I am very happy to announce that Dr. Vaughn Starnes, my surgeon, just became the sixth doctor to receive 100 patient reviews at HeartValveSurgery.com!
This is a wonderful milestone as Dr. Starnes and his team at Keck Medicine of USC in Los Angeles, California has successfully treated so many patients in our community with valvular diseases including aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation.
Dr. Starnes is the Department of Surgery, Surgeon-in-Chief at USC Norris Cancer and Keck Hospital of USC, and the H. Russell Smith Foundation Chair for Cardiovascular Thoracic Research at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Doctor Starnes is also founding executive director of USC’s Cardiac and Vascular Institute and chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Dr. Starnes & Me at USC
As you may know, Dr. Starnes performed aortic and pulmonary valve surgery on me in 2005. Since then, I have not required any additional cardiac intervention or surgical reoperation. I am so thankful Dr. Starnes was my surgeon.
Patients of All Ages Celebrate Dr. Starnes
Dr. Starnes is a very unique surgeon in that he performs both pediatric and adult cardiac surgery. For example, here is a testimonial from Joe Foster, the father of Grant Foster, who needed aortic valve surgery.

Joe shared with me, “Dr. Starnes ended up doing the Ross Procedure after discovering that his aortic valve was unrepairable. Grant did amazing!! He was able to come home just three nights after his surgery. No complications. His mom and I are very happy with the decision we made to go with the Ross Procedure. Doctor Starnes believes the operation will last him a very long time.”
Reed Erickson is another patient success story of Dr. Starnes. Reed underwent heart valve surgery in 2022.

In his testimonial for Dr. Starnes, Reed posted, “Dr. Vaughn Starnes and his entire team are top notch. I was up and feeling strong about 4 days after surgery. I’m recovering quickly (though taking it easy). Leading up: Bob Sachs his PA answered all of our questions as we nervously awaited surgery day. The entire 5W ICU team at USC Keck was top notch. I’ve been afraid of open-heart surgery for years… and Dr. Starnes and team made it comfortable and familiar. I can’t recommend enough.”
Many Thanks to Dr. Starnes & USC!
On behalf of the patients in our community, I would like to extend a big “Thank You” to Dr. Vaughn Starnes and the entire USC team for their dedication to helping patients with heart valve disease. In particular, we would also like to thank Dr. Craig Baker, Bob Sachs, PA, Elizabeth Agraz, Angie Salicrup, Julie Starnes and Celine Petrossian. We really appreciate all that you do to provide excellent surgical outcomes for the treatment of valvular and related cardiac diseases.
Keep on tickin’ Dr. Starnes!
