Hello fellow Heart Warriors, I am one year post SAVR and aortic root enlargement due to a bicuspid aortic valve. Right after my surgery, my MR was mild. I just went for my one year echo and now my MR is moderate to severe. Ugh- I feel like this rollercoaster is not going to end and I am devastated. My surgeon thinks the aortic root enlargement could have caused the MR to worsen. I have a TEE scheduled on Wed to gain a better understanding of how and why this has happened.
Has anyone experienced this as a complication from their SAVR?

Nancy Bukowski I just saw that article on Dr. Gilbert Tang’s X feed.
The aortic valve connects your heart to your aorta. This valve can become stiff and not open correctly or become leaky. Lars Svensson, MD, PhD, Chairman of the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute gives an overview of treatment and management of these conditions.

Dan Fouratt Thank you for sharing, it simply confirms my decision to go SAVR as much as I was hoping for TAVR. This group was very solid in their advice to go SAVR several months ago when I asked.
Rose Madura I too am glad I went with SAVR first time around. I really didn't have a choice.
Daneen Douglas Interesting article, Nancy! Thank you for sharing this information!

Barbara deLoache I did not have the choice for TAVR either because I have a bivalve& they are harder to do & have a good result. So SAVR IT WILL be. At 78 that will be scary but It is the right thing . At least with the chest open, the surgeon can do whatever needs to be done in full view. As a surgical nurse, I like that.
