
