We had a very scary moment today on our daily walk. A guy coming up the sidewalk towards us with an enormous pit bull both growling at shadow and pulling him almost off his feet. He dropped the leash by accident and i yelled to nancy to grab the mace. Only luck that the leash got twisted around a park bench or i may not be writing this. For sure shadow would have been ground beef and maybe me protecting him. Never saw anything so scary. I have read about similar things but never thought about it in my sheltered little world. I have a license to carry but don’t. Maybe i should. Not sure if the first round would have been the dog or the moron walking him. I love all dogs but.

Kimberly Eisenhut I'm so sorry Richard, that's awful! My son's girlfriend was attacked by her own friends pit bull just sitting in her friends house. No warning, no provocation, nothing at all. He just, out of the blue, ran to her, clamped down on her arm and her friend ,(not her friend any longer ), had to yell and get the dog to let go. It was horrible and she's still traumatized and used to love dogs, but now can't even be around them at all. She was lucky to get away with some stitches and a few scars, but it's not something anyone should ever have to go through. The dog was trained, but from my experience, some breads should not be in homes or around people, as they're just too unpredictable and aggressive. As well as having owners that are very short on brain cells and do not teach them or recognize that they're dog, if trained to be a guard dog or be aggressive, should NOT be walked or around other people or animals. The dogs owner needs training as well!
Good thinking with the mace, I'll have to remember that. I keep some in my car, but never thought about on walks. You just never know. Glad your all ok🙏❤️

Ana, i wish you were there last night at dog training class. Shadow was in a class by himself,,, literally. No one else showed up. It was like a private lesson. We did his entire routine consisting of walking a course making turns, stops, figure eights etc. then we moved on to sit for a pat, stand while the trainer pats him down like a judge, then at the very end we did a recall. He sits while i walk 50 feet away, turn, then call him. He then streaks to me at 100 miles an hour, jambs to a halt and sits at my feet looking into my eyes for a count of 20 seconds. Then he gets a treat. He was A +++++.

Richard Munson I believe in positive repetition that we get from dog training. They can be sneaky little devils who always try to take command as soon as you let up. Its all about who is in charge. Me, not him. Most take the course and never return. I enjoy it, and shadow is amazing. I think he enjoys showing off his skills. Siberian huskies are not easy to train for a host of reasons. Very stubborn. Our formal training classes once a week are refresher courses and at 25 bucks a shot, worth it in my mind. 45 minutes, we go thru our entire routine with 5 other dogs of different breeds and dedicated owners. Its as much training for the handlers as the dogs. Even On our daily walks, we informally train. When we encounter another dog , we make shadow sit as they pass by. No interaction, no sniffing, no acting stupid. Hearing, wow, your dog is so well behaved is an ego builder, while their dogs are pulling and acting like morons.

As maybe a poor analogy about honing your skills while growing up i spent countless hours shooting baskets in the playground. My height would have no doubt assured me a spot on most teams back in the 60’s but i wanted more. I was out there in rain and snow. Obsessive maybe. But in the end, i probably had 50 scholarship offers after high school. I am a firm believer in hard work, which is not popular in todays culture sadly.
