My husband had his aortic valve replacement on 8/31/22. Was released from hospital on 9/6/22. We just saw surgeon for follow up and my husband is doing amazing. We went tissue valve and he is 49 years old. That decision was right for us. My husband’s surgeon is Dr. Loumiotis, Cooperman St. Barnabas-Livingston NJ. Amazing surgeon (from consult to surgery to after surgery ~compassionate and professional) and his staff is wonderful. The nurses and supporting staff nothing but the best care from preop to postop.🙏🏻❤️

Rebecca Bigelow Mohammed,Both types of valves are safe. It really depends on the patient and lifestyle. Whatever choice you make it will be right for you. My husband did not want to take blood thinners so tissue valves is the choice for him. We are aware the valve will need to be replaced but at that time we hope he’s a candidate for TAVR. Jay nothing but good vibes tomorrow. It will be over before you know it.

My husband (49 yrs old) has bicuspid aortic valve. The stenosis is severe and he is scheduled for heart valve replacement surgery on 8/31/22. We have 2 children, 13 and 16 years old. We are scared and have not decided yet to go mechanical or tissue valve. Textbook states mechanical. The surgeon we chose recommended mechanical, however will do whichever valve type we decide. Both have their pros and cons. If anyone can share their experience and valve type you chose I would be grateful.

Andrew Dial I had the Ross procedure done, as I did not want blood thinners for the rest of my life. And tissue valves do not last that long. Ross procedure is great for people into their 50s. Hope this helps!

Rose Madura Hi Rebecca, welcome and I'm sure you all are scared. That's normal. I was 59 and chose a tissue valve because I didn't want to be on blood thinners. It wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion from another doctor. I recommend it. Remember these surgeries are don't daily with very positive outcomes. Please keep us posted. God bless you.

Susan Lynn Rebecca - It's a big decision and an individual choice especially for someone so young. If you didn't speak to a surgeon who considered the Ross procedure, you may want to do that this week. Multiple opinions are important - some surgeons may gravitate to procedures that are familiar to them. Or, there may be a legitimate reason your husband wasn't presented with that as an option. Make sure you're going to a surgeon with a high volume and success rate of the final procedure you choose. Good luck,!

Rita Savelis I've had 2 mechanical valves for 7 years (I had surgery at age 53 to replace my aortic and mitral valves). Your husband is young and so a tissue valve would require another surgery down the road as tissue valves do not last forever especially in a young patient. This is why a mechanical valve was recommended. What type of valve to choose is a very personal and difficult choice. You have to trust your surgeon. Whatever decision you make is the right one for you, and will work out. I wish you the best. And I'm sorry that you have to go through this.
Hope that he will not need another surgery
