divya gangadharan Hi Daisy, Deena, I am doing well. My voice has almost returned to normal for all practical purposes. At the Laryngologist visit couple of weeks ago, my vocal cords were moving significantly though there is some sluggishness. The ENT has said that I don't need any intervention at this point since my previously paralyzed vocal cord is almost normal now. I have started cardiac rehab and tolerating exercise very well. My heart rate still continues to be in the 100s though. How is your heart rate, Daisy?

Daisy Tanner Good to hear you’re going in the right direction. 🙏🏼 My heart rate is around 70. When I had an ablation a couple of years ago for Afib, my heart rate was high in the 90-100’s for a couple of weeks. Normal but disturbing. I was expecting it to be high again with this surgery but it stayed down. Everyone’s different. Yours should eventually regulate. 🙏🏼 I gave you more update info on the other thread. Take care and big hug 💞🌸

divya gangadharan Hi Daisy and Deena -Recovery is going very well. My stamina is pretty good. Still limiting exercise to walking since surgeon wanted me to do only walking for 6 weeks, but I certainly feel capable of starting some more vigorous exercise, but will hold off for another week :) Voice is still the same. Finished 4-weeks of speech therapy that was setup at hospital discharge. Seeing a laryngologist today. Fingers crossed!

divya gangadharan Thanks Daisy, Valerie, Deena. Appreciate your thoughts and prayers . Laryngologist visit yesterday made me hopeful. They think my swallowing issue is resolved and that my throat is able to not have a gap while swallowing. So that's a big relief about not having to worry about pneumonia. The doctor "suspects" that there is now a hint of movement of my paralyzed left vocal cord though he is not certain. He wants me to wait a few more weeks ,since in their opinion, this is still early days for nerve injury recovery ( though it feels like forever for me). So, I am scheduled for a filler injection in 4 weeks if things don't improve.
I am a little more positive now after the visit, but I also don't want to be disappointed again if things don't improve (given my luck). So, trying to strike that balance on how I see things.

divya gangadharan Deena, Yes, I am scheduled for cardiac rehab from June 10th. Regarding the nerve injury, the doctor din't have any special insight on the extent of the injury. He said that knowing the extent of injury or recovery doesn't change my treatment options clinically except for if the nerve is totally dead after 1 year. I got the distinct feeling that they really think it is still very early days for recovery for an injury like this ...so, I just need LOTs more patience. Need to do some meditation to practice patience

Hi Divya, I understand your voice issue . I had a subclavian aortic bypass that left me speechless for months ! They warned me that it was a possible outcome. I had no voice and would choke when I drank . It took a good 6 months to get back to normal. It was not a quick or overnight process. I started taking magnesium citrate as it said it was good for nerve damage. I know the frustration you are experiencing. I hope you heal quickly and fully!

divya gangadharan Thank you for your post , Jennifer. Yes, it has not been pleasant not having a voice and coughing when drinking water. I miss getting my kids attention with my voice even across the length of our car. So, I am grateful that you understand the frustration when I miss that . Will keep my patience. Thank you for your wishes

Hi divya: I´m sorry about what you say of the laringeal nerve injury. It is a bad luck, but anyway, I think it has solution, I read that there are treatments based on hyaluronic acid injections (laryngoplasty) that restores the tissue damaged. Hi Divya, I had mitral and tricuspid valves repaired in Dec 2023 at Keck USC where I stayed hospitalized for 7 days. During that time, I lost my voice and developed dysphagia. I could not whisper loud enough, and communicated with nurses by typing on my phone. I was not able to swallow anything without choking and coughing, eventually having had a feeding tube down my nose and throat. I was only intubated during surgery for about 6 hours. But I noticed the swallowing problem right before surgery which could have been due to TEE done a few days before. I was seen by an otolaryngologist while hospitalized and treated. I honestly cannot describe what the treatment was in my health state at the time. It involved puncturing a side of my throat and inserting a needle of some sort. My voice came back slowly after that. I could not swallow thin liquid for a few weeks after discharge. I took gound up meds mixed with apple sauce. I learned to swallow on one side of my throat that was not affected. This problem also went away eventually after a few weeks.
My HR was also high, around 100, initially with BP around 95-100. I was on a beta blocker. I recorded my BP and HR everyday. HR went down to the mid-70s after about 8 months. It helped that I went to cardiac rehab and still continue with the exercise and walking. So it could take time. Hang in there. Recovery could be a long journey.

Hi,
I had aortic valve replacement in July. TVAR so I was not out as long as you but I had one good sore throat from that tube. I couldn't swallow or talk. Pudding felt good and that was all I could tolerate after surgery. It takes awhile to return to normal but I would try not to holler at your kids. I think it was 4-5 days before I started to sound like a human but again I was not out as long as you.

Hi Div:
I had Mitral and Tricuspid repair four years ago.
Prior to OHS I already had a little dysphagia which did worsen post-op. I still cannot swallow tablets so I crush or use liquid. Pretty much the same routine as prior to surgery. I have had a few speech evaluations which show ‘delayed swallow’.
Regarding my voice. Prior to OHS I was a normal speaker. Post-op my voice was scratchy. Everyone said it was from the intubation. The first phase lasted about four months but never returned to normal. Two years later my voice became much worse.
I was seen by a sub-specialist in Otolaryngology who diagnosed a ‘Permanent Paralyzed Left Vocal Cord’ due to ‘laryngeal nerve damage’ during OHS surgery.
The specialist said the reason it happened in two phases is because the damaged cord was hanging on and finally just gave out.
This is most likely not what happened to you but I would see a SUB-specialist who can scope your throat. It’s a two minute exam. Nothing to it.
Good Luck!

Fidel Martínez Ruiz As far as I know, Ross procedure is almost only applied on aortic valves. The best of course in mitral valve defects is to have a good repair of the natural own valve, which is not affordable at times. In my case it was not possible and I had a mitral valve replaced by a biological one (cow) in october 2023, and I feel fine, doing all sports activities like before surgery. The only drawback is its average lifespan, about 12 years in mine and more than 20 years in the new generation prostheses (at least, on according to manufacturers). When this prostheses wear out, you have two possibilities, open surgery or "valve in valve" replacement via catheter depending on the old you are or your general health status. It seems that there are many possibilities open. Go ahead cheer up!
